Apple preparing AirPort Express revision

Apple is preparing a revised version of its AirPort Express 802.11n base station, according to a new report. Citing a person familiar with the matter, AppleInsider reports that the current model is out-of-stock or otherwise listed as discontinued at some third-party retailers, and that AirPort Utility—currently in development—specifically lists “Adds support for the AirPort Express 802.11n (2nd Generation) base station” in its release notes. Apple updated the rest of its AirPort family in June, boosting the devices’ signals and improving performance, especially at long distances. Apart from serving as a portable 802.11n base station, the AirPort Express also serves as an AirPlay audio client thanks to its integrated audio output port.
JBL rolls out OnBeat Xtreme, Air speaker systems

JBL has rolled out its new OnBeat Xtreme and OnBeat Air speaker systems for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod. As explained on the company’s website, the OnBeat Xtreme features a rotating dock with support for the iPad, JBL Ridge tweeters and Atlas woofers, computer optimized DSP equalization, Bluetooth for wireless audio playback, and the ability to charge the docked device. It is available for pre-order and sells for $499. The OnBeat Air was shown at the recent IFA electronics show in Germany, and, according to What Hi-Fi, will also feature a rotating, iPad-friendly dock, built-in Wi-Fi for AirPlay support, and either a white or black finish. It is expected to ship next month and sell for £200, or roughly $315. [via iPod Republic]

Pioneer unveils AirPlay-enabled Music Tap systems

Pioneer has unveiled its new AirPlay-enabled Music Tap sound systems. Available in Pioneer and Elite branded models, these systems feature built-in Wi-Fi for AirPlay, DNLA connectivity, vTuner Internet radio, compatibility with Pioneer’s free AirJam app for iOS on the software side. Interesting hardware features include a 2.5-inch LCD display, a two-channel digital amplifier and dual full-range drivers, an integrated pop-out iPod and iPhone dock for playback and charging, an auxiliary input for connecting other audio devices, a USB port for added connectivity, and the ability to display song information and album art on a connected monitor or TV. Pioneer’s new Pioneer and Elite Music Tap sound systems will be available this October and will sell for $400 and $479, respectively.
Ballistic ships Ballistic LS case for iPhone 4

Ballistic has announced that it is now shipping its Ballistic LS case for the iPhone 4. Previewed by iLounge in December 2010, the Ballistic LS is made from TPU material, and features four interchangeable silicone “Ballistic Corners,” which vary in color and thickness to allow for a customized level of drop protection, as well as push-through protection for the volume and sleep/wake buttons, compatibility with both GSM and CDMA models, and open access to all other ports, controls, and cameras. The Ballistic LS case for iPhone 4 is available now in translucent gray or translucent blue and sells for $30.
NuForce rolls out Icon iDo DAC for iOS

NuForce has rolled out its new Icon iDo digital audio converter (DAC) and headphone amplifier for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. The iDo is designed to greatly improve the quality of audio being delivered from the device—especially in the case of Apple Lossless files—by bypassing the device’s built-in DAC and extracting the audio data in its original digital form. It requires a 30-pin connection to the device, as well as a power connection for its own power supply, and gives users the choice of connecting the iDo to a home stereo system using RCA analog or coaxial digital output or listening via headphones connected directly to the device. In addition, as it offers its own headphone amplifier, it is capable of properly driving more power-hungry headsets than the device alone. NuForce’s Icon iDo is available now and sells for $249.

Dexim has introduced its new AppSpeed Monster Truck for iOS devices. The Monster Truck is a radio-controlled (RC) vehicle that comes with a small 30-pin RF dongle to allow for control of the toy via a specialized app. Users have the ability to control the truck using touchscreen controls or via the device’s accelerometer; additional features include three pre-set modes to have the truck zigzag, spin, or dance to music, an included quick-charging battery pack with USB charging cable, and the ability to control the truck from up to 50 feet away. Zero1.tv has announced its new VooMote Zapper accessory for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The Zapper is a small, dock-connecting universal remote featuring a colorful body and four built-in IR transmitters to allow for operation in a variety of positions. It works in conjunction with the company’s VooMote Zapper app, which offers an IR code database of “hundreds of thousands” of electronic devices, the ability to customize the remote layout, macro capabilities, and a graphical programming guide. The VooMote Zapper will be available in 11 Smart Cover-matching colors and will be available in October for $70; matching cases for the iPad 2, iPhone 4, and fourth-generation iPod touch will also be offered.

XtremeMac has rolled out three new speaker systems for the iPod, iPhone, and iPad. The Luna Voyager II is a low-profile, dual-alarm FM clock radio featuring a top-mounted, iPad-compatible dock and an orange front display. It is joined in the new lineup by the Soma Stand, a portable speaker system featuring a folding design, dual ported speaker legs, the ability to run off AC power or batteries, and a mid-mounted, iPad-compatible dock, and the Soma Travel, a small portable speaker system with a retractable, iPad-compatible dock, swing out legs for stability, and the ability to run off power supplied by the docked device. All three of XtremeMac’s new speakers will be available next month; pricing has yet to be announced.

iHome today announced that its long-awaited iW1 AirPlay speaker system will be available for purchase starting September 26. Yantouch debuts Black Diamond 2 dock for iPhone

Yantouch has debuted its new Black Diamond 2 dock for the iPhone. The Black Diamond 2 is a unique “3D” dock which uses the iPhone’s screen to illuminate the inside of its translucent plastic body, creating different lighting effects. Unlike the original Black Diamond, the Black Diamond 2 offers the ability to function as a standalone, USB-powered light, and also offers modest amplification—8dB, the company claims—of the audio output from the iPhone’s speaker, as well as the ability to function as a speaker phone. It also offers the ability to charge the iPhone when docked, and works with an updated version of the company’s Black Diamond app, which offers new features such as a sleep and wake timer, a missed call reminder, and a “poke” control to change lighting effects and music playing back through the app. Pricing and availability for the Black Diamond 2 has yet to be announced.
Scosche announces RDTX-PRO for iPhone, iPod touch

Scosche has announced its new RDTX-PRO radiation detector for the iPhone and iPod touch. The RDTX-PRO is a dock-connecting accessory that works in conjunction with the company’s free radTEST app to accurately detect gamma radiation above 60keV within +/- 5% accuracy, with a consumer-friendly green (safe)/ yellow (elevated) / red (dangerous) display. The RDTX-PRO can also be used on its own as a radiation alarm. Scosche’s RDTX-PRO will be available in September from Synexx in Tokyo, Japan and will sell for $330; $10 of each purchase will be donated to a group of charities committed to aiding those affected by the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.

Stem Innovation has debuted its new iZon Remote Room Monitor. The iZon is an audio and video capable room monitor that works in conjunction with the company’s Stem:Connect app to allow streaming of live video and audio to an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. According to the company, setup takes ten minutes or less, and features include the ability to stream via Wi-Fi, 3G, or EDGE anywhere there’s connectivity, audio and noise detection with the ability to receive push notifications when movement is detected, and the ability to record video directly to YouTube. Stem Innovation’s iZon Remote Room Monitor is available now and sells for $130.

Nikon today introduced a number of new Coolpix compact cameras, including the S1200pj, which offers compatibility with iOS devices. Sporting a 14.1-megapixel sensor, 5x optical zoom, 720p HD movie capture, and a three-inch LCD screen, the S1200pj’s signature feature is an integrated 20-lumen projector. The projector is capable of projecting an image up to 60-inches wide, and offers compatibility with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch to allow users to project images, movies, and online content from their devices. Nikon’s new Coolpix S1200pj will be available in mid-September and will sell for $430.
