iPad 2 announcement spurs host of parody videos

image

Last week’s unveiling of the iPad 2 has led to the release of a number of parody videos aimed at the new tablet. While most of the videos—including one from comedian Conan O’ Brien—attempt to poke fun at Apple’s iPad 2 promotional video, another from Norwegian YouTube user Exkild instead apes the device’s possible functionality by having a current-model iMac stand in for the tablet device. Four videos are embedded below; please note that some may contain objectionable content.

iPod silhouette guy dances at Apple Store

imageIn a performance that was recorded for posterity, an Apple retail store in Novi, Michigan last week featured a surprise three-minute appearance by one of the iPod silhouette dancers - or at least, someone dressed like one of them.

Patrons weren’t the only ones surprised to see the man in all-black attire get down to Jet’s song Are You Gonna Be My Girl? next to the store’s Genius Bar; following the performance, the store’s manager kicked out the performer’s friends, who lingered with a video camera after the impromptu dance routine had ended.

For details on the life imitates art imitates life performance, check out Cult of Mac, and don’t forget to watch the movie. Key moment: the silhouette drops his iPod a third of the way through, but doesn’t stop dancing.

iPod turning Japanese, inspiring knock-off tissue ads

piciLounge friend and reader Paul Nordstrom August writes from Tokyo, Japan’s Ginza district with this report on the increased Japanese cultural interest in the iPod: “I went by the Apple Store and at 8:00 or 9:00 pm on a Saturday it was packed out. The main floor is about 60 percent iPod. They had one Mac mini on a central stand - it looks fabulous with a 20-inch screen. No iPod shuffles on display, but each staff member had one around their neck… Anyway you may know they hand out tissue packs as adverts in Japan, and I was extremely amused to find this being handed out in Sapporo last week - fantastic!”

The iPod Vote

iPod Halloween costumes

iPod fan Jared Winick loves the portable music player so much that he created a fully functional iPod Halloween costume with working display and audio.

“I didn’t just want to be walking around in a box, so I made it a fully functional costume,” writes Winick. “I finally found a good use for a tablet PC, and used that for the display. A rewired USB mouse served as the ‘Forward,’ ‘Reverse,’ ‘Play/Pause’ buttons, and a bit of Java code played and displayed the MP3s. Some battery powered speakers provided the sound. It all worked out well, and I even won the costume contest.”

We’ve also come across a slightly better looking iPod costume (minus the audio capabilities) as well as a very original trio that dressed up as characters from Apple’s “Silhouette” iPod+iTunes TV and print ads.

The new iPod Ashlee Simpson Karaoke Edition

A reader has submitted a link to a website poking fun at Ashlee Simpson and the release of the U2 Special Edition iPod. Not very happy about the U2 iPods’ design the sites’ owner said, “it looks like the A-Team van,” and has retaliated with the iPod Ashlee Simpson Karaoke Edition.

“Never Miss A Beat. Like no other, iPod Ashlee Simpson Karaoke Edition stands out. Virgin white, it features the new Apple Fast-Forward Click Button and, on the flip side, complete how to use instructions. Available for just $349, it comes with enough money to use a pay phone for calling your daddy, your agent or both, when you get caught lip syncing live on national television. We have also included some Kleenex for those special times when your entire fan base realizes your nothing but a talentless hack.”

NYC man eats roaches for an iPod

“Pariente was fastest among three finalists at eating a baker’s dozen of oven-baked cockroaches — and he did it with his hands tied behind his back and without ketchup.

‘They were good,’ he said, cradling the box with the small computer inside. ‘Crunchy and salty. I would eat them again.’”

The Definition of the Man: His iPod

“The way a man wears his earbuds. The way he carries it in his pocket. The way he navigates the scroll wheel. These are the nuances that separate the punks from the stiffs. The dorks from the losers. The mere mortals from the god.”

iChicken video

My friend afallahi and I are both proud iPod owners and I happened upon this chicken one Easter (thanks Mom) and it just made sense to put one and one together. Apple’s “new” iPod and iTunes commercials are great and haven’t been parodied too much yet, so the opportunity was prime. We both hope you enjoy the show and please feel free to send the link to your friends.

In a surprise move Friday, Roxio declared that Apple’s iPod is Roxio’s “Gadget of the Year” for 2003. The declaration was seen as a stunning blow to Roxio’s Napster download service and Napster-branded mp3 player, which has served as one of the iPod’s primary competitors up until this point. In an exclusive interview with billpalmer.net, Roxio CEO Chris Gorog was candid in his company’s reasons for endorsing the iPod over its own product: “You gotta admit, the iPod is just better than our crap. I tried using a Napster mp3 player and after four days i gave it to my nephew and bought a 40 GB iPod…
