Audio Formats Explained And Rated

I really wish ipod supported ogg-vorbis.
Call me an open source zealott but I still believe that ogg is the future of audio.

iPods for Windows: It's a good thing?

Aaron:

This is an interesting line of thought - as a long time PC user, the iPod is the ONLY Apple product I have ever considered for a number of reasons - inertia probably at the top.

However, my iPod also provides insight to a number of reasons to be very cautious with Apple products:

1. I run win 98SE at home - like MILLIONS of others. If the lack of 3Gen support for Win 98SE is how Apple wants to ‘wow’ the Windows world, well that is just a broken customer service model.

2. Durability - the iPod is a scratch-friendly, smudge friendly product. IT LOOKS GREAT IN THE BOX - but I use it outside of the box (I’ve been dying to use that line). The premise of the iPod is portability - so why build it for ballerinas? The girls at Apple need to get to know the men at Garmin - they know how to build a rugged portable unit .

This is where otherewise great industrial design seems to fall flat at Apple.

3. Portability again: the carrying case provided with a $500 US 30GB iPod appears to have come from some southeast Asian sweatshop. Cheap and totally lacking in functional features. Slip, trip and fail.

My thoughts?  Apple gets a big MAYBE.

for the same price I could have bought a new PC with Windows XP on it .......

iPods for Windows: It's a good thing?

I don’t have an answer for your specific question, although I can;t see why there would be difference between the two.

I would say the following though - normal USB would be hopeless. To ‘fill’ a 30gb Ipod would take something like 8 1/2 hours, bearing in mind you’d be transferring data at maybe 1mb/second.

Firewire runs at something like 400 x that speed. I’m not sure about USB2, but it’s a lot faster.

If you were thinking about it, budget for a firewire or USB2 card as well - they’re not particularly expensive.

Hope that helps!

iPod Adventures in the Middle East: Part I

That guy actually made me laugh my ### off.

It clearly shows (by reverse psycology) that he is actually the one that tapes his phone sex calls and puts them on his ipod then sits behind his computer all day for something to do.

He just wanted to express his true feelings and actions with out getting any backlash.  It’s okay dude, you are who you are and nobody can change that. Really its ok,  I’m sure there is a support group out there for you.  While you are waiting you might want to learn how to spell “hat”.

If Apple are looking for the iPod killer app, it would have to be the card reader mentioned above. Finally, the lack of film on digital cameras ceases to be a problem for people going on long trips, and we find something to do with all those gigs of space!

iPod Adventures in the Middle East: Part I

Finally made it to Baghdad…..whew!  I actually got to stay in one of Saddams palaces,  the sucker is huge and nothing but marble and yes…i have pics.  They will be coming…I promise.  We are getting things set up now so give me a little time and I will get them posted.

I will tell you what…after being shot at a couple of times over here…I have full respect for all military units that do this for a living.

Now if you don’t mind I have to put my Kevlar on and get to work.

Later,

Switching from MP3 to AAC Without Losing Your Mind

just so things are clear.. if you convert a smaller bitrate to a larger one the file size will get larger..(not much larger… the size will be nearly the same). A larger bitrate will get smaller…  that’s what happens when Converting to AAC.  sorry, i shoulda add’d that earlier just forgot.  have a great time with the new format!!!

Can anyone corroberate my ‘better’ experience… opinion?  (never made a scientific claim.. but..to me.. it sounds better.  wink  )

Switching from MP3 to AAC Without Losing Your Mind

Funny thing, everything I’ve converted to AAC sounds….well,  better.  even some ol’ 96 kbps files sound better… The file sizes increased, but everything sounds better…  you can change the size of your AAC bitrate to 192 etc in iTunes.. check the preferences…  and if your mp3 setting is 160 your 128 kbps AAC files will sound sooooo much better.  It’s all in the Listening.  AAC comes from the iTunes Store.  protected AAC to be exact.
