Paracable Lightning Cables — Continuum, Gecko, 1.21 Giggawatts

Paracable is a small company that makes only one type of product — Lightning Cables — but it focuses on doing that one thing extremely well. Paracable’s cables are Apple MFi-certified and available in five fun styles, each with an appropriately whimsical moniker to match, ranging from the flux-capacitor-inspired “1.21 Giggawatts” (“Roads? Where we’re going, we don’t need roads.”) to the bright green “Gecko” and the sci-fi-esque “Continuum.”

ToughTested 8' Pro Armor Weave Lightning Cable

We know how handy it is to have at least one extra-long Lightning cable around, and ToughTested’s 8’ Pro Armor Weave Cable ($28) definitely fits the bill. ToughTested has included a five-year warranty with the MFi-certified cable. Pro Armor Weave is 2.4A rated, and ToughTested has done its best to make the cable durable. The cable is covered with a woven polymer jacket, and both ends have aluminum tips.

IvySkin Reel Lightning-to-USB Cable

Third-party Lightning cables are plentiful at this point, but IvySkin’s Reel ($20) cable stands out a bit from the crowded pack. The 1m Lightning-to-USB cable comes in five different colors, each with a braided leather look and feel. Reel also comes with a genuine leather strap to keep the cable together during storage or travel. We understand there are some who will only buy official Apple cables, but IvySkin’s Reel feels more durable and looks nicer than an Apple Lightning cable, for about the same price. Reel is, however, thicker near the plug itself, which may make it tougher to fit in some cases.

Booq Shadow Messenger Bag

Booq’s new Shadow messenger bag is made to fit MacBooks from 12” to 15”. The bag comes in two variations — a black nylon bag or a gray fiber bag. We received the black nylon bag, and it happens to be a light ballistic nylon with water-repellent coating. As always, Booq’s Terralinq lost-and-found service comes with the bag.

Lifedge Ultimate Charge/Sync Cable

It’s always useful to have extra Lightning cables, and we’ve found that having at least one extra-long cable around often comes in handy. The U.K.-based Lifedge has released its Ultimate Charge/Sync Cable (£25, about $38.50), a 6.5 foot Lightning cable. The cable is completely waterproof — it’s also said to be fray-proof and corrosion-proof — and Lifedge offers a lifetime guarantee with the product. Ultimate Charge/Sync Cable comes with a compact cable organizer, as well. Considering the extra shipping costs from the U.K., the already high price will likely be a bit steep for most American customers, but those in search of a long, well-made, waterproof Lightning cable might want to take a look.

IK Multimedia iRig PowerBridge

IK Multimedia’s new iRig PowerBridge ($70) is a new accessory that solves an issue we’ve had with IK’s Lightning-connected studio accessories for a while — the problem of powering your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch while using them. Devices such as the iRig PADS, iRig KEYS, and iRig Mic HD connect to the Lightning port, so you can’t normally connect your iOS device to power at the same time. While this is fine for casual use, it can be a problem for anybody looking for a serious studio session.

Lunatik Epik Apple Watch Kit

Lunatik’s upcoming Epik Apple Watch Kit combines a band with a rugged cover that protects the Apple Watch. There are four different types of Epik kit: a polycarbonate cover with silicone band ($70) and an aluminum cover with a link band ($200) represent the low and high ends of the spectrum. We received two kits in the mid-range: aluminum with silicone band ($140), and aluminum with leather band ($150). The two band pieces are screwed into the aluminum cover itself — these kits don’t use the Apple Watch’s grooves for bands. The kits come with two extra screws, an allen wrench, and a small screwdriver for connecting the band to the cover.

Just Mobile AluCable Duo, AluCable Duo mini + AluCable Duo twist

Just Mobile has introduced three new USB cables with built-in versatility — AluCable Duo, AluCable Duo mini, and AluCable Duo twist. The “Duo” in the name comes from the functionality, as all three cables can charge devices via Lightning or micro-USB — an attached Lightning plug can be linked to the micro-USB plug for iOS device charging. AluCable Duo and Duo mini are out now, while Duo twist will be released in the near future.

Scosche strikeLINE Rugged LED

Scosche’s strikeLINE Rugged LED ($20) is the third LED Lightning to micro-USB cable we’ve seen in recent weeks. Like the others (Scosche’s flatOUT LED and Just Mobile’s AluCable LED), strikeLINE Rugged LED is meant to tell users when a device is done charging at a glance — it glows red when charging, and blue when fully charged, via a small LED on the Lightning side of the cable.

Scosche flatOUT LED

Scosche’s flatOUT LED ($20) is the second recent Lightning cable we’ve seen that uses a built-in LED to inform users if a iOS device is charging or fully charged. Unlike Just Mobile’s AluCable LED, which contains a small LED on the USB plug of the cable, flatOUT LED’s indicator is next to the Lightning plug side of the cable. A flat, tangle-free cable is another key part of the 3-foot flatOUT LED’s design.

Just Mobile AluCable LED

Just Mobile’s AluCable LED is a 1-meter aluminum-accented Lightning cable with a small LED built into the USB plug head. The light lets users know whether or not an iOS device is done charging without having to look at the device’s screen — the LED is designed to pulse amber when charging, and glow solid green when a device is fully charged.
