Sumajin Announces Smartwrap Headphone Cord Manager

picSmartwrap, winner of ID magazine’s Design Distinction award, is a cord manager for headphone cables designed and developed by Sumajin, an industrial design firm in Singapore. You snap the cord into place at one of two places then wrap and snap into place again. Smartwraps come in seven colors and are produced in limited quantities. Sumajin is now accepting orders via email as they get their online ordering system ready. Each Smartwrap is $5 plus $5 shipping and takes up to 14 days to arrive. Sumajin also makes the fun and playful Flex Champion, a small gadget in the shape a person flexing its muscles overhead. Economic Analysis:  iTunes/iPod vs. RIAA/CD Retail Distribution

I’m currently working on my MBA and was required to do an economic analysis of a product lifecycle.  Being a new iPod/iTunes convert, I decided to talk about how Apple has taken on the old RIAA/CD retail distribution model.  This website has been a great source of information for me and I would like to share my analysis with the group. This posting does not represent the view of my employer.

What if Apple paid you in music to rate your own tracks?

Not really news, more of a what if?  Some iPod users have discovered the power of Smart Playlists (a peek at smartplaylists.com gives users some great ideas). What if Apple were to pay users to rate their songs, so that info could be uploaded to the iTunes store to make recommendations more accurate?

Macworld UK: Mixed outlooks for iPod, iTunes

“However, music-industry executives believe Apple will face fierce competition from established heavyweights in the digital-music download market.

MusicNet CEO Alan McGlade told CBS MarketWatch he thinks Apple’s service may be an early leader, but that others will dominate the new market in future.

He said: ‘The big companies are going to dominate. AOL is going to be a significant player. Companies like Yahoo, MTV, Microsoft, Sony. I don’t think it’s going to be iTunes.’”

The famous ‘For Dummies’ line of books is now offering iPod & iTunes For Dummies by Tony Bove and Cheryl Rhodes priced at $11.89 at Amazon.com. Also new is the iPod Companion book by Tony Bove priced at $17.49.

AP: Music labels tapping illegal song-swapping to glean trends

“Despite their legal blitzkrieg to stop online song-swapping, many music labels are benefiting from—and paying for—intelligence on the latest trends in Internet trading. [...]

One company, Beverly Hills-based BigChampagne, began mining such data from popular peer-to-peer networks in 2000 and has built a thriving business selling it to recording labels. [...]

BigChampagne has certainly done well by file-swapping. It formed in July 2000, just as the Internet boom was beginning to bust, and now counts Maverick, DreamWorks, Warner Bros., Disney and Atlantic Records among its clients. Feinstein proposes illegal recording as a federal offense

“Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California moved Thursday to protect increasingly beleaguered movie and music producers and artists by proposing a new federal crackdown on pirates, especially those who use the Internet to distribute their goods. [...]

The Feinstein-Cornyn proposal would make illegal recording a federal felony, with a maximum punishment of five years in prison, an unspecified fine, or both. The maximum prison time increases to 10 years for a second offense.”

Apple Launches iPodRocks.com

Apple has launched a special holiday shopping site for iPod featuring several animations of the iPod, and sections include What’s an iPod?, How does it work?, Convince your parents and Where to buy. The Convince your parents section is particulalry humorus as Apple lists several ways for you to ask your parents for an iPod; Ask nicely, Stake your grades on it, Do a good deed and Subliminal advertising.

A new iPod commercial featuring ‘Rock Star’ by N.E.R.D was aired tonight on primetime NBC, and is the third iPod commercial featuring silhouetted people dancing against colored backgrounds. This one also mentions ‘Now for Windows’ and ends with iTunes.com.
