Apple offers Smart Case for Retina iPad mini cellular delays

Apple is currently offering free Smart Cases to customers who are still awaiting shipments of their Wi-Fi + Cellular versions of the iPad mini with Retina display. Via telephone at 1-800-692-7753, Apple customer service representatives are offering either the free case or a free Smart Cover to customers who have been waiting for a new cellular Retina iPad mini, and call to inquire about the delay/status of the shipment.


Following forum reports, iLounge has confirmed that Apple representatives are offering the Smart Case to customers. Most iPad mini with Retina display Wi-Fi + Cellular pre-orders placed on the first day of availability appear not to have shipped, however, many Wi-Fi-only units have shipped in varying capacities and colors.

Are you sure it’s just the cellular? I ordered a wi-fi only 64GB space grey mini 2 on the first day hours before they announced sales were live and it’s still “processing” with the delivery window extending into December. Hardly seems fair to already be placating the wifi+cellular purchasers when orders like mine are equally delayed.

@CJ…I tried as we’ll with no luck.  I was offered 2-3 day shipping (moved up my timeline by 1 day - wow).  Oddly, as soon as I got off the call, my order went from processing to preparing for shipment.

Tonight my order has also gone to “Preparing for Shipment”. At least it should get here before December :)

The way that it work(ed/s): if someone called and asked about the delay in shipment, a free cover/case was offered along with expedited shipping. From several reports we’ve subsequently received, it sounds like (a) some people called and asked not about _status,_ but ‘how do I get my free case,” and (b) Apple may have stopped offering the cases. It was a nice gesture by the company to make customers feel better about having to wait an extended period of time for the Retina minis.
