iPad mini poll ends, iTunes 11 poll begins

With over 3,300 votes from iLounge readers, our most recent poll—“Are you ordering an iPad mini?”—has ended. Readers were asked whether they had purchased or were planning to purchase an iPad mini, either as their first iPad device or in addition to or replacing another iPad device, or were not interested in the current iPad mini, due to plans to purchase a different iPad model, wait for the next model, or not purchase any iPad at all.

Only 35 percent of respondents indicated that they had ordered an iPad mini, with 18 percent purchasing one in addition to their current, full-size iPad, 9 percent purchasing one to replace an existing full-size iPad, and 8 percent buying the iPad mini as their first iPad device. The majority of respondents, however, expressed no interest in purchasing the current iPad mini, with over one-third stating that they were satisfied with their current full-size iPad, and 8 percent of readers indicating that they were planning to purchase a full-size iPad instead. Eleven percent of respondents noted that they are awaiting a future iPad mini model, seven percent indicated that they are happy with their iPhone or iPod touch, and three percent expressed no interest in owning any iOS devices at all.

iLounge releases the 2013 iPhone + iPod Buyer’s Guide

It’s back: the 2013 iPhone + iPod Buyers’ Guide is available for download today! Since 2004, iLounge’s famous Buyers’ Guides have given readers a comprehensive look at the growing worlds of Apple products, and our latest edition focuses on the pocket-sized iPod and iPhone families. The 2013 Guide features 208 pages of exhaustive information on the devices — including their histories — in addition to the best new accessories, apps, and games. Winners of our Editors’ Choice and Readers’ Choice Awards are also featured in the guide. Additional details follow the download links below.

New features in the new Guide include smart advice on the eight current iPhone and iPod models, an updated color comparison chart for every iPhone and iPod model, a look at the initial collection of Lightning accessories, and a new section on the best ways to repurpose your old iPhone or iPod.

There’s also an in-depth comparison between iPhone and iPod cameras, a comparison shopping feature offering assistance on where to buy the devices, top Bluetooth speaker recommendations, and the year’s best 100 games and apps for the iPhone and iPod. Also included are brief sections on the recently announced iPad mini and fourth-generation iPad, and what’s new in the world of Macs.

Our 2013 iPod/iPhone/iPad Buyers’ Guide is available in a computer- and iPad-friendly wide-screen version, a single-page version suitable for printing, and a small-screen version for viewing on the iPhone or iPod touch. We recommend that iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad users download the Guide to their computers, then drag and drop it into iTunes for reading in iBooks. Each version is completely free for iLounge readers, and distributed in PDF format for maximum compatibility across devices. Feel free to share the Guide by telling a friend, or hosting it on your file sharing network of choice. Enjoy!

iPod touch vs. iPad poll ends, iPad mini poll begins

With over 1,600 votes from iLounge readers, our most recent poll—“Which one of the following four products would you be most likely to purchase today for your own use?”—has ended. Readers were asked whether they would purchase a 3.5” fourth-generation iPod touch, a 4” fifth-generation iPod touch, a 7.85” smaller iPad or a 9.7” full-sized iPad, or whether they would purchase none at all, either because they already have an iPhone or simply aren’t interested in any iOS devices at all.

Over 80 percent of respondents indicated that they would purchase at least one of the devices, with about forty percent of readers opting for the 7.85” smaller iPad, 23 percent for the 9.7” full-sized iPad and 17 percent preferring the 4” fifth-generation iPod touch. Two percent of respondents indicated that they would still prefer the 3.5” fourth-generation iPod touch, even in light of these newer devices. 20 percent of readers expressed no interest at all in the iPod touch or iPad models, with most of these people already owning an iPhone.

With pre-orders for the new iPad mini beginning today, our new poll asks whether you are ordering one or not, and why. If you’re ordering an iPad mini or plan to, is this your first iPad device, a second iPad device, or is it replacing a full-sized iPad? If not, is it because you’re waiting for the next model, getting a full-sized iPad instead, already have another iOS device you’re happy with or are simply not interested in owning any iOS devices at all?  Our new poll—“Are you ordering an iPad mini?” lets you answer that question. As always, you can find the iLounge Poll in the left-hand column of the main iLounge.com homepage. Cast your vote today!

2012 Readers’ Choice Awards update, last chance to vote!

Voting is about to close for our 2012 Readers’ Choice awards, and it looks like we have three tight races to the end. The top four in each category haven’t changed much over the past week, but their respective standings have, and very few votes separate winners from runners-up. It’s nearly a dead heat in the Accessory Maker of the Year awards, as STM, Speck, Incipio, Griffin, and iHome are all vying for victory. For iOS App Developer of the Year, Apple, Google, Mundomono, and Facebook lead the way, and iOS Game Developer of the Year is down to Rovio, EA, Zynga, and Epic Games.

Don’t forget to vote for Apple Product of the Year, as well. The four-question survey can be completed in less than a minute. Voting ends at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time, Saturday, October 27. Cast your vote now, before it’s too late!

2012 Readers’ Choice Awards update, five days left!

We’ve already received thousands of votes for our 2012 Readers’ Choice Awards, and with only five days remaining to cast your ballot, we wanted to update you with the latest standings. Accessory Maker of the Year voting is extremely close, with STM, Speck, Griffin, and Incipio all fighting for the lead, and numerous other candidates are in the mix, as well. iOS App Developer of the Year still sees Apple, Facebook, Google, and Mundomono at the top of the large pile, and iOS Game Developer of the Year is a four-way battle between Rovio, EA, Zynga, and Epic Games.

As for Apple Product of the Year, the iPhone 5 is doing very well, but other nominees can’t be counted out yet. If your favorite product isn’t already listed, you can write in any announced Apple product released this year — in fact, all categories feature spots for write-in candidates. The four-question survey can be completed in less than a minute. Voting ends at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time, October 27. Cast your vote now!

2012 Readers’ Choice Awards standings; vote today!

Voting in our 2012 Readers’ Choice Awards is heating up. There’s been a major change in the Accessory Maker of the Year standings: STM has surged into competition with Speck, Griffin, and Incipio for the lead. iOS App Developer of the Year is a four-way race between Apple, Facebook, Google, and Mundomono, while iOS Game Developer of the Year is a race between Rovio, EA, Epic Games, and Zynga. Write-in candidates and plenty of other choices are vying for your votes, as well.

The races are very tight right now, and your vote will make a difference. Remember to vote for Apple Product of the Year, as well! The four-question survey can be completed in less than a minute. Voting ends at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time, October 27, so cast your vote today!

2012 Readers’ Choice Awards update, vote now!

Voting in our 2012 Readers’ Choice Awards has kicked off, and current votes in three of the four categories are very close indeed. For Accessory Maker of the Year, there’s a three-horse race between Speck Products, Incipio, and Griffin Technology. Application Developer of the Year is being hotly contested by Apple, Google, and Mundomono, while EA, Rovio, and Zynga are dominating early voting for Game Developer of the Year. There’s also some exciting voting going for Apple Product of the Year, and we want to see your votes!

Plenty of other nominees are still in the mix, as well, and based on past voting trends, every one of the categories is up for grabs. The four-question survey can be completed in less than a minute. Voting ends at 12:01 a.m. Eastern, October 27, so cast your vote today!

iPhone 5 poll ends, iPod touch vs. iPad poll begins

With over 4,700 votes from iLounge readers, our most recent poll—“What are you planning on doing with your current iPhone when the next-generation iPhone is released?”—has ended. Readers were asked to indicate whether they planned on selling or trading in their current iPhone, giving it to a friend or family member, keeping it in addition to purchasing the new model, keeping their current iPhone and not buying the next-generation model at all, purchasing the new iPhone as their first iPhone or neither already owning nor planning to buy the next-generation iPhone.

Over 70 percent of respondents indicated that they planned to purchase the new iPhone, with the majority split pretty evenly between either selling/trading in their current iPhone or giving it to a family member while 13 percent of readers indicated that they were planning on keeping their current iPhone in addition to purchasing the new model and 10 percent planning to purchase their first iPhone with the new model. Twenty percent of respondents expressed no interest in upgrading their current iPhone at all, and 8 percent indicated that they neither owned an iPhone currently nor had any intention of purchasing the new one.

Our new poll focuses on Apple’s other iOS devices: the iPod touch and iPad. Would you consider buying a new iPad or iPod touch today, and if so, which device would you be most interested in purchasing? The older fourth-generation iPod touch with a 3.5” screen, the new fifth-generation iPod touch with the 4” screen, the reportedly upcoming 7.85” iPad mini or a standard full-sized iPad with the 9.7” screen? Or do you simply have no interest in the iPad or iPod touch, either because you already own an iPhone, or Apple’s iOS devices just don’t appeal to you in general?  Our new poll—“Which one of the following four products would you be most likely to purchase today for your own use?” lets you answer that question. As always, you can find the iLounge Poll in the left-hand column of the main iLounge.com homepage. Cast your vote today!

7-inch tablet poll ends, next-gen iPhone poll begins

With over 1400 votes from iLounge readers, our most recent poll—“What should Apple do with the iPod touch given competition from $200 7” tablets?”—has ended. Readers given several options, including dropping the price and improving the chips inside, dropping the price, improving the chips and enlarging the screen, keep the same price, improve the chips, and radically increase the screen size to create a small iPad, discontinue it in favor of a $199 no-contract iPhone, or keep it the same for another year.

The majority of responses were split evenly between two options—creating a new, smaller iPad at the same price point, or dropping the price of the iPod touch slightly while improving the chips and enlarging the screen. Each option received 29 percent of the vote. 22 percent of readers suggested dropping the price and improving the chips on the inside, 15 percent supported discontinuing it altogether in favor of a $199 no-contract iPhone, and 5 percent said to keep it the same for another year—a somewhat surprising result, considering that the touch has essentially been left un-touched since the fourth-generation model debuted in 2010.
