Q:

If I own the iPhone app of a game such as NOVA will I have to pay again if I want the iPad version?

- Alex

A:

You will be able to continue using your existing iPhone and iPod touch applications on the iPad without needing to get an iPad-specific version, as the iPad will be compatible with the majority of existing applications available on the App Store. Obviously, however, applications designed to run on a 320x480 iPhone screen may not look as great when run on the larger 1024x768 iPad screen, nor will they be able to take advantage of any other iPad hardware advantages.

As a result many developers will likely be releasing new versions of their applications and games that are designed specifically for the iPad. Developers can choose to either produce a separate version of an application that run only on the iPad, or produce a “Universal” version that supports all of Apple’s current touchscreen devices, taking maximum advantage of whatever hardware is available.

Whether or not you will need to pay for an iPad-optimized version of an existing app is going to depend entirely upon how the developer chooses to release their iPad version. If a developer chooses to release an iPad-only or Universal version as a completely new, separate application it will be a separate purchase as it would be with any new application. However, it is also possible that a developer could choose to release a Universal version as a version update to the existing app. This would be treated as any other application update, and under the current App Store policy would be a free update.

Q:

Do you know if any of the iPad accessories such as the photo adapter will work with the iPod touch?

- Micah

Q:

Will the iPad dock with keyboard work with the iPhone? If so I’ll get one right away.

- Steve

A:

Most of these accessories require support to be built into the device operating system itself, and at this time the iPhone OS version that is available for the iPhone and iPod touch do not support accessories such as the camera connector or keyboard.

It’s important to note that the iPad is expected to be running iPhone OS 3.2, a slightly newer version than is presently available for the iPhone and iPod touch. It’s therefore entirely possible that Apple could choose to provide support for these accessories in a future firmware release for the iPhone and iPod touch, but there are no guarantees that this will be the case.

Note that third-party software developers may also be able to support these accessories within their specific applications simply by accessing the Dock Connector or Bluetooth hardware directly, however it’s unclear whether Apple will release the necessary information required for developers to be able to easily support these accessories on the iPhone and iPod touch.

Q:

I have an Internet tethering option on my iPhone 3GS. Will I be able to tether it to my iPad over Bluetooth?

- Paul

A:

Nothing regarding tethering was announced for the iPad. Since the iPad does have Bluetooth, it is theoretically possible for it to use a tethered connection to an iPhone, however Apple has not given any indication as to whether this will be supported. Our current guess is that we probably won’t see this capability out of the box, although it may appear with a later firmware update.

It also seems likely that the jailbreaking community will rally around the iPad as well, which will undoubtedly lead to somebody building the necessary software to unofficially handle tethering support on a jailbroken iPad, in much the same way that the iPhone was able to provide tethering capabilities for jailbroken users long before iPhone OS 3.0 made it officially available.

Q:

I’m already getting AT&T wireless access (Starbucks, etc.) through my iPhone account. Can I also use the iPad there without having to pay the additional data fee to AT&T?

- Kevin

A:

Based on AT&T’s current policies it seems unlikely. AT&T’s current Free Wi-Fi service is only available to access Wi-Fi from the specific device that your data plan is for. This means that if you’re an iPhone user, you get free Wi-Fi only on your iPhone, if you’re a Blackberry user, only on your Blackberry, and so forth. LaptopConnect users get free Wi-Fi for laptop computers, but even this requires that you insert your LaptopConnect card or USB device into your computer for authentication purposes.

Although AT&T has announced plans to offer free Wi-Fi access to iPad 3G users, it seems likely that this will be handled in the same manner as it is for the iPhone—you will need to actually be subscribed to an AT&T iPad 3G data plan, in which case the iPad will automatically login to AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots where available.

Note that it is entirely possible that this policy may change and AT&T may actually offer free Wi-Fi access for iPhone and iPad users, but based on AT&T’s track record, we wouldn’t count on it.

Q:

Does the iPad eBook app allow for highlighting, marking, and/or adding notes and annotations to books? I haven’t seen anything on this. This would make a big difference for me.

- John

A:

It is unclear at this time if the iBooks application is going to support any kind of annotation features. Apple has not provided any kind of detail on the features that will be found in the iBooks application, however it’s worth noting that the ePUB format itself does not presently support annotations. This doesn’t, however, mean that Apple could not add their own proprietary method of handling annotations.

It’s also worth noting that it appears the iBooks app will be a separate download from the App Store. This makes it possible for Apple to easily add new features and capabilities to the app through a normal App Store update in the future, rather than requiring a complete iPad OS update.

Lastly, keep in mind that the iPad will support all existing iPhone OS applications, meaning apps such as Stanza, eReader and Amazon’s Kindle reader should run on the iPad out of the gate, and we may even see iPad-specific versions of these apps. Some of these applications do provide support for highlighting, marking, notes and annotations, so even if the iBooks app does not provide this capability right away, there are other options available.
