Twelve South BookBook for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

While not everybody is a fan of folio cases for an iPhone, Twelve South’s BookBook is among the classiest and most unique cases you’ll find in this style, and the company has of course updated its classic BookBook lineup with BookBook for iPhone 7 ($70) and BookBook for iPhone 7 Plus ($70). Still available in the classic colours of vintage brown leather and black, BookBook provides a wallet case that’s unlike any other, with generous room for storing cards — especially on the Plus version — and the aesthetic design of an old book.

X-Doria Defense Lux Wood Line for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

X-Doria’s taken its classic Defense Lux case in a stylish new direction with its new Wooden Line, taking the same basic design of the Lux cases and backing them with a real wood finish. It adds a nice touch of old-world class to an already nice case design, and it’s worth mentioning that X-Doria’s done a good thing with the pricing on the entire Defense Lux line of cases since we first reviewed the iPhone 6 and 6s versions; the basic cases now sell for a considerably lower price of $35, with a $5 premium added onto the wood versions. Lux Wood is available in two colour options — bamboo with a silver metal frame and walnut with a black metal frame.

Twelve South BookBook for iPad (Fifth-Generation)

We’ve long been fans of Twelve South’s style, and the company’s BookBook cases for iPhone and iPad devices are among the classiest we’ve seen. So we were quite pleased to see the company announce that its BookBook for iPad ($80) is fully compatible with Apple’s new fifth-generation iPad . Although we’re not entirely surprised — any non-fitted case for the original iPad Air should be able to handle the new iPad — it’s good to see companies taking the guesswork out of this by making it clear to their customers. BookBook for iPad is available in the same classic black and vintage brown colours ($80), or the special Rutledge Edition ($90).

Gear4 Trafalgar for iPhone 7 Plus

Gear4’s Trafalgar ($40) for the iPhone 7 Plus is another one of the company’s stylish new protective cases built from D3O material for a high degree of drop protection without adding too much extra bulk. The slim protective cases feature a brushed metal look on the outside in either gold, rose gold, or silver colors, with D3O material inside for maximum shock absorption.

Cover-Up Stone Explorer for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

If you’re looking for something a little different in a case for your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus, you’ll want to check out Cover-Up’s new Stone Explorer collection. Each case features attractive real, hand-finished slate on the back, and since it’s cut from real rock, no two cases will be exactly the same. The Explorer line also features a tough, shock absorbent outer shell with textured edges for a good grip and full button coverage, and it’s thin enough on the bottom that you shouldn’t have a problem with most Lightning docks. While these aren’t the most protective cases you’re going to find, they’re definitely some of the most interesting and unique.

Gear4 Piccadilly and Soho for iPhone 7

Gear4’s Piccadilly ($40) and Soho ($40) are two new cases for the iPhone 7 that, thanks to the company’s use of D3O material, provide military-grade drop protection while remaining more stylish and unobtrusive compared to a lot of other drop-proof cases we’ve seen.

Catalyst Case for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

We’ve been pretty impressed with Catalyst’s cases for prior iPhone models and the iPad mini, which provide waterproof and drop protection at a pretty reasonable price. So we were quite pleased to see that Catalyst has continued the trend with the Catalyst Case for iPhone 7 ($80) and Catalyst Case for iPhone 7 Plus ($90). Both cases offer the kind of waterproof protection that Catalyst is known for, extending it to greater depths; although it’s only rated IP68, since that’s as high as the scale goes, Catalyst actually certifies it well beyond that standard for submersion in up to 33 feet (10m) of water — well beyond the iPhone 7’s own base IP67 rating.

ExoLens Case for iPhone 7 (ZEISS Lenses)

If you’re a serious iPhone photographer, ExoLens’ new Case for iPhone 7 ($50) could very well be the final piece you’ve been waiting for. While we were very impressed with the lens in the ExoLens PRO with Optics by ZEISS Wide-Angle Lens Kit that we looked at last week, the main downside of the Pro kit is that you have to take off your case — or simply go caseless — to use it, risking your iPhone in the process. Fortunately, for iPhone 7 users, this new case will let you attach and detach any of ExoLens’ ZEISS lenses with relative ease.

GettaGrip Grip2ü Boss for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

While bigger screens are nice, the downside to larger 4.7” and 5.5” iPhone models is that they can be more of a challenge to handle, making protective cases all the more necessary. This is clearly where GettaGrip is going with its new Grip2ü Boss ($30) for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus — a case designed to not only provide drop protection, but hopefully to prevent you from dropping your iPhone in the first place. The case is made from fused TPU and polycarbonate materials, giving it a softer interior surrounded by a hard polycarbonate shell, which the company claims will withstand drops of up to 10 feet. The Boss is available in six attractive color options.

Gear4 Oxford Bookcase for iPhone 7 Plus

While we’ve personally never been big fans of iPhone folio cases in general, we do acknowledge that some users who like to carry their iPhone in a purse or shoulder bag may benefit from the tradeoff between full front screen protection and quick accessibility. If you fit into that category, Gear4’s updated Oxford Bookcase ($50) is worth a look. Unlike many of the folio cases we’ve seen that emphasize style over protection, Gear4 has built Oxford out of patented, shockproof D3O material, so it not only provides a cover for your iPhone screen, but “military-grade” drop protection as well.

Gear4 Buckingham for iPad mini 4

Gear4’s new Buckingham ($70) is a stylish new folio case for the iPad mini 4 that uses D3O’s patented technology to provide “military grade” shock absorption and impact protection without adding extra bulk to the case. The iPad mini fits snugly into the base of the case, which provides full side and top button coverage as well as a raised edge at the front. The folio cover and rear of the case is made from a sleek, matte black material, with an exposed plastic section on the back that seems designed for holding your finger in a comfortable position against the back of the case when using the iPad.

Mophie Juice Pack Air for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

Mophie’s Juice Pack Air ($100) has arrived for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The wireless charging case can fully recharge an iPhone 7, while the iPhone 7 Plus case can recharge the larger iPhone back up to 60 percent battery. A matte slider-style case, Juice Pack Air’s Lightning connector plugs into the iPhone, while the case can be recharged using a micro-USB port at the bottom, or one of Mophie’s Charge Force magnetic wireless charging accessories. Juice Pack Air comes in five colors — black, rose gold, gold, blue, and red. A micro-USB cord is included, but sadly there’s no headphone port of any kind, so you’ll be unable to use wired earphones without removing the case.

Distil Union Wally Ether for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

Distil Union’s popular Wally wallets and wallet phone cases have arrived on iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus with Wally Ether. A leather-backed shell case, Wally Ether offers little protection for an iPhone, but it can store up to three cards in its compartment. Wally Ether uses the clever Wally Pull-Tab found in other Wally wallets, which allows users to pull the cards out using the tab. Pushing the cards back into the case causes the tab to retract. It’s an effective way to access your cards, and it also minimizes the case’s bulk — which is a problem with a lot of wallet cases.

Belkin Case + Stand for Apple Pencil

Apple Pencil is a well-regarded peripheral for iPad Pro, so most criticisms of Pencil end up being questions of where you should keep the thing when it’s not in use. Companies have introduced accessories to this end, and some of our favorite iPad Pro cases also offer a holding place for a Pencil. In the same vein, Belkin has introduced Case + Stand for Apple Pencil, which is meant to be an all-in-one solution for Pencil users. Case + Stand does exactly what it claims to do — it’s a storage case for Apple Pencil which doubles as a vertical stand for the peripheral. The case is made of white plastic and gray matte silicone, the latter of which is also found in the recessed tip holder of the stand.

Hex Focus Case, Icon Wallet + Solo Wallet for iPhone 7/7 Plus

Hex has brought a number of its cases to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, including the Focus Case ($30-$40), Icon Wallet ($50-$60), and Solo Wallet ($30-$40). The $10 price differences represent a gap between the iPhone 7 cases and iPhone 7 Plus cases. We’ve already reviewed the Icon Wallet and Solo Wallet for iPhone 6, and the Focus Case is basically Solo Wallet without any card slots — the latter two cases are shell cases, and don’t really warrant a full review. (Solo Wallet’s fit is now better than it was two years ago.) Icon Wallet’s design hasn’t really changed, either — refer back to the last review for further details.
