Corkulous goes universal, adds iCloud support

Appigo has released a major update to Corkulous, its virtual idea board for iOS devices. Originally released as an iPad app. Corkulous allows users to collect, organize and share information visually on one or more virtual cork boards, including notes, labels, photos, contacts and tasks. The latest update adds iPhone and iPod touch support along with automatic and transparent syncing of cork boards via iCloud to keep them up to date across multiple iOS devices. Users can also save and store their cork boards in Dropbox to access from their other iOS devices and share with other users. Additional enhancements in the newest version include the ability to create titled notes with index cards, annotate boards with arrow flags that attach to the items they point to and various UI improvements. Corkulous is available from the App Store for $5.

XtremeMac unveils new cases for iPad 2

XtremeMac has unveiled its new Micro Folio, Thin Folio, and Zip Folio cases for the iPad 2. The Micro Folio is a one-piece folio-style case combining a structured, solid back with a microsuede-liked folding front that protects the screen when shut, doubles as a stand, and works with the iPad 2’s automatic sleep/wake feature. The Thin Folio is a one-piece folio case offering an integrated cover with support for the automatic sleep/wake feature, the ability to function as a multi-angle stand, access to all ports, controls, and cameras, and multiple interior card slots. Finally, the Zip Folio is a zippered briefcase-style folio case, offering an interior frame for the iPad 2 and organization pockets for papers, pens, and business cards. All three cases are available now in a variety of styles and colors and sell for $50 each.

Path expands to become a Smart Life Journal

Path has released a major update to its social photo sharing app for the iPhone and iPod touch expanding the app and online service beyond mere photo sharing into a Smart Journal for sharing various types of life moments. Initially released in November 2010, Path’s goal was to create a more personal social network for sharing photos online by deliberately limiting the number of friends that a user can have and thereby focusing on sharing personal moments with close friends and family. The app later expanded into limited video support and social network integration, but remained primarily about sharing and tagging photos.

Path 2.0 brings a completely new interface design and expands the sharing model to become a life journal rather than merely another photo sharing service. Users can now share more types of information in their “Path” such as music they’re listening to and places they visit and can even record automatic path entries when the app recognizes that the user is spending time in a different neighbourhood or visiting a new city. Additional features include the ability to record sleeping hours to a user’s Path along with moon phases, improved Push Notifications and integrated sharing with Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare from directly within the application. Path 2.0 requires an iPhone or fourth-generation iPod touch running iOS 4.2 or later and is available from the App Store as a free download.

NFB releases Advent Calendar for iPad

The National Film Board of Canada has released NFB Advent Calendar 2011, an interactive holiday season calendar for the iPad. The application provides users with a collection of NFB films for the holiday season including Oscar-winners, classics and new releases, with a new surprise movie unlocked each day between December 1st and Christmas Day along with additional content and surprises along the way. NFB Advent Calendar 2011 requires iOS 4.0 or later and is available from the App Store for $1.

id America intros Cushi Stripe skin for iPad 2

id America has introduced its new Cushi Stripe skin for the iPad 2. Made from EVA foam, Cushi Stripe is a raised, padded skin for the rear of the iPad 2 that offers a 3D-like striped design, an anti-residue adhesive for easy application and clean removal, compatibility with Apple’s iPad Smart Covers, cutouts for access to all ports, controls, and cameras, and an included screen protector, installation squeegee, and cleaning cloth. id America’s Cushi Stripe skin for the iPad 2 is expected to ship in early December and will sell for $25.

Samsung wins appeal to sell Galaxy Tab 10.1 in AU

Samsung has won its appeal in a case versus Apple lifting a ban on the sale of its Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia. Bloomberg reports that an Australian federal appeals judge ruled that sales of the iPad competitor can begin on December 2nd, after a three-member panel said unanimously that a lower-court judge made a mistake in grant Apple’s request for a ban. Apple will need to file an emergency appeal against the verdict in High Court to extend the sales ban; the High Court would need to decide before the end of business on Dec. 2nd whether to grant Apple’s request for an extension, after which Apple will have 28 days—starting today—to file a request to appeal the ruling.

Nielsen: iPhone accounts for 28% of US smartphone market

According to the latest data from Nielsen, the iPhone accounted for 28.3 percent of the U.S. smartphone market in Q3. While Android as a whole accounted for a larger percentage of handsets—42.8 percent—no single phone manufacturer accounted for more than Apple, with HTC coming closest with 20.3 percent. Overall, iPhone and Android combined to account for 83 percent of all app downloads during the period, despite accounting for just 71 percent of all smartphone hardware.

Apple sending mixed signals with recent app approvals?

Last night MacRumors reported that, a company developing tethering apps for mobile devices had released iTether, an official iPhone tethering app on the App Store. The iTether app allowed users, with the help of a companion Mac or PC desktop application, to tether their device over USB and use their iPhone’s 3G data connection. Tethering applications have traditionally not been allowed on the App Store, presumably due to agreements with cellular carriers and the duplication of Apple’s own Personal Hotspot functionality that was introduced in iOS 3.0. Therefore it was perhaps not surprising that iTether was removed from the App Store late this morning with no comment from either Apple or as to the reasons for its disappearance. In 2008, another developer, Nullriver Software had produced a SOCKS5 based tethering application for the iPhone and also found it similarly pulled from the App Store after only a few hours.

Notably, however, had indicated via Twitter that “We were very clear with Apple what our app did. They asked us a bunch of questions and then approved us.” iTether had no other features nor hidden functionality that would have obscured its true purpose, suggesting that Apple’s lower-level review process may be out of sync with overall company policy at this time. This marks the second time in less than a week that Apple has approved an app for sale with claims from the developers that the functionality of the app had been discussed with Apple prior to approval; last week Big Fish Games announced a novel released a subscription gaming app that was pulled by Apple only a few hours after the announcement, despite claims from the developer that Apple had in fact gone so far as to approve the developer’s press release.

iFixit offers Transparent Rear Panel for iPhone 4/4S

iFixit is now offering a Transparent Rear Panel kit for the GSM iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. The kit includes a Transparent Rear Glass Panel, a “Liberation Kit” with two screwdrivers—one for Apple’s pentalobe screws, and one for standard Phillips screws, along with two Phillips replacement screws—a screen protector, and a Thirsty Bag designed to absorb water from a device that’s been accidentally exposed to moisture. The Transparent Rear Panel Kit is available now in limited supplies for $30; once supplies are exhausted, iFixit will continue to offer the Panel by itself for the same price.

Code pointing to next-gen iOS devices found in iOS 5.1 beta

Code referencing next-generation versions of the iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV has been found in the iOS 5.1 beta released to developers last night. According to a report from 9to5Mac, iOS 5.1 contains references to an iPhone5,1—the iPhone 4S is listed as iPhone4,1—as well as an iPad 3,3, a full number higher than the iPad 2’s 2,x designation. A separate report indicates that iOS 5.1 also reveals the codename for the next-generation Apple TV, which is said to be J33. While such references do indicate that Apple is working on such hardware, they are not indicative of an impending—or even planned—release.

Apple seeds iOS 5.1 beta to developers

Apple has seeded its first beta version of iOS 5.1 to developers. According to the company, the update—listed as build 985117b—provides improved dictation support for text input views on “supported devices”. In addition, Apple warns that devices should be backed up either using iTunes or iCloud prior to installation, and that devices updated to iOS 5.1 beta will not be downgradable back to prior versions of the operating system. iOS 5.1 is available now to registered developers from the iOS Dev Center.

iPhone 4 emits smoke, red glow aboard plane

An iPhone 4 has spontaneously overheated aboard a commercial flight. According to a press release from Australian airline Regional Express, a passenger on flight ZL319 from Lismore to Sydney had his/her personal iPhone 4 emit “a significant amount of dense smoke, accompanied by a red glow” sometime after landing. In accordance with regulations, a flight attendant extinguished the handset, which was handed over to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau for analysis. A photo of the handset shows the rear glass to be shattered, with a burnt-looking area in the vicinity of the battery. Further details, such as if the handset was jailbroken or connected to a charger, are currently unknown; a somewhat dubious report from earlier this year indicated that a separate iPhone 4 unit had overheated and caught fire while in use. ColorWare debuts Wedge stand for iPad

ColorWare has debuted its new Wedge stand for the iPad, iPad 2, and other tablet devices. Machined from a single piece of billet aluminum, the Wedge offers support for portrait and orientations, as well as four slots offer 40, 60, 70, and 80 degree slopes for a variety of support angles, Ultrasuede lining in the slots to prevent scratching, cutouts for access to the Home button, and a non-slip rubber sole to prevent slipping. Like most ColorWare products, the Wedge is available in a wide variety of customizable color schemes, and sells for $200.

Yapta releases airfare price tracking iPhone app

Online airfare price tracking service Yapta has released an official iPhone application to allow travellers to more easily track and save on airfares while on the go. The Yapta app allows users to track airfare prices on specific flights from hundreds of different airlines around the world, alerting travellers when the price on a particular flight drops in general or falls below a specified price point. With the app, users can also track the price of airline tickets they have already purchased and receive alerts if the price drops below what was paid, notifying the user when they’re eligible for a travel credit from the airline. Users can receive alerts via iOS push notifications, e-mail messages or tweets when prices drop and the application can also be used to track rates and price drops on specific hotels. Yapta is available from the App Store as a free download.

Game Tongue Software releases Legendary Outlaw

Game Tongue Software has released Legendary Outlaw, a new FPS action-shooter for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. In Legendary Outlaw, players take on the role of Colt Kaufman, an outlaw willing to do anything necessary to achieve fame and fortune. The first-person shooter takes players through twelve detailed environments such as jailbreak and hiding out with bandits as the player mixes between running in with guns blazing and using stealth to assassinate enemies and carry out other objectives. Players can carry a weapon in each hand with dual-weapon support to increase firepower or choose the best tactical weapon for a situation as well as engage in melee and brawl fights with close-range weapons and bare hands. The game also features a complex AI system that challenges the player to use the surrounding environment to their advantage, proceeding by stealth when necessary to avoid obstacles and large groups of enemies in order to carry out the objective. Legendary Outlaw is a universal app compatible with any iOS device running iOS 3.1.3 or later with optimized graphics for the iPhone 4/4S and iPad 2 and is available from the App Store for $3.

CineXPlayer adds Dolby Digital Plus support

NXP Software has released an update to CineXPlayer, its Xvid video player for iOS devices, adding support for Dolby Digital Plus audio as well as Dropbox integration and AirPlay support. With CineXPlayer 2.5 users can now play back Xvid files with AC3 and eAC3 Dolby Digital streams with support of both 5.1 and 7.1 channels. The new version also allows users to download movie files from Dropbox or reimport them from the iOS Camera Roll and prevent movies from being included in iCloud backups. Additional new features include dual subtitle support for multiple languages, the ability to control subtitle offsets on-screen and support for displaying album covers. CineXPlayer for iPad is available from the App Store for $3; an iPhone version is also sold separately for $2.

WSJ: Sharp to supply LCD panels for next-gen iPad

Apple is adding Sharp as a supplier of LCD panels for the next-generation iPad, according to a new report. Citing people familiar with the situation, the Wall Street Journal reports that Sharp’s Kameyama No. 2 plant will manufacture panels for the device, which is expected to launch next year. In addition, Apple is said to be investing in facilities at Sharp’s panel making factories, although the size of the investment is unknown. Sharp already supplies panels for the iPhone, and will be supplying panels for the next-generation iPhone, which is also expected to launch next year, according to the report.

Brazilian iPhone 4 confirmed, photographed

Photos of a Brazilian-built 8GB iPhone 4 have appeared online, confirming a report that Apple was making handsets there. Citing an unnamed reader, MacMagazine (Translated Link) reports that Foxconn’s factory in Jundiai, São Paulo, Brazil has been making iPhones for over a month, and that the photos supplied by the reader depict one such unit. The white iPhone 4 in the photos appears to be identical to current units, save for a change in the regulatory text at the bottom rear. While it still says “Designed by Apple in California,” that is followed by “Industria Brasileira”—which translates to “Brazilian Industry”—instead of the usual “Assembled in China”. In addition, it carries the logo of ANATEL, Brazil’s telecommunications agency. It is currently unclear when customers might start to receive handsets built in Brazil, or to which markets such handsets might ship. [via Cult of Mac]

Apple airs new iPod touch 4G commercial

Apple has started to air a new commercial for the fourth-generation iPod touch. Entitled “Share the Fun,” the 30-second spot shows a number of middle- and high-school aged kids using the device to text each other over iMessage, video chat over FaceTime, play online multiplayer games using Game Center, update Twitter, listen to music, and record video, while the song “Tongue Tied” by Grouplove plays in the background. Notably, given the lack of new iPod touch hardware this year, the commercial emphasizes features added in iOS 5. The new ad is available for viewing now on YouTube or in embedded form below.
