MobileMe update expands iPhone 3GS video support, more
By Charles Starrett | 07.01.09

Apple has rolled out a new service update to its MobileMe paid service, adding support for several new iPhone and iPod touch features. Of particular interest to iPhone 3GS users, videos uploaded from the device can now be published to a Gallery album—if no albums exist, one is automatically created when uploading a photo or video. In addition, iPhone and iPod touch users now have the option to merge existing contacts and calendars upon initial sync with MobileMe, and to keep a copy of contact and calendar information on the device when deleting a MobileMe account or turning off syncing. Finally, iPhone contacts that sync with MobileMe now maintain ring tone associations across devices.

Strangely, the iPhone-related part of this service update is just a marketing sheet for the new features in iPhone OS 3.0, and has nothing to do with MobileMe itself.

Features like uploading videos, maintaining and merging existing contact and calendar information on the device and searching of Mail in the “cloud” are iPhone 3.0 features and not new MobileMe features. These have all been there since iPhone OS 3.0 came out on June 17th, and while MobileMe may have improved support for some of these features, others have nothing to do with MobileMe at all.

I find MobileMe still a mixed bag. I stopped syncing months ago due to lack of ring tone syncing (deleting) as this was a key feature of my mobile life (need to know if it’s wife or boss calling without looking at phone).

It’s now back to positive with ringtone syncing, but if I could sync with gmail, then the annual cost would not justify MobileMe.
