iPod continues to be dominant player among teens

Apple’s iPod continues to dominate market share and mindshare among teenagers. According to Piper Jaffray’s semi-annual digital music teen survey, 77% of students who own an MP3 player have an iPod, up from 74% last Fall. For online music services, 71% of teens said they use iTunes, up from 64% last Fall. “While it is not at all surprising to see that Apple still has leading market share in digital audio players and online music, we are surprised that Apple has actually grown its market share in both digital audio players and music download services since the Fall-05 PJC teen survey was completed,” Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster wrote in a report given to iLounge.

Merriam-Webster references to be released for iPod

iPREPpress and Merriam-Webster have announced a series of portable text references for the iPod. The first title, Merriam Webster’s Pocket Dictionary for iPod, is available today for $10. The downloadable dictionary includes 40,000 words and their definitions, a pronunciation guide, abbreviation guide, and a Handbook of Style. Over the next two months, the two companies will release Merriam-Webster’s Pocket Thesaurus, Merriam-Webster’s Rhyming Dictionary for song and hip-hop writers, Merriam-Webster’s Pocket Atlas, and The Merriam-Webster Dictionary of Quotations.

Apple lawyer gives closing arguments, defends right to logo

During his closing arguments in the Apple vs. Apple case today, Apple Computer lawyer Anthony Grabiner defended the company’s right to use its logo on the iTunes Music Store and in ads for the service. Grabiner said ads featuring U2, Eminem and Coldplay were entitled to use the Apple logo because they were promoting the iTunes store and not the music itself. “Viewers aren’t ignorant people, but… have significant understanding of what Apple Computer does and the object of the exercise, accepted by people watching, was to get the benefit of the download,” Grabiner said. “Apple Computer has the exclusive right to use the apple mark on such a broadcast, if used to indicate the source or origin of the hardware and downloading services mentioned in the advert.”

Apple today introduced Boot Camp, new software that enables Intel-based Macs to run Windows XP. The free beta software is available today for download and will be a feature in “Leopard,” Apple’s next major version of Mac OS X.

SearchForiPod.com is a “free online video download community that aggregates and organizes iPod-formatted video content from over 1,000 independent sources and makes it searchable through various content channels and traditional keyword search.”

WaterField intros iPod Hi-Fi case

WaterField Bags has announced the first travel case for Apple’s iPod Hi-Fi. The $149 case features padded nylon construction, play-though functionality, plastic speaker protection, shoulder strap, and five exterior pockets. “To play, just tuck the front flap into rear of the case behind the speaker, plug in the power cord, and drop in your iPod,” says WaterField. The iPod Hi-Fi Speaker Case will ship on April 18th.

Atakan Cetinsoy, the former business intelligence manager of the iTunes Music Store, has joined MusicStrands, a company that develops music recommendation software.

According to a survey by M:Metrics, owners of portable music devices, especially iPod owners, are “more than twice more likely than average mobile subscribers to use music and video applications on their mobile phone and to express a willingness to pay for such services in the future.”

 

Dave Matthews Band catalog now available on iTunes

Apple today announced the availability of the entire Dave Matthews Band catalog on the iTunes Music Store. “For the first time ever online, fans of Dave Matthews Band can purchase and download individual songs from the band’s catalog for just 99 cents per song exclusively from iTunes,” Apple said in a statement. Previously, the band’s “Stand Up” was the only album offered in digital form.

Apple offers Chili Peppers pre-order, limited-edition iPod

Apple and Warner Bros. Records today announced that the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ new double album “Stadium Arcadium” will be offered through an exclusive pre-sale on the iTunes Music Store. Customers can pre-order the album from iTunes for $19.90 to be downloaded on May 9 when it is released. In addition, those who pre-order the album will be entered to win a limited-edition Chili Peppers iPod and get the first shot at concert tickets for the band’s North American tour.

Apple vs. Apple: iTunes exec takes witness stand

Eddie Cue, vice president of iTunes at Apple Computer, took the witness stand Monday to defend his company in the trademark lawsuit brought on by The Beatles’ Apple Corps. Cue testified that Apple Computer did not violate a 1991 agreement between the two companies by using the Apple logo on the iTunes Music Store. Apple Corps lawyer Geoffrey Vos asked Cue to confirm that the iTunes Music Store had offered exclusive songs from artists such as U2 and Bob Dylan. “We have tracks that are temporarily exclusive to us in the Music Store, and so do most of the other services,” Cue said in the High Court in London. James Hoffman, CEO of Woodstock Systems, testified earlier on behalf of Apple Corps that Apple Computer converts its music files into a proprietary format to restrict how they are used.

Hollywood studios now selling downloadable movies online

Today, six of the major studios began selling downloadable full-length movies online through the Movielink service, which is owned by Warner Brothers, Sony Pictures, Universal, MGM, and Paramount. Until today, only rentable downloads had been offered by the studios, which could be watched only during a 24-hour window. The movie files will take up around a gigabyte of storage, and will take an hour or two to download, depending on the internet connection.

Nyko Sound Stage speaker system introduced

Nyko has officially introduced the Sound Stage speaker system for Apple’s iPod nano, first shown (and photographed) at CES in January. The compact unit features stereo sound with high and mid range speakers, an acrylic and brushed aluminum exterior, a 9-button remote, a pass through dock connector, and a headphone jack and line in. “Get a big sound out of your small iPod nano without taking up a lot of space,” says Nyko. “The Sound Stage for iPod nano combines crisp stereo sound, amplified bass and the charging/transfer features of a docking station. Stereo Speakers with Maxx Base Boost provide quite an audio punch while listening to your favorite tunes.” [via Gizmodo]

Command-Tab has created an interactive tool that provides iPod button combinations for performing Hard Reset, Diagnostic Mode and Disk Mode functions on first through fifth-generation models.

iLounge adopts subscription model, establishes hourly Q&A fee

Bowing to industry pressures and hoping to boost income from its widely-read iPod and iTunes web site, iLounge.com has announced substantial changes to its free content offerings, refocusing heavily on revenue-generating measures. Effective 9:00PM PST today, April 1, thousands of previously free pages on iLounge.com will be locked, and made available only on a pay-per-page or monthly subscription basis. “Having watched the experts at Napster and RealNetworks practically mint their own money with similar plans,” explained Jeremy Horwitz, Editor-in-Chief of iLounge, “we decided to bet the company on a similarly great idea. Soon, users will be able to unlock the site with individual ‘iLounge Keys,’ sold for 99 cents per page, or monthly ‘iLounge Gold’ site-wide access for only $12.95. Everyone else is trying to sell something to Apple fans, so why not us?”

“Too many times, we’ve passed up opportunities to make an easy buck,” said Dennis Lloyd, Publisher of iLounge, “so starting now, we’re going to change that.” In addition to starting an all-nude version of its popular iPods Around the World photo galleries, the site will begin to publish reviews written by accessory and service providers, and open its Discussion Forums to endless quantities of viral advertising and astroturfing. Lloyd also disclosed that Ask iLounge, the site’s weekly Q&A column, would be cancelled in favor of ‘iPod Buddies,’ a $65/hour consulting service where iLounge editors or high school students (as available) will offer in-person or telephone iTunes assistance and music recommendations to needy readers. “We think that these changes will ultimately benefit both us and our readers,” said Lloyd and Horwitz, “and if they don’t, at least we’ll be able to enjoy the nude photo galleries.”
