Mix: Air Guitar, Infinite Loop, Tardis Case, Loop Nano

A pair of developers in San Francisco is seeking funding for the Air Guitar Move, a new accessory for the iPhone and iPod touch. The accessory, available for a pledge of $39 or more, will connect via the 30-pin port and will use motion sensing technology to integrate with an app and enable the user to “play” guitar, with the device serving as the guitar neck. The Air Guitar Move’s Kickstarter project has surpassed its funding goal, but is still accepting pledges until July 10.

Designer and engineer Tim Gushue is seeking funding for the InfiniteLoop and miniLoop, new stands designed to work with the iPad/tablets and iPhone/smartphones, respectively. Measuring four feet in length, the InfiniteLoop is able to coil into a small circle, and expands to form a curved stand, with a front “foot” providing support for the bottom of the iPad, while suction cups and or side clips help to hold the device in place. The miniLoop is a two-foot version of the same concept, with a single suction cup cap and clip. Pledges of $19 or more serve as a pre-order for the miniLoop, pledges of $35 or more do the same for the InfiniteLoop, and pledges of $75 or more are good for both. The project has met its funding goal, and production is expected to begin in August.

Who Phoned Home is now offering a TARDIS case for the iPhone 4. Inspired by the show Doctor Who, the case offers full access to all ports and controls, and is made on demand using rapid prototyping technology. It is available in blue, black, and gray, and sells for $40.

Loop Attachment has debuted its Loop Nano watchband for the sixth-generation iPod nano. Made from silicone, the Loop features a stainless steel buckle, a slot for the nano’s clip to ensure a secure fit, and open access to all ports and controls. The Loop Nano is available now in a variety of colors and sells for $20.

Spott provides a guide to famous movie locations

Spott, a new app by Inochi Ventures provides iOS users with an interactive guide to the locations of famous and iconic scenes from films and TV shows. Using a crowd-sourced database, the app allows users to browse and search for ‘Spotts’ by location, film, TV show or actor or simply see a list of Spotts near their current location on either a map or using the built-in augmented reality feature. Registered users can also contribute to the crowd-sourced database by submitting their own Spotts, adding photos at new or existing locations or suggesting updates and improvements to existing Spotts. Spott is a universal app and is available from the App Store for $3.

Extra Live launches official Tour de France Game

Extra Live has released an official game of the Tour de France 2011 for the iOS platform, allowing players to build a team and race virtually in the world’s biggest and oldest cycling event. Players must assemble, manage and train their own team of five cyclists and race against challenging AI opponents across 21 realistic stages of the Tour. Riders of varying styles such as rouleur, baroudeur, sprinter and climber are available with varying physical abilities allowing players to build their ideal team and players must employ real cycling strategy and cycling tactics to beat the AI opponents who will be using their own tactics to win.

Races travel through the real 21 stages of the Tour de France with true-to-life locations, vivid scenery and names and features from the climbs of Mont Ventoux to the flat laps of the Champs-Élysées. A unique Facebook integration feature allows players to ask for moral support from their friends—the game posts a message to the player’s Facebook wall and each “Like” received on the post will add energy points to give riders an instant boost in the game. Tour de France 2011 - The Official Game is available in two versions: Tour de France 2011 ($3) for the iPhone and iPod touch and Tour de France 2011 HD ($4) for the iPad.

Horizon Studios releases Postal Panic for iPad

Horizon Studios has released Postal Panic for the iPad, a postal code delivery game that challenges players to deliver parcels to the proper postal codes while racing against the clock. As parcels travel down the conveyor belt, players must drag them to the displayed postal code before they fall off the belt. Actual postal codes from the U.K. are used in the game with an accurate map of the U.K. postal code system provided, starting with London and eventually expanding throughout the country. Horizon Games is an independent developer comprised entirely of students from the Train2Game design and development course run by U.K. based DR Studios. Postal Panic is available from the App Store as a free download for the first three weeks, after which is will be priced at $1 with 50% of the revenue from the game going to the Prince’s Trust, a youth charity that helps to provide support and key workplace skills development to young people in the U.K.

App Store hits 100,000 iPad app milestone

Based on information available from the iPad’s App Store, there are now over 100,000 iPad-specific or Universal apps available. As of this writing, 100,146 apps are available, up from 90,000 at the time of Apple’s WWDC 2011 Keynote. As noted by Macstories, the milestone comes just 453 days after the launch of the first iPad, a rate of growth that is comparable to the App Store itself, which hit the 100,000 app mark in November 2009, slightly more than 15 months after its launch.

Nielsen: iPhone growth outpacing Android in U.S.

According to Nielsen’s May survey of mobile consumers in the U.S., the iPhone has shown a higher rate of growth than Android in recent months. Android continued to the be the most popular smartphone platform in the U.S., representing 38 percent of the overall market and 27 percent of recent purchases, while the iPhone represents 27 percent of the overall market and 17 percent of recent purchases. Notably, the iPhone’s percentage of recent purchases is up sharply from 10 percent in the February survey, while Android held a 27 percent share in both surveys. Overall, 55 percent of recent handset purchases were smartphones, up from 34 percent one year ago.

Flickpad adds Flickr Commons support + more

Shacked Software has released an update to Flickpad HD, its iPad photo-browsing app for Facebook and Flickr. The new version now includes direct support for The Commons, Flickr’s collection of public photography archives and adds a Flickpad Tour on initial startup to help familiarize new users with the application. Users can also now choose from five different backgrounds and easily toggle between showing Facebook or Flickr photos. Additional improvements include an integrated crash reporter, several UI enhancements and bug fixes and a new app icon. Flickpad HD requires an iPad running iOS 4.0 or later and is available from the App Store for $3.

Samsung files ITC complaint against Apple

Samsung has filed a complaint against Apple with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), the latest move in its ongoing legal battle with the Cupertino, CA-based iPhone-maker. The complaint covers “Mobile Electronic Devices, Including Wireless Communication Devices, Portable Music and Data Processing Devices, and Tablet Computer,” which FOSS Patents takes to mean that Samsung is seeking an import ban against the iPhone, iPad, and iPod. The ITC has yet to agree to investigate the complaint, but should they do so—an outcome the report suggests is “pretty certain”—a final decision would be reached within 16 to 18 months.

Apple to announce Q3 2011 Earnings on July 19

Apple has revealed that it will announce its third fiscal quarter results on July 19. As usual, the release will be followed by a conference call to discuss the financial results, which will begin at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. iLounge will be providing coverage of the call. Depending on the release date for OS X Lion, the call may serve as an announcement platform for first-week sales of the new operating system, and may also provide clues as to the launch schedules of iOS 5 and next-generation iPhones and iPods.

Cocobic releases Gold & Chocolate Lite

Cocobic has released a free, lite version of Gold & Chocolate for the iPhone and iPod touch. Designed to provide unique aesthetics, Gold & Chocolate puts the player in a strange and elegant world filled with peculiar creatures and plants and a unique and immersive soundtrack. Although all the creatures look alike, the player must identify hostile creatures revealed by the light of a comet which comes by periodically. Players must successfully identify the bad creatures and expel them to score points and advance within the game. Gold & Chocolate Lite is available from the App Store as a free download and includes 15 levels; the full version, Gold & Chocolate sells for $1 and provides a full 90 levels of game play.

PDP debuts Gotality fitness solution for iPhone, iPod touch

Performance Designed Products (PDP) has debuted its Gotality fitness solution for the iPhone and iPod touch. The Gotality solution includes a 30-pin connecting ear clip heart monitor, whihc is used to calculate fitness zones, calories burned, and ideal work out levels, a reflective armband compatible with all iPhone and iPod touch models, and a tape measure to track progress. The heart rate sensor works in conjunction with the company’s free app to monitor and keep track of health-related statistics. PDP’s Gotality fitness solution for the iPhone and iPod touch is available now and sells for $60.

PAN Vision releases Ionocraft Racing

Swedish mobile gaming studio PAN Vision has released a new steampunk-styled time-trial racing game for the iOS platform. The game, Ionocraft Racing challenges players to construct their own Ionocraft speeder and compete in challenges to earn medals and upgrade their racer. The game provides a unique steampunk graphic design with environments, tracks and racers that are a mix of industrial grime and Victorian class. As players advance in the game by winning races they are given the opportunity to upgrade their racer piece by piece, choosing specific parts and where to place them on the craft, affecting performance and allowing players to personalize their own design.  The game provides thirteen unique tracks, Retina Display support and Game Center integration for achievements and leaderboards. The game is available in two versions, Ionocraft Racing ($2) for the iPhone and iPod touch and Ionocraft Racing HD ($4) for the iPad.

iCade arcade cabinet for iPad now available

ThinkGeek has announced that its iCade gaming cabinet for the iPad and iPad 2 is now available. Initially announced as an April Fool’s Day joke in 2010, the iCade was built in partnership with ION Audio, and features a fully-functional gamepad with a retro-style arcade stick and buttons, a built-in cradle for the iPad, Bluetooth for connection to the device, and the ability to run off two AA batteries. Currently, the iCade is compatible with the free Atari’s Greatest Hits app, which offers access to 100 classic Atari titles; an API has also been released, allowing other third-party developers to add iCade compatibility to their titles. ThinkGeek’s iCade gaming cabinet for the iPad and iPad 2 is available now and sells for $100.

Apple unlocking all ‘no commitment’ AT&T iPhone 4 units?

Apple is now unlocking all AT&T iPhone 4 units purchased at the “no commitment” price, according to a new report. Citing an internal Apple sales training document, Mac Rumors reports that there are now two ways a customer can purchase an unlocked iPhone 4 at the Apple Store. The first is to purchase an unlocked iPhone without a micro-SIM card inside, while the second is to purchase any iPhone 4 with an AT&T micro-SIM inside “at full price.” “These models will also be unlocked whether the customer signs up for an AT&T service plan or chooses the Device Only purchase option,” reads the document. It also notes that “All devices sold at the unsubsidized prices of $649 and $749 will be unlocked and can be activated and used on supported GSM carrier networks.” Apple began selling unlocked iPhone 4 units in the U.S. for the first time earlier this month.

Go Tablet intros Nylon Travel Case for iPad, iPad 2

Go Tablet has introduced its Padded Ballistic Nylon Travel Case/Bag for the iPad and iPad 2.  This hybrid case/bag features a unique design that with a zippered front flap that folds back to allow for use of the iPad without the need for removal, a zippered pocket with other small items such as a charger, phone, and wallet, foam insulation for shock absorption and a smooth nylon interior for scratch protection, an included shoulder strap, and stainless steel hardware. Go Tablet’s Padded Ballistic Nylon Travel Case/Bag for the iPad and iPad 2 is available now in black or olive green and sells for $40.

Fring adds iPad support

Fring has released an update to its voice and video calling app for iOS devices adding native iPad support and the ability to use a Bluetooth headset on the iPhone. With this latest update, Fring is now a universal app providing the same voice and video calling features from the iPhone and iPod touch on the larger iPad screen, including instant messaging, voice-over-IP telephony and group video calling with up to three other Fring users. The new version also adds drag-and-drop navigation and a combined user interface on the iPad that provides simultaneous voice/video and text chat on the larger screen and introduces support for using a Bluetooth headset on the iPhone. Additional enhancements include connectivity improvements and several bug fixes. Fring is available from the App Store as a free download.

TomTom improves traffic coverage, adds multi-stop routes

TomTom has release an update to its iPhone and iPod touch navigation app adding an improved traffic service and support for multi-stop routes. TomTom 1.8 adds a new optional “TomTom HD Traffic” feature available as an in-app purchase that provides more accurate, real-time traffic information, updated every two minutes. The new version now allows users to create routes with up to five stops and includes an update to the latest maps. Version 1.8 also drops support for the original iPhone and first-generation iPod touch, noting that users of these devices should ensure that they do not delete the prior version from their device. TomTom is available from the App Store in versions for different areas: TomTom U.S. and Canada ($60), TomTom U.S.A. ($50) and TomTom Europe ($120) along with versions for several other areas. TomTom HD Traffic is available only in the U.S. via in-app purchase for an additional $20.

Carriers working on shared iPhone, iPad data plans

Both Verizon Wireless and AT&T in the U.S. are working on data plan offerings that would allow users to share their monthly data allotment between the iPhone and iPad. AllThingsD reports that AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega said in a interview at the D9 conference that “We’re working on one. It will be soon. I can’t comment on a quarter (when it will launch) but it will be soon,” while Verizon CFO Fran Shammo also recently indicated that the company is exploring such an offer. These moves follow launches of shared data plans France Telecom’s Orange unit in Austria, France, Spain, and the U.K., under which users pay an “extra couple of dollars” each month for each additional device that shares the same data allotment. In Austria, where such a plan has been offered the longest, Orange claims that 38 percent of all iPads on its network are now using the shared plans.
