Q:

I am unable to access my iTunes U downloads on my iPad. iTunes U shows up in the library on iTunes on my computer, but it does not show up in the iPod library on my iPad. How do I access iTunes U downloads on my iPad?

- Sandra

A:

Normally, iTunes U content should appear on the iPad within the iPod application, in a separate iTunes U category near the top of your Library listing above your playlists.

Unfortunately it appears that there is a bug with the iPad OS 3.2 and iTunes 9.2 that affects the display of iTunes U content.  For whatever reason, the “iTunes U” category only appears once you’ve downloaded iTunes U content directly on the iPad—it does not appear if you have only synced iTunes U content from your computer. Fortunately, there’s a simple way to work around this: Just open the iTunes application on your iPad and download an iTunes U episode from there. The episode will be downloaded directly onto your device and the “iTunes U” category will now appear in the iPod application with that newly-downloaded episode. Your synced content may not yet appear, but a subsequent sync with your iTunes library should cause everything to show up properly in the “iTunes U” section on your iPad.

Also note that any video iTunes U episodes will also appear in an iTunes U category within the iPad Videos app.

Q:

I shot a video on my fifth-generation iPod nano. Is it possible to get it onto my iPad? It doesn’t show up on iTunes when I sync my iPod to my laptop and I didn’t see any options to sync or import videos when I synced my iPad. Thanks.

- Bernice

A:

iTunes does not provide any means of transferring your recorded video video content from your iPod nano back to your computer. Instead, the iPod nano should simply show up on your computer as a digital camera and you can transfer your videos across using whatever photo management software your normally use, or by simply opening it through Windows Explorer or Mac OS X Finder if you don’t have a preferred photo application—look for a folder named DCIM if accessing your iPod nano through Windows Explorer or Finder.

If you’re a Mac user and are using the latest version of iPhoto or Aperture you can transfer your videos directly into iPhoto, and then sync them to your iPad along with your other photos. Simply ensure that the album or event containing the video in iPhoto is included in your iPad Photo sync settings in iTunes and make sure you’ve checked the “Include videos” option. The video will appear on your iPad in the Photos application within the respective album and you can play it directly from there.

This also works in much the same way when syncing from a set of folders. Simply ensure the “Include videos” option is selected and then you can simply place the video in one of your photo folders or create a new folder within your photos area and the video will be synced along with your photos from your selected folders.

Alternatively, if you want the video to appear in the “Videos” app on the iPad, you will need to import it into iTunes as a Movie and then sync it in the same way as any other movie. In this case it will appear in the Videos app on the iPad under the “Movies” heading, alongside any actual theatrical movies you may be storing on your iPad.

Q:

I run iTunes on a desktop PC and I transfer albums to my iPod classic. I’m baffled by inconsistent “indexing” on the iPod with regard to Artists. The iTunes Artist usually appears not to be included in the iPod Artist list when the recording is a compilation by various artists, but it’s not always true. I have downloaded an Uncut Magazine CD and the iPod appears to recognize and include the individual Artists in the Artist view. Dozens of other compilations don’t work that way and I can’t retrieve certain Artists on the iPod because of this. Often I can’t remember the album or song name, so I just can’t find it. Conversely, I have ripped a variety of songs from my several albums by the Cajun band, BeauSoleil. These are not compilations. Even though the desktop iTunes sorts by this Artist name, BeauSoleil simply does not show up in the iPod list of Artists. I have a very large capacity on my iPod and over 9,000 songs, so it’s extremely frustrating not to be able to retrieve by Artist. Any suggestions?

- John

A:

This is due to how the iPod handles the display of compilations and there’s actually some logic to it. First keep in mind that the iPod classic only looks at the “Part of a Compilation” flag when the “Compilations” menu option is enabled under the Settings, Main Menu or Settings, Music Menu options. On prior iPod models, there was a specific “Compilations” option to toggle this feature on or off separately.

If both of these menu options are turned OFF, then all artists will be displayed on the artist listing and the concept of Compilations is ignored by the iPod. If either menu item is enabled, then albums that contain tracks tagged as “Part of a Compilation” will be listed under the Compilations menu.

When Compilations are enabled, if all tracks by a given artist are labelled as “Part of a Compilation” then the Artist name is hidden entirely from the Artist listing. However, if a given artist has even a single track that is not tagged as “Part of a Compilation” then the artist’s name is shown in the Artist menu and all of the tracks by that artist will be shown under the Artist’s name, regardless of whether the individual tracks are listed as “Part of a Compilation” or not. Note that this differs from how compilation support behaved on earlier iPod models where tracks tagged as “Part of a Compilation” were never shown under the Artist menu, regardless of whether the Artist otherwise appeared there.

If you don’t regularly use the “Compilations” menu on your iPod classic, then the simplest solution may be to simply turn it off by going to your iPod Settings section and ensuring that it is unchecked under both the Main Menu and Music Menu sections. This will disable Compilation support on the iPod entirely, treating all tracks the same whether they are listed as “Part of a Compilation” or not.

Alternatively, you may want to double-check your “Part of a Compilation” tags in iTunes to ensure that your tracks are labelled as you would expect. Normally, albums where all tracks are by the same artist should not be tagged as “Part of a Compilation” but it’s not uncommon to see erroneous data come through from either the iTunes Store or the Gracenote CD Database that is used to automatically tag tracks imported from CD. It seems many mistakenly believe that the “Part of a Compilation” setting should be used for “Best of” albums and other collections that are not original studio albums, and therefore mistakenly apply this tag to single-artist collections.

Lastly, keep in mind that the iPod does have a Search feature that can be used to locate any artist or album on the device. The Search feature does not filter based on the “Part of a Compilation” flag regardless of whether Compilation support is enabled on the device or not. This should allow you to find artists who may not otherwise appear in the Artist browser.

Q:

I have an iPhone 3G which I will shortly be upgrading to an iPhone 4. I intend to sell the iPhone 3G and want to be certain that all personal information, call records, text messages, emails, internet history, songs, apps etc are deleted before I do so, with no possibility that the new owner can ever restore them. However I still want to retain all this information and data to transfer to my new iPhone 4.What is the best way to do this?

- Dave

A:

The iPhone includes a built-in option to securely erase everything on your device and return it to factory settings. You can find this in the Settings app under General, Reset.

When you’re ready to pack up your iPhone 3G for sale, simply go here and choose “Erase All Content and Settings” and after confirming that you actually want to do this, the iPhone will proceed to do a secure wipe of everything on your device, actually writing over the flash memory to prevent any chance of recovering data. The process will take a couple of hours, after which your iPhone will reboot back to the “Connect to iTunes” screen that appears on a brand new iPhone.

In terms of preserving your existing data before you do this, as long as you’ve synced your iPhone 3G to iTunes and have all of your existing media content and apps in your iTunes library, then you’re ready to go. iTunes automatically takes a backup of your iPhone each time you sync, and you can restore this backup to your iPhone 4 when you first connect it to your computer. You can check the status of your backups by going into your iTunes Preferences and selecting the Devices tab. You should see the name of your iPhone listed here with the date and time of the last backup.

Q:

I bought a whole lot of podcasts from a site called “Instant Anatomy”, which I think goes through Amazon. They sent me the links to the podcasts and I downloaded them and put them on my iPod. But for some reason when I dragged them onto my iPod they got saved in “Recently Purchased Songs”, rather than in Podcasts. How do I move them to podcasts?

- Mara

A:

Only podcasts that are downloaded through iTunes directly are automatically tagged as podcasts. Anything else you import manually gets tagged as a music track by default, and therefore appears alongside your normal music.

You can re-assign individual tracks as podcasts simply by changing their “Media Kind” setting, which can be found by selecting a track, choosing File, Get Info from the iTunes menu and then selecting the “Options” tab.

However, you’re probably better off simply subscribing to the podcast series directly in iTunes itself, rather than downloading and importing the episodes separately. You may want to search the iTunes Store to see if you can find the Podcast there—podcasts are available for free through iTunes and the catalog is very extensive. If it’s not in the iTunes Store Podcast Directory, then you can still subscribe to it manually as long as you have a link to the podcast. Simply choose Subscribe to Podcast from the iTunes Advanced menu and a dialog box will appear where you can enter or paste the URL to the podcast.

Once you’ve pasted in the URL and clicked OK, the Podcast should appear in the Podcasts section in iTunes, and new episodes will be downloaded automatically. You can also download older episodes from here by clicking on the “Get” button that appears beside the episode titles.

Q:

Will iPod and iPhone apps that have been updated with hi-res graphics in support of the new Retina display of the iPhone 4 automatically run fullscreen on the iPad?

- Frank

A:

The short answer is no. Firstly, apps that have been updated for the iPhone 4 must still retain backward compatibility with older iPhone devices and their 480x320 screens, and the iPad will still render these in their lower-resolution format by default. Thus far the only apps that have appeared on the App Store specifically designed to run only on the iPhone 4 do not run on the iPad at all.

The other thing to keep in mind is that with the exception of graphical apps such as games, many apps are simply providing higher-resolution versions of specific artwork and icons within the app, relying on the iPhone 4 to scale other user interface elements to the higher resolution.

That said, however, although iPhone apps will still run in a 480x320 window by default, those apps that have higher-resolution graphics for the iPhone 4 should look better when scaled up to the “2X” size on the iPad, although they will be of a noticeably lower resolution than a native iPad app.

I got my first ipod recently, an ipod touch 3rd generation (8 gig).  I saw the download a few days for the updated software and downloaded it; now I realize I shouldn’t have.  I think it was only for higher memory devices.  Now I’m unable to synch songs from i Tunes without wiping everything else off my iPod.  When I go to My Device and click Music, rather than showing the tunes in my library, I get a single box with the options to synch my entire library or selected files.  But when I click “Sync Music,” I get a message that says, “If you sync your music, everything else will disappear from the iPod.”  And it did, except for the apps.  Will restoring my settings fix this?

I’m new to this so sorry if this question has been asked before. I have the iPhone 3GS with the new 4.0 software. I downloaded songs on my phone, but when I plugged into iTunes, right clicked on my iPhone and selected ‘transfer purchases’ all my songs that I recently purchased (around 30) didn’t sync and aren’t on my phone anymore. How do I get them back? I tried ‘available downloads’ but nothing was there. Thanks in advance for your help! smile Linds
PS I have ‘manually manage songs’ checked
