    “MP3.com backs Apple’s new iPod”

    Internet Magazine reports MP3.com Europe will be promoting its service to registered iPod owners by offering exclusive tracks.

    “‘With the launch of iTunes Music Store in the US and now the new iPod, Apple is leading the industry in the delivery of pay-per-track online music,’ said Leanne Sharman, VP of sales & marketing, MP3.com Europe. ‘This represents a resounding vote of confidence in our European marketing and distribution mechanism that they’ve chosen to market this exciting new product on our sites on the back of the successful campaign we ran for the company at the end of last year.’”

    Belkin Auto Kit for new iPod may not fit some cars

    pic MacFixit reports that Belkin’s soon to be released Auto Kit w/ Dock Connector for new iPod is too long for some car’s cigarette lighter power adapters.

    “Some Volkswagen models, and perhaps cars from other manufacturers, have too shallow a recession in the cigarette lighter to accommodate the Belkin adapter. Unfortunately, the Belkin is one of the only solutions available that includes a connector for the new proprietary FireWire/Power port on the new iPods. “

    PDASmart iPod battery replacement review

    iPodHacks has a review of PDASmart’s iPod battery replacement kit.

    “Using the plastic tools provided, I was able to pop open the iPod in about a minute, without any marring to the iPod itself. Once open, it was a matter of removing the old battery and simply replacing it with the new. Much more straightforward than I had pictured. Once in place, the iPod came alive (the battery happened to have a bit of charge to it as shipped), I popped the metal shell back in place, and plugged it in for a full charge. So far I’ve used it for most of a work-day in the office and it’s still at 4-ticks on the battery meter. Good as new. Wow - what a difference!”

    Dissecting iPod after slamming it in a car door

    Tom Robinson at Macteens.com has posted a photo tutorial on how to dissect your old iPod after having accidently slammed a car door on his iPod 5GB. He decided to take it apart and auction the parts on eBay, after which he received about $230 not including the damaged hard drive.

    “My iPod was dead; there was no doubt about it. The warranty had already expired so I decided to dissect it. I had previously taken the back cover off in order to sand the metallic casing for a brushed metal look, but I had never taken anything apart.”

    Daring Fireball vs. Knee-Jerk Critics

    John Gruber of Daring Fireball has weighed in on the iTunes Internet Sharing issue, offering a sound rebuttal to the several digital pundits levying criticism against Apple for disabling the feature in iTunes 4.01.

    “I think it was more of a social experiment. Rendezvous networking is built on top of IP networking, so once the programming work was done to support sharing locally, it was likely very little extra work to allow it to work between any two IP addresses. The potential for abuse was obvious, but so was the potential utility. And so I think Apple tried giving everyone the benefit of the doubt with iTunes 4.0’s sharing capabilities. “

    Dealmac: A reader notes that The Apple Store offers the factory-refurbished iPod 20GB for PC for $299 in its Special Deals section. Although we’ve seen new, factory-sealed units for $20 less than this, it’s the lowest price we know to be currently available for this discontinued iPod. Shipping is free, although sales tax is added where applicable. A one-year Apple warranty applies.

    AnandTech: Apple’s New iPod - Evolutionary, not Revolutionary

    AnandTech has posted a long (15 webpages) and comprehensive review of the iPod. MusicMatch, XPlay and iTunes 4 as well as taking the iPod apart are covered in the review.

    “With the original iPod, Apple had a clear winner on their hands with a revolutionary   new approach to portable MP3 players. The new iPod, albeit only an evolutionary   improvement over the old unit, continues to extend Apple’s dominance in this   sector.

    For current iPod owners, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to upgrade to   the new iPod, although the small size of the player is definitely tempting.  The functionality of the player remains virtually unchanged, which means you’ll   still probably want to hold on to your expensive investment.”

Becart adjusted its initial pricing, because the time required to manufacture one stand was more than originally anticipated. Note: the Becart iPod stand is made for 1st and 2nd generation iPods.

    Fox News: Will the Beatles Take a Bite of Apple Computer?

    Roger Friedman for Fox News reports that Apple may soon be sued by the Beatles over the iTunes Music Store.

    “Apple Computer’s Steve Jobs was such a Beatle fan that he named his company after the record label.

    But the Beatles, who are notoriously protective of their rights and quite litigious, weren’t so happy with Jobs. In 1981 they made him sign something agreeing never to go into the music business in order to keep a name they had trademarked. ...

    iPod Designer Awarded ‘Designer of the Year’

    Jonathan Ive, Apple’s industrial designer for the iPod and iMac has been awarded ‘Designer of the Year’ as reported by Charles Arthur, Technology Editor for the Independent.

    “The prestigious prize from the Design Museum in London is worth £25,000 for ‘the UK designer that made the biggest contribution to design in the past year’. Mr Ive, 36, who has been the vice-president of industrial design at Apple since 1998, received the prize after flying in from California, where he works at Apple’s head office in Cupertino.

    ‘Jonathan’s designs have touched millions of people’s lives and transformed the workplace,’ said the fashion designer Sir Paul Smith, who was on the judging panel.”

    NY Post: Apple, Amazon in Online Music Talks

    It seems that Amazon might soon be jumping on the iTunes Music Store band wagon. Tim Arango at the New York Post reports Apple and Amazon are negotiating a deal to make iTMS available on Amazon.com.

    “The parties are in advanced talks and a deal is expected, though sources warn that negotiations might still unravel.

    At Amazon’s annual meeting last week in Seattle, Jeff Bezos, the company’s chief executive officer, talked about opening a digital music store, telling reporters, ‘We’ve been looking at it for years.’”
