Ask iLounge offers readers the opportunity to get answers to their iPod-related questions from a member of the iLounge editorial team. We'll answer several questions here each week, and of course, you can always get help with more immediate concerns from the iLounge Discussion Forums. Submit your questions for consideration using our Ask iLounge Submit Form. We reserve the right to edit questions for grammar, spelling, and length.

The second most asked question at iLounge.com:

How do I put DVDs on my iPod?

For converting DVDs, web video, TV shows and home movies to your iPod, iPhone or Apple TV, we have a three-part series outlining the best formats, settings, and various tools to use for converting all types of video content for use on these devices.

Top five questions most recently asked by iLounge readers:

Q: What are the best speakers to use with my iPod? (15, 76-79, and 90-92)

Q: What are the best headphones to use with my iPod? (10, 72-75, and 90-92)

Q: I really want to get a nice case for my iPod. Do you have any suggestions? (36-37, 54-67, and 90-92)

Q: How can I connect my iPod to my car stereo? (14, 32-35, 68-71, and 90-92)

Q: Are there any batteries that I can use to extend my iPod's battery life? (82-83 and 90-92)

A: Answers to these and many other questions can be found in two places. Our Free iPod Book 3.3 provides a complete report card to all of the iPod accessories we've reviewed as of summer 2007, as well as over 125 iTunes and iPod tips & tricks. Further, our new 2008 iPod & iPhone Buyers' Guide has accessory tutorials at the page numbers listed in parentheses above. These and other publications in our Library are free downloads, developed by the editors of iLounge!

And now, for this week's Ask iLounge column:

Q: I just bought the 2nd gen 4GB Ipod mini. The sales person said it would not work without a USB 2 port. After looking on iLounge, I see that there is conflicting info regarding the use of USB 1 with iPods. Your answer in the 1/27/05 Ask IPodlounge article confirms that USB 1 will work with the mini. Is this still the case with the 2nd gen Minis ? If so, is there a chance that this will hurt my Mini or void the warranty?

- Neil Cikins

A: As you mention, we covered this in the Ask iLounge column on January 27, 2005. Nevertheless, since this question comes up often, we’ll answer it again.

Any iPod model that works with USB 2 can also work with USB 1. The differences between the two are the data transfer rate (it will take much longer to sync your music using USB 1, especially the first time if you have a large library, or any time you add a lot of music to your library), and that the iPod will not charge from a typical USB 1 port. A powered USB 2 port will charge the iPod. So if you buy a new iPod and only have a USB 1 port, make sure to buy a Power Adapter as well. Alternatively, if your computer allows you to add a PCI card, you can get a USB 2 card to add to it.

Q: There are at least 2 things wrong with my iPod. One is that the battery doesn’t seem to last for more than a few hours at a time - nothing like the amount it should. Also, it refuses to be recognized by any computer. Is it worth paying to have it serviced by Apple or is it worth buying a new iPod? The one I have now is not in warranty.

- Catherine

A: There could be a number of things wrong with your iPod, given the symptoms you describe. If the iPod is old, the battery will lose its ability to hold a charge. As for it not being recognized, this could be caused by an internal problem, a bad cable, or ever a problem with your computer or the interface you use to connect it (USB or FireWire).

The first thing to do is back up your music - make sure you have a copy of all your music on your computer. Then, manually reset the iPod. (See this article for instructions.)

If your iPod is still not recognized, connect it to your computer anyway, then run the iPod Software Updater - in some cases, the updater will recognize the iPod even if it is not actually mounted. If so, use the updater’s Restore function to erase and reset the iPod. (Remember that note about backing up your music files… This procedure erases everything on your iPod.)

If this solves your problem, then you’ve been saved. Also, in some cases, iPod users find they have better battery life after running a Restore procedure. If this doesn’t solve your problem, then it’s more serious. You should try and connect it to someone else’s computer first, to determine if the problem is caused by your computer or by the iPod or cable. If this doesn’t give you an answer, then it’s time to consider service, or a new iPod (depend on how old yours is, and how much the service will cost).

Q: My buddy and I both have sizable music collections and we want to buy a separate computer to set up as a digital media hub, primarily for music, but also, perhaps, for movies and photos. The plan is to get a cheap PC and a large removable hard drive and use iTunes to manage and play the music. I use a PowerBook G4 and I would also like to interface with the hard drive, loading music I get onto it and copying music from it. Will the hard drive work between a Mac and a PC?

- Matt

A: First, a Mac can mount and read a disk that’s formatted for Windows; the PC, however, won’t be able to read a Mac-formatted disk without third-party software such as Mac Drive (http://www.media4.com/).

However, a problem arises if you want to use a removable drive on the PC; it will be hard to get the appropriate enclosure for use with your PowerBook, since Macs need either USB or FireWire for external hard disks. What’s best is simply to connect the two computers via an Ethernet cable, set up networking on both computers, then mount the PC volume on the Mac and copy that way.

Q: How do I copy music from my computer to my iPod? I bought the iPod in Korea, where I am now, and cannot make sense of the instructions.

- Alastair

A: You can download a PDF file of the iPod User Guide in English from Apple’s support page. If you need a copy of the manual in another language, go to the appropriate Apple web site for your country, look for the Support section, then search for the manual. The URL is generally http://www.apple.[country code, such as .jp or .co.kr]/support/ipod/.

Q: I like my songs to have a very high bitrate on my computer, so when I burn a compilation of music I get the best possible sound quality. But when listening with the iPod earbuds, I do not need this quality, yet I do not want to convert my songs to a different bitrate. In Windows Media Player they allow you to sync a device and change the bitrate of a song as you transfer it from your computer to the audio player. Is there software out there that can match this for my iPod?

- Jacob

A: This feature is currently available only for the iPod shuffle, and not for other iPod models. For now, the only solution is to convert your music to a lower bit rate, saving the high bit rate copies of songs, then create playlists just for the iPod that you then sync either manually or automatically (by selecting just those playlists).

To Matt: I basically did the same thing you’re planning to do (buy a small computer as a music hub), so I have to ask - why not get a Mac Mini instead of a Windows box? Tiny, quiet - add an external drive (I got the Lacie 250GB firewire) and it’s a perfect music server.

FWIW, I’m a Windows guy otherwise - this is my first Mac (The Mini is networked to my 3 Windows machines). It’s just surprising to hear a Mac guy planning to buy a Windows box for something the Mac Mini is perfect for.

After I hooked up my iPod to this comp. it transferred a few songs and then said it no longer recognised it. Now I can’t get to music on my iPod. It says there are no songs but half the gigs are used. My songs only work if my iPod is hooked up to the comp. even though iTunes said it doesn’t recognise my iPod. I tried the Updater but it doesn’t work and I tried manually resetting it but that didn’t work either. What else can I do?

Can I use my iPod Mini 2nd Generation to record live music with an external microphone?  If so, what would the quality be like?  And, would I be able to load the recorded file onto my PC?

Regarding question 1 : your iPod mini (2G) will charge when hooked to a USB1 port. No problem with that at all. At least mine does when connected to my iBook G3/900’s USB1 port.

I’ve just finished converting all my songs in iTunes into MP3s so I can burn them to listen to in the car.  I set iTunes to import all songs as MP3s, but when I tried to rip one, after four hours it had only ripped three tracks (a total of twelve minutes of playing time).  Are MP3s supposed to take this long, or am I doing something wrong?

Yes my computer stopped recognizing my ipod earlier today, the ipod has no charge and will not charge. It cannot be seen by the ipod updater software and my computer thinks it’s a generic USB device with no driver. Weird. It was working fine and then…
Anybody else have this problem?
