Jobs hopes iTMS for Europe early 2004

  • September 19, 2003
  • Apple

In a MacNN reader report, Steve Jobs was interviewed on the French TV show during the Apple Expo in Paris.

When will you bring the iTMS to Europe? First priority for us is to make it available to Windows users in the USA and this will happen before the end of the year! But, we are really commited to bringing iTMS to Europe as soon as ... yesterday if we could ... but the European music licensing market is very complicated. A song might be distributed by one company in the UK and a different one in France, and then another one in Germany! So we have been trying to sort thru all of that for several months already and .. we hope that early next year we will be able to offer iTMS to European users, both MAC and Windows!”

TIME: How to Go Legit

“The problem so far with the pay-per-song model from a business perspective is profits — or the lack thereof. With as much as 70% of each sale going to the record label and the rest eaten up by surprisingly high costs for things like infrastructure and credit-card fees, sales volume must but doesn’t yet compensate.  “It’s not a way to make a lot of money,” acknowledges Jobs. No, it’s a way to help sell iPods. Apple says sales of the music-storing, high-profit-margin palm-size gadgets almost quadrupled between the quarters before and after iTunes’ launch.”

  • iPod

A UK night club in East London called dreambagsjaguarshoes is featuring a vinyl-free ‘noWax’ club night using iPods. Club goers are encouraged to bring their iPods to join in the mix.

“The concept for noWax is simple: bring down your iPod, take a ticket and wait in line. When an automated projector above the DJ booth flashes your number, it’s time to plug-n-play three songs alternatively against another budding iPod mixmaster. The winner will be decided by the audience response,. If they think you’re really terrible before you’ve finished - you’re off!”

iTMS Shutdown to prepare for iTunes for Windows?

I was heading over to the iPod discussions on Apple.com, and I noticed this header in bold:

“The iTunes Music Store will be unavailable on Sunday, September 21, 2003 from Midnight to approximately 2:30AM Pacific Daylight Time. Please plan to visit the iTunes Music Store either before or after this temporary outage.”

This is just pure speculation, but it is encouraging. Hopefully, the shutdown is for a server upgrade or something.  You know, to upgrade their hardware in preparation for a massive spike in visits…?  With recent reports pegging the release of iTunes for Windows as sometime in October, it looks like Apple is finally going to give all us Windows iPod users a present soon.

Reuters: iTunes Music Store Europe next year & iTunes Windows update

“‘We’re clearly working on it (but) I think we’ll do it next year,’ he told journalists on the fringes of the annual Apple Expo in Paris. He said it took time to sort out distribution rights with the music publishers who own the songs.

Jobs reiterated that, before the end of the year, Apple would bring iTunes and the online music store which has sold 10 million songs since its launch four months ago, to owners of personal computers that run on Microsoft’s Windows operating system.

‘We’re very much on track to execute iTunes for Windows,’  he said.”

NEWSWEEK: Apple moves up iTunes for PC to mid-October

“In another hopeful sign for the industry last week, downloading sites Rhapsody and Apple’s iTunes bragged that paying customers were flocking their way. And Apple, NEWSWEEK learned, quietly informed some music insiders that it’s moved up the date for expanding its current Mac-only iTunes for the vast universe of Windows-based PCs to mid-October. Apple couldn’t be reached for comment. As weeks go, it was a good one for the record industry.”
