Deals On The Web reports Amazon.com is taking orders for iPod Minis in all colors at $231.44. Like most vendors, Amazon is reporting an “in stock soon” status. It is the lowest price we’ve seen to date, even if you will have to wait to get one. Ground shipping is Free.

Hitachi Ltd’s (Tokyo:6501.T - News) hard disk drive unit said on Sunday that it will spend about $200 million to double the disk drive output of its Thailand factory, including the 1-inch, 4-gigabyte disk drives that are found in the iPod Mini. [...]
In March, Cupertino, California-based Apple (NasdaqNM:AAPL - News) said it would delay global sales of the iPod Mini because it couldn’t get enough of the hard drives to meet U.S. demand, which had then surpassed supply through June. iPod Access allows you to transfer MP3 files from your iPod to your computer. When copying, you can keep the MP3s organized by artist/album. Full iPod backups can be achieved quickly and easily by deselecting the “Copy Over Originals” option when copying all songs.
The Mac Observer is reporting that This Week in Consumer Electronics (TWICE) magazine has ranked Apple 23rd out of a list of top 100 electronic retail chains - moving up from 34th.
“‘For the editors of TWICE, there is little doubt that the iPod was, and still is, a big factor in the sales growth of Apple’s retail stores.
“That’s quite a leap for Apple to 23rd spot,” Alan Wolf, a senior editor at TWICE, told The Mac Observer. ‘The iPod is a driving force behind this jump we believe, as well as the popularity of the iTunes Music Store. They have such a unique niche, sort of like Sony, where you find the brand everywhere and it transcends everything. OtterBox, makers of waterproof cases for PDAs has announced the oPod for 3rd generation iPods. The oPod case features an “interactive water resistant membrane,” access to the headphone port, buttons and touch wheel. There is no access to the “Hold” switch. We questioned OtterBox what could be accessed, and they replied with the following. “The case has full functionality to the keys [buttons and touch wheel] and the headphones can come out of the top of the case.
MacSkinz has released iPodSkinz, a hard plastic faceplate for all iPods and coming soon to the iPod mini. iPodSkinz feature access holes for scroll/touch wheels, and come in twenty-one printed designs - ranging from faux fur, alien heads to camouflage. MacSkinz also plans on releasing backplates in matching designs. iPodSkinz cost $20 and are available now for shipping.
