When designing the next iPod you can't forget the main feature that puts the iPod above all the rest... the scroll wheel. It has yet to be beaten and for good reason. But, if you're going to include a scroll wheel you have to make sure it's still usable. That's why when compared with the mini, only a minimal amount of space was taken off the width. The majority of the bulk was removed from the thickness and a little more from the height.
