WSJ: Real Networks to compete with Apple iTMS

Apple’s iTunes Music Store is to face competition from Real Networks, which will today announce a music download service for only 79 cents a track. According to the Wall Street Journal, the service will be based on the Rhapsody service from listen.com, which Real bought last month.

The move means Real won’t push Musicnet any more, a joint venture between it and major firms EMI, AOL and Bertelsmann. But the Journal points out that Real Networks owns 40 per cent of Musicnet and has already plunged an estimated $4 million into the service. Most people are waiting to see what Microsoft will do, as the race to sell music online gathers pace.

CNET: “Apple limits iTunes file sharing”

Ian Fried, staff writer for CNET News.com reports on the latest iTunes upgrade which limits sharing to local networks.

“‘The new iTunes 4.0.1 update limits Rendezvous music sharing to work only between computers on a local network (its intended use) and disables music sharing over the Internet,’ Apple said in a statement provided to CNET News.com.

‘Rendezvous music sharing…has been used by some in ways that have surprised and disappointed us,’ Apple said. ‘We designed it to allow friends and family to easily stream (not copy) their music between computers at home or in a small group setting, and it does this well.  But some people are taking advantage of it to stream music over the Internet to people they do not even know.’”

Burton AMP Jacket and New iPod Solution

  • May 22, 2003
  • iPod,

iLounger Travis Stratford submitted a news item detailing his frustration about the initial incompatibility of new iPods and the Burton Amp Jacket. For anyone with new iPod and Amp Jacket, there is a solution: the Amp Jacket Interface by Dr Bott.

A few weeks ago, I purchased the Burton AMP jacket from the Apple Store. I knew Apple would soon release new iPods, so I waited a few weeks before buying my iPod that would accompany the jacket. As soon as the new iPods were released, I purchased a 30 GB version at the NYC Apple Store (the first day they went on sale). That same night, I took the iPod home and “installed” it into my jacket. To my astonishment and horror, the new iPod did not work properly in my jacket (the ear-plug cord did not sit firmly in the new iPod and the jacket’s sleeve “controls” did not operate correctly.) ...

3Ring Reviews iTrip in Boston

Another review of the iTrip that hopefully clears up any questions about it.

“My final conclusion would be that the iTrip is a good product, given what it   has to do within FCC restrictions. However, be aware that sound quality will vary greatly on your area. This is out of the iTrip’s hands as it cannot really control or take over any frequencies… even though I was able to on what seemed to be a very weak frequency. All in all, I would say a good buy, although not an essential buy.”
