And now, for this week's Ask iLounge column:

Q: I have a 3G iPod that I am planning to replace when its battery dies. I’m unsure of what I will have to do to set up my new iPod with my current iTunes library and iPod software. Will I have to delete all my old software, and install it with the CD that comes with my new iPod? Do I even have to delete my old software before I put in the cd? Is it as simple as just connecting the new iPod and authorizing it for my computer?

A:It’s pretty simple, actually. If you’ve been keeping the iPod and iTunes software on your computer up to date, then you’ll be able to use your current software. (In any case, if you get a new iPod, you should always check this page to make sure you actually do have the latest version of this software; there may have been an update since your iPod shipped.) Upon connection, the new iPod will fill with your existing iTunes library, and you’ll be all set to listen.

For whatever it’s worth, you don’t really need to replace the 3G iPod if the battery dies - it’s your choice. You can get affordable replacement batteries, such as this one by Newer Technology that we recommend highly, to keep that old iPod spinning for a long time. Apple has also recently lowered its price for replacing iPod batteries to $59, and is offering extended warranties and other benefits to 3G owners with battery problems.

Q: I’m new to the world of iPods. I want to remove some music files from my hard drive (to store on a removable hard drive so I can save space), but I don’t want them to delete from the iPod when I sync. I’d like to be able to sync the files from the computer to the iPod automatically, like I’m doing now, without manually manipulating files. Is this possible?

A: If you want to sync automatically, iTunes makes a mirror copy of its library on your iPod, so you cannot keep files on the iPod and sync that way. Manual syncing allows you to do this, since you choose which files to copy. When you connect the iPod, iTunes does not remove any files from the iPod, and if you want to remove files from the iPod, you must do so manually.

There is a workaround, though it is not very elegant. If you remove the files from your hard disk, but do not delete them from your iTunes library, they’ll show with an ! next to their names, meaning that iTunes cannot find them. They will not, however, be deleted from your iPod when you sync automatically. If you return them to your hard disk, then the ! will go away, as long as you put them in the same location as they were originally.

This isn’t the best way to work with your iPod, though. Have you thought about simply putting your iTunes library on the external drive, if it has enough space?

Q: I got my Apple iPod from HP around Christmas of 2004. It worked fine for about 5 months. Then one day i just plugged it in to charge overnight and when I woke up i thought it wouldnt turn on. Then i finally realized that the contrast was totally gone. It took about a month for it to come back a bit, then it was on the brink of being fixed. I was so happy. Then yesterday I turned it on and it all went away again.

I took it to the Apple Store to the Genius Bar and they told me they couldnt fix it because it was from HP and they arent authorized or something so that made me even more frustrated.

I can hear my music, and the iPod clicks, so I know the cursor is moving, but there is no display - how can i get it back?

A: We’re assuming that you mean the display is “blank” - that the contrast is all the way down. If this is the case, then you can try and reset it even though you don’t see the menus. Press the Menu button several times - at least six times - to make sure you are at the top level of the menus. Then scroll down two clicks, and press the Select button (the middle button). Scroll all the way to the left until you hear no more clicks, then scroll to the right seven clicks. Press the Select button, then scroll to the right. If everything works out right, you’ll have found the Contrast menu, and you’ll be raising the contrast.

The only way this might not work is if you have changed the main menu in the iPod’s settings. If this is the case, you’ll need to reset the iPod using the iPod Software Updater that’s on your computer; warning, this erases all the iPod’s music, but if your music is all in your iTunes library, you’ll get it back with the first sync. From this point, the iPod should be back to its factory settings, and the contrast should be more normal.

If this doesn’t help, then you need to contact HP, which provides customer support by toll-free telephone for one year through its Total Care program. You should be able to contact them easily for a replacement or repair.

Q: Is there a way that I can transfer songs from my iTunes on Mac OS 9.2 to my iTunes on Mac OS X 10.1.5? Both OSes are on the same computer.

A: Just add the songs from the older iTunes library to the new library. In the Mac OS X version of iTunes, select File > Add to Library, and navigate to your Mac OS 9.2 iTunes Music folder. Click Choose, and iTunes adds all your music. This adds all the songs to the new library, but it won’t carry over play counts or playlists.

Q: I have three computers in the house and three separate iPods. Is there a way to share or transfer the music from one computer to another and still be able to use it in the iPods? I purchase the music from the iTunes Music Store and it will not let me do it.

A: Yes, you can do this, but first you must authorize all the computers. You’ll need to copy the music files to each computer (either over a network, if your computers are networked, or by burning the music files onto CDs or DVDs - you can use a CD-RW or DVD-RW disc for this to save plastic).

Once you have added the songs to the iTunes libraries on each computer, you need to authorize the computers. Just double-click any purchased song in iTunes, and enter your iTunes Music Store user name and password when prompted. You’ll need to have Internet access on each computer. When this is done, you’ll be able to use the music on all three computers, and on all three iPods. Note that you can have up to five computers authorized for your iTunes Music Store account.

I just got an iPod mini, and the CD player on my computer isn’t working, which makes it difficult to install the included software. Is there anywhere where I could download it, or anything else I could do so I can start importing music onto my iPod?

I don’t think so. The warranty seems to cover defects in the hardware only, and not loss or damage on the part of the consumer. Don’t lose your iPod!

I am trying to figure out a high quality way of recording the music I play onto a device and then transfering it toa computer for editing with out having to buy expensive equipment. I have a SOny Mini Disc recorder which does allow you to record but no upload to your computer unless you take a 1:1 analog route. Any advice on a system would be greatly appriciated. Russell

my ipod photo’s click wheel doesn’t respond, i can’t browse my songs, folders, not even my menus. though i can click the play, rewind, and forward buttons but i can not turn up or down the volume.. in short, the click wheel just doesn’t work.. what do you think is the problem? can i return it to apple and have them send me a new one?acts_safari@yahoo.com

I bought my Ipod at a Kmart in Australia, and it has stopped working for no reason. I have had the iPod for 6 months, and I cant find the bill. I went to the Apple website and keyed in my serial number and it said that I am under warranty for another 135 days. Will the Kmart have a record that I bought it there? If not, where should I send the ipod for repair?

My PC is running Windows 98 SE and has either a USB 1.0 or USB 1.1 port. Are the requirements on the apple website just recommendations for best performance, or is my pc simply incompatible with the new iPod mini (or any iPod)?
