Ask iLounge offers readers the opportunity to get answers to their iPod-related questions from a member of the iLounge editorial team. We'll answer several questions here each week, and of course, you can always get help with more immediate concerns from the iLounge Discussion Forums. Submit your questions for consideration using our Ask iLounge Submit Form. We reserve the right to edit questions for grammar, spelling, and length.

The second most asked question at iLounge.com:

How do I put DVDs on my iPod?

For converting DVDs, web video, TV shows and home movies to your iPod, iPhone or Apple TV, we have a three-part series outlining the best formats, settings, and various tools to use for converting all types of video content for use on these devices.

Top five questions most recently asked by iLounge readers:

Q: What are the best speakers to use with my iPod? (15, 76-79, and 90-92)

Q: What are the best headphones to use with my iPod? (10, 72-75, and 90-92)

Q: I really want to get a nice case for my iPod. Do you have any suggestions? (36-37, 54-67, and 90-92)

Q: How can I connect my iPod to my car stereo? (14, 32-35, 68-71, and 90-92)

Q: Are there any batteries that I can use to extend my iPod's battery life? (82-83 and 90-92)

A: Answers to these and many other questions can be found in two places. Our Free iPod Book 3.3 provides a complete report card to all of the iPod accessories we've reviewed as of summer 2007, as well as over 125 iTunes and iPod tips & tricks. Further, our new 2008 iPod & iPhone Buyers' Guide has accessory tutorials at the page numbers listed in parentheses above. These and other publications in our Library are free downloads, developed by the editors of iLounge!

And now, for this week's Ask iLounge column:

Q: I have an iPod mini and I have purchased some songs from the iTunes Music Store. When I update my iPod, these songs don’t transfer to the iPod; a screen pops up on the computer saying that I am not authorized for these songs. How can I transfer these songs to my iPod?

- Anna

A: It seems that you are not authorized to use the computer with the iTunes Music Store. Unfortunately, iTunes is not very helpful when you try to sync your music with your iPod - it tells you that it cannot transfer the songs, but it doesn’t tell you what to do.

What you need to do is, in iTunes, select Advanced > Authorize Computer, then enter your iTunes Music Store user name and password. This will authorize your computer, and you’ll be able to transfer your songs

Q: I use the Apple wired remote with my 4G iPod so I don’t have to take my iPod out of my bag when I’m on the train or walking. When my playlist or album has ended, pressing Play on the remote starts playing my whole library from the beginning. Is there anyway of changing it so that hitting play will shuffle the songs instead?

- Richard

A: Unfortunately, no. After you finish a playlist or an album, the iPod reverts to its default location, which is at the very first song (alphabetically) in your library. Even if you change the main menu display, pressing the Play button on the remote still starts from the first song.

What you could do is turn on shuffle on the iPod (Settings > Shuffle > Songs), which will shuffle everything by song, including albums and playlists. It’s not the ideal solution, since it will prevent you from listening to an album or playlist in order, but it will let you shuffle your songs after the end of an album or playlist.

Q: I am using Microsoft XP Pro and have an 80 GB external hard drive. My songs are arranged by artist in their own folders and inside a main iTunes folder. When I load a folder to be added to the iTunes library, it creates an identical folder outside the grouping I have set up, effectively cutting my drive space in half. If I try to send the new folder to the recycle bin, iTunes won’t let me play the music until I bring it back to its original location. What am I doing wrong?

- Steve

A: It sounds like you want to put your iTunes music in a non-standard location, but haven’t chosen the appropriate settings in iTunes. iTunes’ Advanced Preferences holds the key to this problem.

First, it sounds like you have ?Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library? checked. If so, iTunes copies the songs to the folder that you have designated as the iTunes Music folder. Look at the top section of this preference pane, and you’ll see the location of the iTunes Music folder. You can change that location, or, given the way you’ve described your setup, simply uncheck the Copy option mentioned above.

Q: Is there any iPod software for 3G iPods that will automatically pause music if the headphones are removed, as is the case with 4G iPods?

- Nessim

A: No, this useful feature is only available with 4G iPods, iPod photos, and 2G iPod minis.

Q: I’m currently adding album art images to my MP3 files via iTunes. I was wondering whether there is an ideal width and height that would enhance their appearance in the iPod photo and would make them look sharper while minimizing “pixel distortion.” Is 170x170 pixels OK?

- Takis

A: There are two answers to your question. The easier answer is to use high-resolution artwork and let iTunes handle the sampling for you, and this would be our recommendation. We tried one set each of practical and theoretical tests with the iPod photo’s screen, and found that in our practical tests with an actual piece of album artwork, the differences between iPod album art downsampled from various resolutions were barely if at all noticeable.

However, when you sync your files to your iPod, iTunes downsamples album art to 140x140 pixels for full-screen display, and 56x56 pixels for the thumbnail view (the one that displays with the name of the track and other information). If you want to optimize your artwork for one of these views, choose the appropriate size. For example, if you add 140x140 pixel album art in iTunes, it will appear with no subsequent distortion on the iPod photo when you display it full-sized. However, you will have some distortion when you view it in iTunes, as iTunes has to resample it to display at 200x200 pixels.

If you’d like to try and see exactly what the results are, here are two graphics: this one is a 140x140 pixel pattern, and this one is a 280x280 pixel pattern (which we used to check the 1/4 downsampling). You’ll notice that the 280x280 image looks better in iTunes, but the dots look like flat gray on your iPod photo, whereas the 140x140’s dots display identically on iTunes and the iPod.

Q: How do I name tracks that I imported from CDs when not connected to the Internet? Do I have to erase them from the computer and add them while connected?

- Don

A: If you import tracks from CDs in iTunes, you can use the Advanced > Get CD Track Names command to connect to the CDDB and get the track info. However, if you used other software to convert the songs to digital music files, iTunes won’t be able to check with the CDDB to get this information.

I have just returned from the usa with a 30GB Ipod Photo.  I am imputing my cd collection into itunes but itunes has failed to get any cd information from the internet.  Hence, i have 18 ‘Track 1’s’ etc, etc.
Is there something I have to do to allow the track and album info to be found ? I have used ‘Get CD Track Names’ in the Advanced drop down menu but no luck.
