Update: Braving the cold to get an iPod mini

  • February 28, 2004
  • Apple,

Rajeev and Jeremy have reported with an update from the Grand Opening of Apple Store SF. Rajeev described the opening as ‘hectic’ as hundreds of people swarmed the front entrance while San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, former Mayor Willie Brown, and Apple CEO Steve Jobs cut the ceremonial ribbon for the opening at 10 am PT. Apple sold 200 $259 grab bags marked ‘Do you feel lucky?’ containing; Apple Airport Extreme Base Station, Bluetooth adapter, Apple Wireless Keyboard, Apple Wireless Mouse, .Mac account, Keynote (presentation software), iLife ‘04 and a 10% gift card. In addition, some (1 in 6) lucky individuals also received Silver iPod minis and 15GB iPods, but one lucky person got a 40GB iPod. Both Rajeev and Jeremy got an iPod mini in their bags.

A couple of hardcore Apple fans are enduring the cold San Francisco night as they camp out in front of the new Apple Store San Francisco to be the first 200 people to be able to purchase a $259 grab bag valued at $600 - some containing iPod minis. Two San Jose State Apple Campus Reps, Rajeev and Jeremy sent us an email describing the situatuion as they await the Grand Opening at 10 am Saturday morning.

“My name is Rajeev B. and I’m sitting here with my partner Jeremy C…. we are both SJSU Apple Campus Reps and we have been out here since 1:30 pm PT today.  It’s getting cold but we have been sitting bundled up.  The line is about 30 or so people and it’s currently 7:49 pm.  There is a guy with an iSight broadcasting a live feed that updates every 2 minutes at ifoapplestore.com. So far everything seems cool. The lights inside the store have gone off for the night but everybody here is really nice and friendly and and we’re all helping out each other and waiting for our chance at the 200 grab bags that are going be available at store opening at 10 am.  These bags are valued at over $600… and some will contain an iPod mini.”

Mac: iPod mini will not work as bootable drive

Chris Breen, Macworld columnist reports that “if you attempt to install [Mac OS X] from a multi-disc CD set, the mini won’t boot so that you can install from the second disc. If you install from a DVD, the installation goes as planned, but when it comes time to boot, the mini is missing in action—won’t appear in the Mac’s startup screen when you hold down the Option key.”

iPod mini is “outdoing the success of the original iPod”

“Early indications are that iPod mini, which garnered more than 100,000 preorders since being announced in January, is outdoing the success of the original iPod, which sold 125,000 units in its first quarter of availability, Apple said.

‘The customer response has been incredible—it’s just been off the charts,’ Apple worldwide iPod marketing manager Danika Cleary told TechNewsWorld. ‘It’s meeting and exceeding our expectations.’”

Apple Store SF to offer “lucky bags” at grand opening

“To celebrate the grand opening of Apple Computer’s new Union Square store in San Francisco, 200 shoppers will be given a dubious opportunity—spend $250 for the chance to win a new iPod mini.

On Saturday morning, the first few hundred people through the door will have a chance to buy a $250 “lucky bag,” which may or may not contain one of the company’s popular, just-released miniature music players. [...]

Priced at $250, nearly the same price as the iPod mini itself, the lucky bags contain seven or eight items worth a total of $600 to $1,000, Johnson [Apple senior vice president of retail] said.”

New audio book website Telltale Weekly launched

New Mac-based audiobook provider Telltale Weekly launches with DRM-free audiobooks for under a dollar. New unabridged audiobooks will be released every Friday in MP3 and Ogg Vorbis formats. The site uses the Bitpass micropayment solution to offer recordings for as little as 25 cents and still be able to fairly compensate artists. All recordings from Telltale Weekly are DRM-free, so users may use the files on an unlimited number of computers, CD-Rs, and players for personal use.

Many of the current and future recordings offered by Telltale Weekly are of performances of texts in the public domain. These are produced with the intention of releasing them under the Creative Commons Attribution License five years or 100,000 sales after their first appearance on the site, whichever comes first. Every purchase helps to build and fund a free audiobook library, and Telltale Weekly hopes to create at least 50 such recordings each year.

iPod plugin for Winamp 5 released

“With the release of the iPod Support Plug-in for Winamp 5 you can finally start using that PC formatted iPod for something other than a stylish paper weight.

Installing the plug-in will add an iPod device listing to your Winamp Media Library. Then all you have to do is connect your iPod to your PC, point Winamp to the drive letter that your iPod was assigned, and start sending your MP3 or M4A tracks from your PC to your hip little portable device. Winamp will also play tracks directly from your iPod so you can take your collection to a friends house and blast your tunes in style without ever having to touch his/her dirty dirty hard drive. You can even free up space of your own hard drive by deleting useless programs like iTunes and Music Match.

Will the overt sexiness of Nullsoft innovation ever end? No. No it won’t.”
