“Apple’s iTunes service does use DRM technology—for example, users may not e-mail downloaded music files to one another, although they may burn unlimited copies of files to CDs. Still, the company’s approach is far less restrictive than that of its competitors. Many of those rivals charge monthly subscription fees, restrict the number of times a downloaded file can be burned to CD, or make downloaded files inaccessible if a user’s subscription expires. Apple does none of those things.”

RollingStone.com: Chris Rock spoofs Apple iPod commercials

Chris Rock, host of this year’s twentieth MTV Video Music Awards will be spoofing the Apple iPod commercials while singing an a capella version of Justin Timerblake’s ‘Cry Me a River’ in front of a white background as part of several promo ads for the VMA. The RollingStones interview asked Chris Rock if he owns an iPod and he replied, “I got a music iPod and a comedy iPod. One is all comedy and spoken word, every speech, Kennedy, Martin Luther King, whatever.” The VMA commercials are currently airing on MTV, and the show premieres live on August 28 at 8 p.m. ET.

Vaja announces new European distributor

“It’s still difficult to tell how much iTunes will boost Apple’s profits. But Charles Wolf, an analyst at Needham and Co., likes the early signs. For example, in the previous quarter Apple sold 304,000 iPods, up from Street estimates of 75,000. Wolf estimates iPods could account for $274 million in revenue in fiscal 2003, or 5% of sales. Apple’s iTunes service should also be helped by a new version of iTunes for Windows users, which should be available later in the year.”

“‘Although the [Digital Millennium Copyright Act] sets forth the minimum requirements for seeking a subpoena, RIAA is not seeking a subpoena as to everyone who is illegally distributing copyrighted recordings,’ the letter said. ‘Rather, at this time, RIAA is focusing on egregious infringers, those who are engaging in substantial amounts of illegal activity.’

An RIAA spokesperson could not quantify what the group means by ‘substantial amounts,’ but the group called its response ‘proportionate to the scope of a pervasive piracy problem today.’”

Apple has posted/updated an AppleCare Knowledge Base Document: The MUSICMATCH Jukebox can incorrectly report that the iPod is still in the process of synchronizing, even when the iPod has completely synchronized.

Griffin iTrip for 3G iPod to ship early September

iLounger ‘jasonmccabe’ has informed fellow iPodders that the new iTrip for 3G iPods is expected to ship in early September according to an email from Jack C., Tech Support for Griffin Technology.

“It was scheduled for release on July 21 but we have had to delay that for a few more weeks. We hope to release it in early September. We’re sorry for the delay - but it WILL be worth it.”

No Electricity?  No problem… iPod to the rescue!

By now, many of you may be aware of the huge power outage that occured throughout Ontario and most of the North East U.S.  As I returned home last night to my unpowered apartment, I was greeted by a short 4 story climb in pitch black stairwells.  Not too bad for me, but for an elderly couple, one of whome was on an oxygen machine, and carrying luggage, it could have been life threatening.  So after sitting for a few minutes to review the situation and ensuring that I would help with these bags, I whipped out my iPod, turned on the backlight.. and voila!  Light for everyone.

Needless to say, all were impressed, and the cool blue glow adequately lit the darkened stairwell enough for everyone to get where they were going without a problem.  Not to mention easily over 8 hours of play time later that evening in an otherwise electricity free zone.  Thank’s Apple, you may have saved a life.
