Model: Hinged Lid iPad Box

Price: $235

Compatible: iPad (2010)

Substrata Hinged Lid iPad Box

While Substrata's new Hinged Lid iPad Box ($235) isn't the most practical or affordable design we've ever seen, it's certainly one of the most beautiful iPad cases around. Custom made to order by the company's wood artisans, the microsuede-lined Box encloses your iPad inside, optionally holding it in place using two small circular pieces on the device's corners, and closes with a large lid that has two latches on the bottom. The lid enables you to prop the iPad up vertically or horizontally, albeit on very different angles. You choose either to have the iPad's Dock Connector port or headphone port -- one or the other -- exposed when the case is open, while the other is blocked depending on which orientation you've placed the iPad in; volume control access is similarly impaired by the shape of the wood. Apart from those non-trivial issues, the case is so solid and attractively assembled that it's easy to fall in love with on looks alone.

Company: Agent18

Website: www.Agent18.com

Model: EcoShield+

Price: $40

Compatible: iPhone 4

Agent 18 EcoShield+ for iPhone 4

Interestingly made from recycled plastic with a unique flip-out video stand and slide-open protective door for the headphone port, Agent 18's new EcoShield+ for iPhone 4 ($40) is largely solid and opaque black or white with rubber button protectors on the left and top surfaces, and matching rubber grips on the sides. While you can use the speakerphone with the case on due to holes in its bottom piece, accessory use requires you to slide that piece off, which can be a little tough if you've supplied and installed your own screen protector; the case is tailored for use without one, and leaves the iPhone's face exposed other than around the bezel.

Company: Incipio

Model: EDGE

Price: $30

Compatible: iPhone 4

Incipio EDGE for iPhone 4

Slider cases -- two-piece plastic shells that separate near the bottom of Apple's devices -- have become popular over the last few years, and Incipio's EDGE for iPhone 4 ($30) is its latest version -- a matte rubber-finished hard plastic shell that comes with a piece of screen film, a cleaning cloth and applicator card. The camera hole on the back is black-lined regardless of the color of the case to prevent flash problems, and holes provide access to headphone and Dock Connector ports, microphones and speakers; EDGE's headphone port is really quite small, though. Four colors are available this year.

Company: Hard Candy/Gumdrop

Website: www.Gumdropcases.com

Model: Moto Skin

Price: $25

Compatible: iPod touch 4G

Gumdrop Cases Moto Skin for iPod touch 4G

Here it is -- the first fourth-generation iPod touch case in the United States: Gumdrop Cases' Moto Skin for iPod touch 4G ($25) started shipping in small quantities yesterday, the same day as the iPod touch 4G arrived in stores. While it's not surprising given the fact that Gumdrop had it ready before Apple even announced the final design, Moto Skin doesn't have a hole for the new model's bottom speaker grille, but it impressively both fits the slimmer model's new curves, and has reasonably-sized holes for its camera, microphone, side buttons and ports. Made from stiff, tire tread-like rubber in your choice of three colors, Moto Skin doesn't include screen protection.
