iLounge Wallpaper Contest - Winners Announced
By Dennis Lloyd | 02.21.07
image

This contest is now closed. Winners have been announced here. Congratulations and thank you to all who submitted entries! Everyone loves desktop background art (aka wallpaper): after years of submissions, we now have over 450 pieces of art in our Desktop/Wallpaper Art Gallery. Now we’re looking to expand it - and cover the latest and greatest iPod models. So we’re announcing our latest art contest: “Wallpaper Yourself an iPhone, Apple TV, or iPods.”

The rules are simple:

Other than the iLounge.com name and the image of the iPod, the work must be entirely your original creation, and created for this contest. Photographs and artwork are both acceptable, however, original art is strongly preferred. We’ll pick our three favorite pieces of wallpaper to win one of the following three prizes.

Grand Prize: One Apple iPhone* ($499, 4GB). We’ll help one lucky winner buy Apple’s combination cell phone, widescreen iPod, and Internet device - we’ll supply the funds for the iPhone; the cell phone contract is your responsibility.

Second Prize: One Apple TV ($299, 40GB). Enjoy iTunes-managed audio, video, and photo content on your widescreen TV with the new Apple TV device.

Third Prize: One iPod nano ($199, 4GB) and one iPod shuffle ($79, 1GB) in the winner’s choice of colors.

can we use the iPhone image?

By Rina on 02.21.07 at 01:23 PM

“Photographs and artwork are both acceptable, however, art is strongly preferred.”

What is the difference between “artwork” and “art”?

And also, does anyone know of a freeware app compatible wit Mac 10.2.8 for making a 1600x1200 desktop so I dont have to use the Finder’s picture taking feature?

By lilimacmike on 02.21.07 at 02:43 PM

Rina: Not for a valid contest entry, no.

lilimacmike: It’s the same thing.

By Jeremy Horwitz on 02.21.07 at 02:54 PM

Can we get a pictures anywhere… or where can we get them?

By musikmaniac17 on 02.21.07 at 05:29 PM

Sorry, take off the s in pictures

By musikmaniac17 on 02.21.07 at 05:30 PM

Hi there, is it okay if we just have ‘ilounge.com and not ‘ipodlounge.com’ ?

- Thanks

By Jenn on 02.21.07 at 05:39 PM

Please use iLounge.com.

By Dennis Lloyd on 02.21.07 at 05:45 PM

My image for the contest is only found in search, why isn’t it with the rest of the images.

By max on 02.21.07 at 08:00 PM

is it 1600X1200 is that mm or cm????

By jack on 02.22.07 at 09:21 AM

I love so many of the entries I’ve seen so far in the galleries and am really worried about being able to match them.
Interesting to see however that about 50% of the entries don’t fit the criteria of the comp by not using the specified iPods, the logo or being in the right format.
Maybe I’ll risk a flaming after all. grin
Seriously guys, read the rules!

By John Stanley on 02.22.07 at 09:24 AM

jack: That 1600X1200 is pixels. Even though the presence of a UK guy on the staff may suggest the possibility of inches. Or Euros.

By John Stanley on 02.22.07 at 09:26 AM

Isn’t the point of “wallpaper” that is should be used as a background for the desktop?  Isn’t this a Mac contest?  Then why why WHY specify 1600x1200 since NONE of the current Macs use this resolution, that is SOOOO PC centric.  Maybe you should pick a Mac Standard.  1920 x 1200 would be a good choice since that is the direction that a majority of the Mac displays are headed.  Bigger is always better anyhow, since almost universally images look better scaled DOWN rather than scaled UP.  I’m sadly disappointed in this contest.

By Ted Lowery on 02.22.07 at 10:25 AM

So where does one get a good version of the iLounge logo?

By drg on 02.22.07 at 02:15 PM

i only saw about 3 good ones in the whole bunch, the hullabaloo one on the first page, the music&intruments; orange one, and the by mark kempken. the rest either do not use the current model ipods or follow the instructions, the others are just plain ripoffs of other people’s work, unoriginal, or just plain bad.

By ryan smith on 02.22.07 at 03:10 PM

Yes, please provide us a vector file of the ilounge logo for use in this design…!

By Robert on 02.22.07 at 06:20 PM

this is going to sound really dumb… but does anyone know of some program or something i can use because i dont know how to make the background the 1600x1200 pixels…

By confused on 02.22.07 at 07:30 PM

Ted, um, no, this isn’t a Mac contest. It’s about iPods and iLounge, not computing platforms. Check the prizes - do you see a Mac-only device there?

By Pikemann_Urge on 02.23.07 at 01:22 AM

Hey Confused, Photoshop is the perfect puppy for the job.

By John Stanley on 02.23.07 at 02:53 AM

I can take part in the contest. I come from Spain, Europe. Thanks

By miguel on 02.23.07 at 04:28 AM

can we make a wallpapaer without the iLounge logo?
with only the text “iLounge”?

and can we draw an iPod? (rather than take a photo)

By Matrix on 02.23.07 at 07:15 AM

Some questions answered:

Please use iLounge.com name in your wallpaper/desktop. (iLounge logo is not necessary).

This is not a Mac-only contest. We went with one size to make it easy. 1600x1200 pixels.

The iLounge Wallpaper/Desktop Gallery has been around for years. You may be seeing some older entries from a past contest.

Yes. You can draw an iPod if you wish.

By Dennis Lloyd on 02.23.07 at 08:27 AM

i just have one question.  do you know the font that is used for ilounge, such as on your home page?
thank you.

Editor’s Note: The font is Myriad Pro.

By jammaj on 02.23.07 at 01:01 PM

I believe the font is Myriad Pro Semibold 27. Though that costs alot.

Also, check out my entry: http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/gallery/image_med/12590/

By Josh Kirklin on 02.23.07 at 01:45 PM

oh, and the color is #E16600

Editor’s Note: The orange color is #FF6600

By Josh Kirklin on 02.23.07 at 01:47 PM

The color of the ilounge is

#FF6600

By Henry on 02.23.07 at 04:17 PM

For European and international user: iPhone in debut will work only in Cingular-locked mode.. So, in Italy or other country it will be a beautiful gadget but it will not work!! In case of victory of international user, are you thinking about to give cash instead the prize?
Thanks!

By IL_MORUZ on 02.24.07 at 02:40 PM

so… we can’t use Apple’s wonderfully *hi-rez* photoshots, huh?

By drg on 02.24.07 at 06:08 PM

This contest is open to U.S. and international residents.

“Only those” or “those too”?

By blop on 02.25.07 at 10:23 AM

I hope incorrect submissions that were corrected with a re-submit will be cleaned up.  wink

Otherwise, thanks for the contest and good luck to anyone entering.  There are some nice submissions in the gallery already.

By Jason on 02.25.07 at 12:31 PM

Hello,
I went to enter submission, but I have no idea which section I should put my submission under.  Any help??

By Bee on 02.25.07 at 01:30 PM

@Bee - submit it under “iPod Desktop/Wallpaper Art Contest”

I look forward to seeing your entry. smile

By Jason on 02.25.07 at 02:18 PM

It’ll be done soon!  (with many variants)

By Bee on 02.25.07 at 03:10 PM

Is it legal to use apple’s ipod pictures is there gallery as an outline for something I will make?

By Bee on 02.25.07 at 03:17 PM

I am still waiting for a hi-res image of the iLounge logo. Please supply one for us to use. To keep everyone happy too, possibly supply images that work well for both Photoshop and Illustrator.

Thank you kindly,

T

By Tyler on 02.25.07 at 06:52 PM

Tyler…there is a link to the iLounge logo in two formats (png & ai (illustrator)) on this page…

http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/sitenews/comments/ilounges-5th-birthday-contest/

By franticnomad on 02.25.07 at 10:05 PM

whoops…i meant eps, not ai…but still illustrator.

By franticnomad on 02.25.07 at 10:06 PM

I’m using Photoshop, so can I create an iPod in Photoshop and use that. I’m confused about how it’s supposed to feature the iPods, yet we can’t use the pictures of one. Can we render them?

By ddsd on 02.27.07 at 08:50 PM

Thank you very much franticnomad, you rock!

T

By Tyler on 02.28.07 at 09:56 PM

I’ve never seen and iPod or edited grpahics. Can I win by just entering my name?

By creativ on 03.01.07 at 01:04 PM

So we CANNOT use pics found on apple.com? But i dont see that being stated anywhere under the Official Rules… because i already got two amazing wallpapers done with iPod pics from apple.com.

And this is just a tip for others, if you dont want others to create knockoffs of your artwork, submit them closer to the deadline.

By Nathan on 03.02.07 at 08:28 PM

“And this is just a tip for others, if you dont want others to create knockoffs of your artwork, submit them closer to the deadline. “

That’s exactly what I’m doing.

By DDSD on 03.03.07 at 12:13 AM

I’m sure the judges can appreciate originality over the knockoffs submitted afterward.  wink

I’ve just been submitting as I come up with ideas.  It helps me get creative, having this goal and I like seeing how many times each one has been viewed.  It gives me a sense of what’s attractive to someone’s eye.

By Jason on 03.03.07 at 11:29 AM

what is the maximum file size for the wallpapers?

By lilimacmike on 03.04.07 at 10:12 AM

“what is the maximum file size for the wallpapers?”

If you’re using software like Photoshop you can make your file size smaller by saving the image as a jpeg file and lowering the quality. This eliminates all of the data that stores your layers and effects and filters and saves it as one image. It’s smaller than a PSD file and easier to upload. I haven’t seen any uploader that accpets psd files. But that’s only if you’re using Photoshop.

By DDSD on 03.04.07 at 04:49 PM

I just registered to this site and I was wondering if there was a required amount of time you have to be registered before you can enter the contests because I like to use Photoshop and would like to enter.

By DPdouglas on 03.06.07 at 05:49 PM

You guys didn’t mention whether we are allowed to use stock photos and other non-original artwork in our compositions, thereby opening the way to intellectual theft, i.e. if I make a nice wallpaper that uses a photo of a landscape that I did not take, then it is not really completely my composition. Just a small detail, but I am already seeing people using third-party artworks, so I want to make sure this becomes resolved before the end of the contest.

By Scarf on 03.07.07 at 10:24 PM

Well I’m not gonna put any more entries in till the deadline, there is a total ripoff of a wall i submitted (Orangepod) and the one recently added iPodunderground. Now come on if you don’t have any ideas, don’t try and blatantly rip off others ideas. So to all entering do it at the end, or you may find an immitation posted.
Not angry, just disappointed.

By tri99er on 03.08.07 at 05:46 AM

honestly…it’s a catch 22.  you submit your artwork early, and potentially someone plays off of it, and produces something similar.  on the other hand, you wait and submit near the deadline and risk the chance of your idea already being submitted by someone else.  either way, i wouldn’t worry about it.  the judges know what was submitted when, and if it’s not truly given your own touch, I am sure that they will take that into consideration.  as for me…I just submit them when I think they are ready.  in the end it should be the best original designs that win anyway.  good luck to everyone!

By franticnomad on 03.08.07 at 10:28 PM

by the way, i meant to mention that if any of you liked my “iPod Rock” designs, I originally used this concept for a photoshop final class project.  This is what it looked like if you’re interested…

http://freud.franklin.edu/sharp11/dcom117h1ww/finalproject/

I thought it would be cool to modify it a little for this contest.

By franticnomad on 03.08.07 at 10:37 PM

are we alloud to use images off of other sites as long as we modify them as our own?

By emily on 03.09.07 at 02:53 PM

Can it have previous ipod models included or just the new ones.

By joey on 03.09.07 at 04:02 PM

I know you said the logo wasn’t necessary but can we use the logo in place for having ilounge.com? or do we need ilounge.com on their somehwere.

By alx1507 on 03.10.07 at 12:32 PM

tri99er - I suggest you get your facts right before calling entries like mine a ‘total ripoff’. I didn’t even know your entry existed (for I never flipped through the entries yet) before submitting mine. The idea probably is somewhat common, so I’d appreciate it if you don’t go around putting down others.

Don’t take this offensively, it’s just a matter of opinion.

All in all, good luck to everyone.

By Jenn on 03.10.07 at 08:10 PM

hello,  a lot is going on here that is common sense, which my question probably is too but scimming through the past posts i couldn’t get a definite answer on… are those ipods mentioned at the beginning the only ones we are allowed to use, and if so what are the sources we have to get a picture. Are we allowed to go to the apple website and use a picture off of their or do they have to be our own picture?

thank you for your time,
Zeb Whitt

By zeb on 03.10.07 at 10:55 PM

@Jenn - I would suggest Google Image Search.  There are some great promo photos on there that should be fine, since they are usually just straight on shots of the iPod.  Also, I’m not sure it would be fair to have this contest open to everyone, even if they don’t have an iPod of their own, if only personal photos were allowed.  I hope I’m right about this.  If you’re modifying a standard image enough, it should be fine.  wink

“Now we’re looking to expand it - and cover the latest and greatest iPod models.” - this should answer your other question.

By Jason on 03.11.07 at 07:36 AM

I meant to reply to zeb in the last post.  Sorry, Jenn. raspberry

By Jason on 03.11.07 at 07:38 AM

alright thanks a lot jason

By zeb on 03.11.07 at 05:42 PM

I have a quick question, I have included some small album art pictures onto my iPod image and border. Is that allowed?

By Nathan on 03.12.07 at 10:41 PM

Is there a limit to how many entries we can submit?

By DPdouglas on 03.17.07 at 06:20 AM

@DPDouglas - The official rules say:

“You may submit as many entries as you want.”

wink

By Jason on 03.17.07 at 12:40 PM

Hey, everyone i’ve just sent my entry, is call iPod Smile, hope u like, le tme know. thanz

By Rodrigo on 03.19.07 at 12:28 PM

can we draw something if we are bad at photoshop

By james on 03.19.07 at 01:37 PM

(I also sent an email about this, but time is running out)

After uploading my artwork, entering an email address, and then choosing a gallery, I discovered I chose the wrong gallery… Should I re-submit my artwork, or might you be able to trace the artwork? Of course, all three pieces are followed with my email address.

Thanks

By Duncan on 03.22.07 at 10:36 PM

hey..
so if we have at all used any of the images from apple.com our work is disqualified? ive created 6 or 7 really good ones and theyre just not valid?
theyre awfully modified, so is that ok? (in relation to jasons comment).

which leads to a debate.. because the copyright law says that if you copy something off someones site without asking first its infringing copyright law, even if the work isnt marked as copyright. the only way is if it is clearly stated as to be in the public domain. in which case, moost of the wallpapers submitted in this contest are already disqualified.

is this actually the case and most of the people submitting dont realise it?

By chris on 03.23.07 at 09:21 PM

What time are they due for those on EST?

By DPdouglas on 03.24.07 at 07:22 AM

I was just going to convert, but with changes in Daylight Savings Time, I’m a little confused.

By DPdouglas on 03.24.07 at 07:29 AM

“What if I take the person’s page and change it a little. Can I copyright it?

No. The changes must be ‘substantial and creative.’ In effect, there may be very, very little lingering remnants of the original work. You might as well write it from scratch before trying to steal and alter. Editorial changes will just not cut it in a court of law.”

This is from http://www.htmlgoodies.com/beyond/reference/article.php/3472671 and is in reference to copying whole web-pages.  I can imagine it would apply to images as well though, if you pull inspiration or dimensions from a reference image, how is that different from taking a picture of a real-world device and using it?

I’m not sure what I said before is correct since, after perusing the web and reading Google’s terms of service for image search, it covers itself by stating some images in its search might be copyrighted and are only intended to be viewed on your screen.

The problems come with the intentions of the wallpapers submitted and whether they will be viewed as generating income for this site.  Apple might never notice their images are being used this way and might not really care, as long as someone is not profiting from their intellectual property.  The law is tricky and copyright is there to protect the original holder from harm or potential harm in my understanding.  Perhaps half or more of the walls submitted WILL be disqualified.  I know at least half of my entries are not eligible under these restraints.  I guess we’ll have to wait and see.  As iLounge states above, they will modify the terms to comply with the laws of California.

By Jason on 03.24.07 at 08:02 AM

I rung up the guys at apple.com, they say using their images is, as they dont know the full extent of what these wallpapers are going to be used for, probably not a good idea.

They said you can legally take photos of your ipod, but if you really want a professional photo, find another site that has them, and request that sites permission to use the photos. That way if there are any copyright issues down the line, theyll be thrown right at the site you got the photos from.

Chances are, the site will tell you to get permission from apple. Dead end.

Best and safest way is to either draw it somehow without tracing (in photoshop, or with pen and paper) or to take photos of your own iPod.

Thats what the apple helpdesk guy said anyway.

By Chris on 03.24.07 at 06:27 PM

I’ve submitted all of my entries. Good luck to everyone. :<)

By DPdouglas on 03.24.07 at 10:45 PM

I submitted my images at 11:55, but they have still not shown up on the gallery page as of 12:10. are my images still entered?

By Yuto on 03.26.07 at 12:11 AM

the rules state “Other than the iLounge.com name and the image of the iPod, the work must be entirely your original creation, “

that means the image of the ipod can be a promo pic

By don711 on 03.26.07 at 07:02 AM

*drumroll* uuuuuh i can’t stand waiting smile

good luck everyone, some very nice entries!!!
