The focus at Griffin Technology’s booth at the 2011 CES was on smart little electronics—sub-$100 home, car, and kids accessories that often integrate with new iOS applications to great effect. Arguably the most mainstream of the company’s debuts was a collaboration with Crayola to develop an interactive coloring book and stylus set for the iPad, using a unique battery powered $30 crayon stylus that interacts in a special way with the iPad’s screen to let kids color without either accidentally wiping their fingers on the screen, or going outside the lines of objects if a certain setting is activated. Both the software and the stylus, which is required for the app, really impressed us.

Griffin also showed CarTrip, a $90 accessory and app set that link into the on board computers found in post-1996 cars, enabling the user to track the car’s performance over time, and also to instantly understand problem codes that normally would require diagnosis by a repair shop. Other notable products included its just-named Beacon universal remote system ($80), which pairs a Dijit/Umee-developed application for iPhone/iPod touch/iPad with a IR emitter box that wirelessly controls a bunch of devices without requiring an iDongle, and BlueTrip Aux, a tiny iOS Bluetooth streaming/phone call-to-aux-in port or -FM transmitter solution for car use.
