Q:
Based on something I read on the Omni Group website it looks like iTunes apps can be shared. Quote: “Just like music purchased from iTunes, OmniFocus can be installed on multiple iPhone or iPod touch devices.” This leads me to believe that apps I’ve bought for me can be installed on my wife’s iPhone! Is this too crazy to be true?
- Robert
A:Actually, that is completely true. The iTunes Terms of Service make no distinction between applications purchased from the iTunes App Store and other types of media content. The only exceptions listed are for movie rentals, since these operate differently due to the time-based restrictions.
Provided your wife’s iPhone synchronizes to a computer that is configured for the same iTunes Store account, you can share your purchased applications in much the same way that you can share any other type of purchased content.
Note, however, that since applications cannot be installed manually, you must actually be synchronizing those applications from an authorized computer—you won’t be able to just plug in any iPhone to your computer and drag-and-drop the applications onto it.
If your wife synchronizes her iPhone to a different computer than the one you originally purchased the applications on, simply ensure her computer is authorized for the same iTunes Store account, and then connect your own iPhone to her computer and select File, Transfer Purchases from (your iPhone) from the iTunes menu. This will reverse-sync all purchased content, including applications, from your iPhone back onto her computer. She can then sync those applications directly to her iPhone from there.
Will I be able to use Handbrake with the new iPhone to convert DVD movies to MP4 and bring them into iTunes? I’m trying to decide if I should get the new iPhone or keep my old one.
- Donna
A:Absolutely. There have been virtually no changes to the video formats and capabilities on the new iPhone 3G, and in fact it basically runs the same v2.0 iPhone firmware that is available for your existing iPhone.
Any movies you have previously converted should continue to work without any problems, and you can continue to convert DVDs using Handbrake in the same way that you have in the past.
My brother purchased the new iPhone 3G and is giving me his old iPhone. What do I need to do, if anything, to transfer the phone to my name? Do I just insert my current SIM card?
- Adriana
A:This is a question that is best raised with your wireless carrier in terms of ensuring that you will be able to use your existing SIM card in the iPhone. Some carriers will require that you obtain a new SIM card, and you may also need to sign up for an iPhone plan.
These requirements aside, however, transferring your account to the iPhone really is technically as simple as inserting your SIM card, as long as you have a proper SIM card that the iPhone will accept.
To otherwise reinitialize the iPhone for your own use, you can simply select Settings, General, Reset from the iPhone menus and then choose Erase all Content and Settings.

This will basically return the iPhone to a new “out-of-the-box” configuration, and you can then connect it to iTunes, activate it with your SIM card, and load your own content onto it.
Note that if the iPhone has already been updated to the iPhone v2.0 firmware, the “Erase all Content and Settings” option will take about an hour to run, as it does an actual wipe of the data on the iPhone for security purposes. On prior versions of the iPhone firmware, the option will normally only take a few seconds.
Now that Rogers has brought the iPhone 3G to Canada, does this mean that I can buy an original first-generation iPhone from eBay and use it on the Rogers network? I don’t really want to sign a three-year contract and would rather just buy the iPhone outright. 3G also doesn’t interest me, as I live in Northern Ontario where there are barely decent EDGE services. Will features like Visual Voicemail now work up here with the original with the original iPhone?
- Gilles
A:Unfortunately, first-generation iPhones may normally only be activated on carriers/networks that they were originally available on. This means that if you have an AT&T iPhone, you will not be able to activate it on the Rogers network legitimately—you will still need to jailbreak and unlock the iPhone the same way you would have previously needed to do.
The problem is that before you can use your iPhone, it must be “activated” by iTunes (this is also sometimes referred to as “unbricking”). During this process, iTunes looks up your IMEI (phone serial number) and ICCID (SIM card serial number) in its database to determine if these are valid and if they match an authorized model and combination of iPhone and SIM card. Connecting a first-generation iPhone in this case, even with a perfectly valid iPhone 3G SIM card inserted into it will result in iTunes reporting that it cannot activate your iPhone as you do not have a valid carrier-supported SIM card.
This back-end database used by iTunes appears to be tied into the supported carrier networks, and there have been reports of some carriers “activating” first-generation iPhones. Presumably if the carrier adds your first-gen iPhone IMEI into their system, iTunes would be able to activate your iPhone. However, Rogers has at this point stated that it is against their policy to do this and that they will not activate any first-generation iPhones on their network.
Further, unless you can actually convince your carrier to actually “activate” your first-generation iPhone, chances are they will not be able or willing to add the Visual Voicemail feature either. Visual Voicemail must be provisioned on the carrier’s side, and most carriers will not enable it unless you have an iPhone that was purchased and activated by them.
The bottom line, it seems, is that for now first-generation iPhones are in the same state as they were prior to the iPhone 3G launch. If it was available in your country prior to the launch, you should still be able to use it, but the iPhone 3G expansion has not automatically brought older iPhone compatibility along with it.
I recently updated my iPod touch to the new v2.0 firmware, and now when I connect it to my computer, iPhoto pops up and sees it as a camera. Does the iPod touch actually have a camera in it now? I can’t seem to find one, and there are never any pictures available to download from the device itself.
- Rob
A:The iPod touch does not include a camera, but with the release of the v2.0 iPod touch firmware, you now have the ability to save photos onto your device from other applications. For example, tapping on a photo in an e-mail message or holding your finger on a web page photo will bring up an option to save that particular photo onto your device. Likewise, you can take screenshots by pressing the HOME and SLEEP/WAKE buttons simultaneously.
All of these photos get saved into a “Saved Photos” section under your “Photos” app on the iPod touch:

Note, however, that this “Saved Photos” section only appears when you actually have some saved photos. You can browse and work with these saved photos in the same way as any other photo in your iPod touch library, including e-mailing them out or using them for contacts or wallpaper. However, as an added bonus, the iPod touch now provides the same method for transferring these saved photos to your computer as the iPhone does—the device simply appears as a PTP Camera when you connect it to your computer via a USB port, prompting whatever application you normally have assigned for photo import to start up and offer to import these photos for you.
I recently purchased a new iPhone 3G and was wondering how to configure my GMail account for “Push” e-mail services? The AT&T rep told me told that I could get “Push” e-mail with my current GMail account, and I’ve got my account all set up on the iPhone and mail is coming in, but it doesn’t seem to show up automatically when I get a new message. Is there something else I need to do or configure on GMail’s end? Thanks for any help you can provide.
- Sue
A:Unfortunately, the iPhone does not provide “Push” e-mail with GMail. The AT&T rep you were speaking with may have been confusing the iPhone with the RIM Blackberry, which does support push with GMail through RIM’s Blackberry Internet Service (BIS).
The Blackberry and the iPhone both use completely different proprietary “push” technologies for e-mail, so they are not inherently compatible with one another. Whether GMail plans to update their systems to offer this functionality in the future is not certain, but as of today it is simply not available.
If you need “push” functionality with the iPhone, your options are limited to Apple’s MobileMe service, Yahoo, or a Microsoft Exchange server via ActiveSync. All other e-mail systems operate on a “Fetch” basis, and will poll for e-mail on whatever schedule you set, ranging from every 15 minutes to simply polling manually on-demand.
Note that the iPhone Mail app does immediately check for mail whenever you open it, so the only distinction is that non-push accounts will not proactively deliver your mail to the device and notify you of it immediately—you’ll have to wait for the next polling interval.
You can check which accounts are configured for “Push” and which ones support it simply by going into Settings, Fetch New Data on the iPhone. The main screen will allow you to globally set whether push is enabled, and set the polling interval for those accounts that do not support push e-mail:

Tapping on the “Advanced” button will take you to a screen where you can configure each of your accounts individually:

Accounts that support “Push” normally have this enabled by default, but you can change these to either “Fetch” or “Manual” on a per-account basis. Accounts that do not support “Push” will only have the “Fetch” or “Manual” options available for their settings.

Will the iPhone 3G allow emails to be received by your PC and iPhone simaltaneously? Will the emails remain on both devices until deleted?

I can’t seem to find a way to use my iPod Touch (16GB) to store files; just use it as a removable hard drive. Apple’s site says the Touch can’t be used in disk mode, and the only software I’ve seen reference to (can’t remember the name) says it will work on firmware V 1.1.1 - 1.1.4 but my unit is currently 2.0.
What I REALLY want to do is be able to store an html file and associated jpegs in a folder, and then access that file from the built-in Safari browser in the Touch. Am I hoping for the un-doable?

I now get “voicemail Unabailable” “your account may not be configured properly for this feature. How do I fix this? And, how did this happen just charging the phone?

I just recently bought a 32GB itouch. When I went to go plug it up onto my computer to charge/open it, it wouldnt. A little box appeared and said, “this version of itunes is not compatible with your device. Please install the updated itunes to resume using.” I just got a new computer and apparently it didnt have the updated itunes on there. I still have the old version. My friend said he would activate my itouch for me at his house and then give it back to me the next day so I can use it. My question is, since my itouch will now be acitvated since my friend has the updated itunes, when I want to start syncing music to my itouch, will it prevent me from doing so even though its already activated and I still have the old version of itunes on my computer? I need this answered asap!
