AT&T lists Wi-Fi access with iPhone plans

Following the brief appearance of “Free AT&T Wi-Fi for iPhone” pages at some AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots, the US iPhone carrier has officially listed Wi-Fi access as being included with iPhone rate plans. The company’s iPhone web site now states “Plans start at $59.99 and include Visual Voicemail, Unlimited Data (email and web), 200 SMS text messages and access to AT&T’s more than 17,000 Wi-Fi hotspots, including Starbucks* all for use in the U.S. *Wi-Fi available at U.S. company operated Starbucks locations equipped with a hotspot.” An AT&T representative had previously declined to comment on the appearance of the free Wi-Fi pages, but it now appears an official announcement on the service is imminent. Update: Following the publication of this news, AT&T removed all mention of the Wi-Fi service from the iPhone site.

They also list 71,000 hotspots, not 17,000.

Actually, the basic service is 17,000 hotspots. The 71,000 hotspots are included in the Premier services. Here is the link for the comparison chart:

So will this be added to to our current accounts or do we need to renew our agreement or something? I think this is great, as long as you don’t need to re-up.

Look under “Data Access”.
Is says, “In order to use data such as email, Google Maps, YouTube videos and web browsing, AT&T recommends using iPhone in a 3G or EDGE Network (coverage viewer), or from a local Wi-Fi connection.”

3G???

I went to Starbucks this morning and got that screen that locks you out… not the iPhone specific screen that gave me access a week or two ago.
