How the new iPod touch does FaceTime | iLounge Backstage

How the new iPod touch does FaceTime

As you’re probably aware by now, Apple unveiled a new iPod touch earlier today which, among other things, brings a second device into the FaceTime family. When FaceTime was introduced on the iPhone 4 earlier this year, Apple chose to integrate it with the built-in Phone app, a logical choice considering how the company wants to present it as just another type of phone call. Apple also used users’ actual cellular phone numbers from the iPhone 4 to register devices with its FaceTime servers and allow users to place calls to each other.

The problem, of course, is that the iPod touch has no Phone app nor an actual phone number to register with the FaceTime network. Contrary to a suspicious rumor that claimed Apple would add a VoIP Phone application to the iPod touch, Apple instead added a new standalone FaceTime app to the iPod touch specifically for handling FaceTime calls. It now simply uses the user’s e-mail address to identify them on the FaceTime network, a change that has already been discovered in the iOS 4.1 betas. iPhone users who want to call iPod touch users can simply select their e-mail address to initiate a FaceTime call, although you’ll need to upgrade to iOS 4.1 on your iPhone in order to do so.

iPod touch users will also apparently need an Apple ID to actually register their e-mail addresses with the FaceTime network, but it’s not clear whether this will happen transparently as it does on the iPhone or whether the user will need to complete some type of sign-in process.

can you from a ipod to ipod?

Posted by hernan on December 26, 2010 at 5:40 PM (CST)

So when you use facetime can you hear the other person or is it just a video??

Posted by Taylor on December 26, 2010 at 7:41 PM (CST)

Gage, you need to go into settings on the iPod choose FaceTime icon and open it up. Check you have sorted your apple id which must be verified via a link that will be sent to your own email address ( the one you use for your apple Id! You can do it via the ipod, just carefully follow the links. Good luck…! I did manage to sort the prob I had earlier but it’s def more tricky iPod to iPod that with the phone. I think having spent 24 hours reading the various forums etc it maybe a wifi firewall thing!!!

Do you have to download anything in order to use FaceTime or can you just use it by inserting a friends email who also owns the new iPod touch?

Posted by Jessica on December 28, 2010 at 10:35 PM (CST)

Umm when I click on facetime for my iPod it brings me to my contact list how am I suppose to type in there email if it will only let me pick a contact number

Posted by Ally on December 29, 2010 at 3:02 AM (CST)

Apple IDs are completely free.  You can sign up for one right from within the FaceTime app and you need only provide your name and e-mail address, which you will then need to verify by clicking on a link in an e-mail that is sent to you (much the same way for many other services you sign up for).

Apple IDs are used for many different things, from FaceTime to Apple produce registration to the iTunes Store.  Only the iTunes Store portion requires you to use a credit card or gift card, since it presumes you’re going to actually use the account to buy something.  That said, even with the iTunes Store you can sign up for an account by simply trying to download a free app.

To place FaceTime calls from the iPod touch you will need to add the person as a contact with their e-mail address (for a Mac or another iPod touch) or their phone number (for making FaceTime calls to an iPhone 4).  You can add contacts through the “Contacts” app or by syncing them from another contacts app via iTunes.

You do not need to download anything special to use FaceTime on the new iPod touch—it’s built into the system in the same way that the other apps are, and should appear on the main home screen by default.  You do have to login with an Apple ID and verify the e-mail address you wish to use, however.

FaceTime requires that you be signed in with an Apple ID and have a verified e-mail address.  If you have not yet verified your e-mail address by checking your inbox and clicking the link in the received e-mail, you will need to do this before you can place or receive FaceTime calls.  Always be sure to check your spam/junk mail box in case the verification e-mail ends up dropped in there instead.

Firewalls and some types of routers can prevent FaceTime from working, however it should usually work from any public Wi-Fi hotspot and definitely works at all of the Apple Stores.  This can be a difficult issue to troubleshoot, but the rule of thumb is that if you can get FaceTime working from a public Wi-Fi network at work or school but can’t get it working at home, chances are it’s a router configuration problem.

So will there be an app for the iPod so that I can video chat with my family on the other side of the country using skype? If so approximately how far away from now? I feel it was a waist to make the new iPod with the camera and have a skype app and not be able to use the skype app with the “new camera”

Posted by Sarah on December 29, 2010 at 3:22 PM (CST)

That’s ultimately up to Skype.  There doesn’t seem to be anything preventing them from bringing out an iPhone/iPod touch app that supports video—they already have one for audio purposes.

Other app developers such as Fring have released updates to their apps that make use of the front camera.  It’s unclear what’s holding Skype back from doing so.

I have the new ipod touch and i have used facetime a couple of times and it has worked perfectly! But i have talked to my friend that i would like to chat with and she even showed me her information. I have tried many times to facetime her with both her ipod number and her email, but a note always pops up saying “Facetime failed” and then it tells me that she is not available for facetime. How can i get it to work so we can facetime?

Does the iPod have to have FaceTime app opened to receive a facetime request?

Posted by Blake on December 29, 2010 at 10:24 PM (CST)

No Blake it will just ring with message telling you that *friends name*. Requests FaceTime then you accept or decline then it will show connecting for a while then all being well bingo and your pal will appear!!

Is facetime really all free? From iPod 4th gen to another iPod 4th gen?

Posted by Brianna on December 30, 2010 at 9:25 PM (CST)

If you get a portable Wi-Fi modem (like the Virgin Mobile MiFi which you can carry in your pocket), you can use any wireless feature on your iPod Touch 4 ANYWHERE in the USA.  You don’t have to be at home or at a place with free Wi-Fi. (zomgz, FaceTime anywhere, since you can carry the MiFi in your pocket)

Google Virgin Mobile Mi-Fi :p

The call does not ring for one second before saying “Facetime failed: *So and so* is not available at this time.” But we have been talking for hours now! I know she is right in front of her ipod and she would answer me if i called her. She told me she could call me just fine. I, on the other hand, have to call her 1,000,000 times w/ that same message. Please tell me what to do & how to fix this problem:) Thanx!:)))

I have a child with a new iPod touch and went to check on homework to find her facetiming with a friend.  We have password protected wireless and she does not know the password.  This way she can use the internet outside of the home where HOME work is supposed to take place.  When confronted, she said she was using a neighbor’s network.  I checked and there were no available networks in the neighborhood.  Her friend was able to facetime her but when she tried to facetime the friend she couldn’t because she can’t get on our network.  Is it possible that friends with wireless can facetime to her and she not be able to initiate facetimes to them?  How did her friend get through to her if my daughter doesn’t have wireless access.  These are two new iPod touches.

Hi!  This has nothing to do with facetime.  I have an ipod 64GB 2nd generation.  I’m currently using a calculator in an ipod.  The question that I have is when I press on a decimal point button, it always come out with a comma.  How can you change the setting and switch it from comma to a decimal point?  Without decimal point, you cannot do any math problems.  Decimal point is very important when you’re dealing with prices on a certain product.  I’ve looked through many website on how to solve this problem.  Can you help me please?  Thanx
