Intel exec: 2 iPhones at WWDC, larger one with Atom processor [updated]
By Charles Starrett | 05.14.08

Speaking at an Intel event in Munich, Intel Germany CEO Hannes Schwaderer has said that Apple will unveil two different iPhone devices (Translated link) at its Worldwide Developer Conference, according to ZDNet.de. One model is said to have a larger form factor, a 720x480 screen, and an Intel Atom chip as its main processor, while the other is reportedly similar in size to the current iPhone, but with 3G capabilities. Schwaderer said that the Atom-powered version of the iPhone would be larger not due to the chip’s size, but due to its use of the higher-resolution screen. Apple CEO Steve Jobs will make his keynote address to kick-off WWDC at 10:00 a.m. on June 9. [via Mac Rumors]

Update: Intel has issued a disclaimer (Translated link) regarding Schwaderer’s remarks, saying the CEO made “only general remarks about possible mobile Internet DEVICE (MIDs) and did not speculate upon future iPhone models,” adding that the iPhone was only mentioned as an example of such a device. Intel press spokesman Mike Cato told ZDNet.de, “Intel knows nothing about future products of other manufacturers and can therefore about it also nothing say.”

Isn’t it just wonderful that with all the different video formats, Apple continues to add to the confusion by introducing another device that will require yet ANOTHER variation of its .mp4 format that will not be compatible with all of their OTHER devices?

Someone please tell me, would it be hard for Apple to decide on ONE standard (e.g. Apple TV settings, whatever they are) and make their other devices compatible with it?

720X480 is DVD resolution. It won’t be that hard to convert video to that res.....

An iPhone Pro would be nice.

iPhone Pro would be nice, iPhone FREE would be nicer, still!

I’d like something with Newton Handwriting Recognition in it.

all I ask is a CDMA capable iphone… AT&T has a horrible network where I live. Iphone+Verizon=market domination. Well.. at least where I live lol

ecsacker6306: CDMA only works in USA, Canada, and S. Korea. GSM works all over the world. If you’re making one device for the world, which do you choose? GSM. (3G if you’re forward-thinking.)

Anyway, as with any pending Apple product, it’s all worthless speculation until the official announcement.

Hm…
Someone will be fired soon, i guess (for telling Apple secrets in public).

Well what I heard is that intel has been known to spill the beans so this sounds very likely. I now wish I’d waited to get my ipod touch! but hey, that’s the world of electronics. I’m guessing it’ll be a few months before an ipod version is released too but maybe not.

Anyways, I’m wondering if this thing is going to run a more advanced verison of the current iPhone OS-X. My understanding of the intel atom chip is that it was designed to run a full version of windows, but its actually too underpowered to do that, so OS-X would probably be perfect. But with apple’s current limitations of no programs running in the background, I think it may be a waste.
