Update: RemoteRemote conflicts with iPod firmware 2.1

Engineered Audio emailed us the following:

“We’ve been working on this (between last night and this morning) (several electrical engineers…) and are now convinced that this is an issue specifically related to version 2.1.

We have a number of iPods here (15 or so) and have various versions of firmware 2.0, 2.0.1, 2.0.2, and 2.1 ... and all the failures here are only related to 2.1 ... go figure!”

Engineered Audio has issued a statement regarding the RemoteRemote wireless remote for 3G iPods. It seems that users with iPods updated to firmware 2.1 are experiencing problems controling the iPod via the receiver unit. At this time, shipping of the RemoteRemote has ceased until they fix the problem. (click ‘Read more’ for the full statement)

“This issue is not fully understood at this point, however, those customers that have updated their iPod to firmware version 2.1 will most likely suffer this failure. We have anecdotal evidence that iPod firmware versions 2.0 and 2.0.1 work. The working theory right now is that this is a timing (or structure) problem with the serial data that the receiver sends to the iPod.”

$60 Sony iPod Killer? Not Likely.

  • November 5, 2003

The Register has posted an interesting article with regards to the likelihood of Sony releasing an iPod killer anywhere in the vicinity of $60…

“Sony will take Apple head on next year with the launch of new portable music players that pitch directly against the Mac maker’s iPod.

So much the consumer electronics giant admitted at its Transformation 60 conference yesterday. But early reports that it will do so with a $60 device seem highly unlikely, unless Sony has managed to rewrite the rulebook of hard drive economics.

  • iPod,

“Officials of the world’s largest consumer electronics maker also said Sony would launch a rival to Apple Computer’s iPod digital music player next year for as little as $60.

‘PSP will be the Walkman of the future,’ Ken Kutaragi, Sony’s executive deputy president and head of its gaming business, said in comparing a PSP prototype to Sony’s highly successful earlier generation of music players.

PSP is designed to rival Nintendo’s Game Boy handheld game player, mobile phone maker Nokia’s N-Gage wireless gaming device, and Apple’s iPod and iTunes music download service.”

Editor’s note: ZDNet Japan has published specifications of the upcoming PSP player, Apple-x.net has published a story and specs and 1up.com has an image of the first PSP concept model.
