Musiconmac.com Launched; Daily Site for Mac Musicians

Musiconmac.com, a new website for Mac musicians, has been officially launched this week with daily news, product reviews, features, artist and developer interviews, tips, and tutorials. The site will focus on artists using the Mac as a creative tool for musicians, to compliment other resources on the web with exclusive content. Editor-in-Chief Peter Kirn is a New York-based composer and music technology educator/consultant. The site will be community-based with a full discussion board, reader submission of story ideas, and events calendars, publishing daily.

Think Different Store will sell iSkin eXo case

One million iPods, iTunes sells five million songs

Today at the WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference) in San Francisco, Steve Jobs took the stage to address the attendees and mentioned that the one millionth iPod would be shipped later today. Also noted, iTunes has sold over five million songs since its debut. Jobs is expected to announce the new Apple G5 Macintosh and show a preview of OS X 10.3 Panther. Update: Apple has posted a press release declaring the iTunes Music Store has sold over five million songs.

“‘The iTunes Music Store is changing the way people buy music,’ said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. ‘Selling five million songs in the first eight weeks has far surpassed our expectations, and clearly illustrates that many customers are hungry for a legal way to acquire their music online.’”

ackNOWLEDGE Announces iSkin eXo for new iPods

Pioneer Press: Apple iPod does a Palm

Julio Ojeda-Zapata of the Pioneer Press writes about using shareware to help you sync and manage contacts and addresses on your iPod for Windows.

“Apple doesn’t provide Windows-based data-synchronization software, only music-syncing features. But add-on programs from other sources are available for syncing an iPod with Outlook, Microsoft’s ubiquitous personal information manager.”

Mac: PodDB Reader 0.2b Released

The program is easy to use. On start-up it looks for a connected iPod and parses the iTunesDB file on your iPod. From the iTunesDB file it creates two files. In the ~/Music folder, you should see a iPodDB.html file and a iPodDB.xml file. The HTML file can be opened with a web browser and is just a listing of all the songs (location, size, bitrate, album, artist, title) on your iPod. The xml file can be used by iLyric. So open iLyric and change the default location for your “iTunes Music Library.xml” file to point to “iPodDB.xml.”

Pyrim Announces Holiday Special on i-Trac iPod Case

iPod radio ads posted on Apple UK website

Apple UK has posted two iPod radio ads on its website. “The ads, ‘7500 songs… is that a typo?!’ and ‘Jazz, Classical, Opera, Funk, Soul…’, feature the voice of Hollywood actor Jeff Goldblum, star of ‘Jurassic Park’ and Apple’s own television ads. The radio campaign will run until mid-July.”

Mac: “Rip To iPod” 1.0 Released

Doug’s AppleScripts for iTunes has posted Rip To iPod, a free AppleScript that rips each enabled (check-marked) CD track to iTunes and immediately copies it to iPod, deletes the file, and removes the track from the iTunes library, giving the appearance of seamless CD-to-iPod importing. You can also change your encoder on-the-fly and your Preferences-set encoder will be restored after the rip. Works in OS 9 and OS X.

BART Schedule for iPod 1.0 Released

For people who live in the San Francisco Bay Area (California) and ride BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), this is a program that lists all line schedules and stations for the iPod. It requires a Gen2 iPod with the Notes feature.

Dell no longer selling 10GB iPods

iLounger Alexis writes in an email to us: I had two orders placed on Dell’s site on 6/10 and 6/12 when they had the 10% and 15% off deals. They went through, but I never got shipping status emails and low and behold when I called Dell they told me they had lost the contract to sell them so both my orders had gotten cancelled.

Illegal Downloading Hurting Music Sales

At this years R&R Convention 2003, trade publication Radio & Records and Edison Media Research unveiled the results of a national survey of 12 to 44 year olds showing that the illegal downloading of music is hurting music sales. (Click ‘Read more’ for the complete press release.)

“Among the heaviest downloaders, those who have downloaded more than
100 music files (about 16% of 12-44s), reported purchases of CDs has dropped an incredible 61% from last year’s study (28.9 CDs, on average per person, purchased last year compared with 11.3 CDs purchased this year). [...]

71% of heavy downloaders say that “Instead of buying a CD they have burnt someone else’s copy of a CD,” and 48% of them say ‘They no longer have to buy CDs because they could download music for free over the Internet.’”

Apple Store: Refurbished 20GB iPod for $299

The Apple Store is selling refurbished iPod 20GB Windows for $299. The package includes headphones (new earbud-style), remote and carrying case, power adapter, FireWire cable, 4-6 pin FireWire adapter, manual, CD-ROM Disc w/MusicMatch and electronic documentation, and one-year warranty. Note: Apple lists the package contents incorrectly as if it were iPod for Mac (with iTunes).

Pre-order iTrip for new iPods

Griffin Technology is now accepting pre-orders for iTrip for new iPods, due to ship by July 21st.

“The iTrip comes in two ‘flavors’ - original and new. They both work exactly the same but one is for the original iPods with the FireWire connector on the top, the other is for the brand new iPod with the dock connector on the bottom.”
