iPod touch apps poll ends, Your iPod poll opens

With over 3,000 votes counted, our most recent poll—“Are iPod touch’s 5 new apps worth $20?”—is now closed. Though the results changed a little from day to day, the proportion of voters saying “yes” and “no” stayed close during the last two weeks, with 40% of responding readers voting yes, and 60% of readers saying no. Interestingly, users who actually own iPod touches were somewhat more likely to say “no” to the question, while “yes” responses were even between owners and non-owners. Thanks for your vote!

Today, we’re opening a new iLounge poll: “Which current model iPod do you personally use the most?” We’re interested in seeing whether you bought something in Apple’s late-2007 iPod and iPhone lineup, or whether you’re primarily using an older iPod model. Cast your vote now by looking for the orange-labelled iLounge Poll on the left hand side of the homepage!

iLounge debuts iDesign, a look at iPod & iPhone product design

Great design often appears inevitable. It’s not. Virtually every great product is the result of dozens of half-formed ideas, intentional choices, and plenty of prototypes. What better illustrations of this than the iPod and iPhone, products that had been done before by other companies, but were polished by Apple’s designers into museum-class works of art?

iPod fans have proved willing to pay a premium for great design, but over the last couple of years, things have changed: 9 out of every 10 iPod products is a boring clone of something that came before. It’s almost impossible to find real standouts with so much garbage to sift through.

So today, we’re launching iDesign, a series of feature articles that will begin by spotlighting the key design features of a strikingly unique product or family of products, initially without any involvement from the creators or vendors. We pick the items worthy of spotlighting fully on merit, with nothing else as a consideration; you’ll see each article at the same time as the designers do. Then, if possible, we’ll publish a second part to each article—an interview with the people behind the design. In this way, we hope to reward impressive products and designers, rather than focusing as much on the junk out there.

Our first subject: V-Moda’s Vibe earphones, which for the last year have used eye-grabbing metal shells to create some of the most fashionable listening devices available anywhere in the world. Click here for the inaugural edition of iDesign: the Art of V-Moda’s Vibe Earphones.

2008 Best of Show videos, photos now online

In addition to the list of winners, and new photographs, we’ve just finished posting videos of the 2008 Best of Show winners and finalists. Take quick peeks at the interfaces for the next generation of iPod on-TV docks, speakers, iPhone headphones, and much more: links to each of the videos are available in our 2008 Best of Show feature article here. YouTube glitches may require you to manually advance the play head once after the first few seconds. Enjoy!

2008 Best of Show Awards: Judging Underway

Having spent the past month and a half learning about upcoming iPod, iPhone, Apple TV and iTunes products, iLounge has started to pick the winners of our coveted 2008 Best of Show Awards. After a day full of company visits to scope out last-minute possibilities, five iLounge editors used our traditional “night before awards” dinner to discuss and debate the merits of hundreds of new products, whittling down the list to spotlight only the best of what’s out there.

Only three products emerged immediately as unanimous or near-unanimous winners. A number of others will be decided today. We’ll post the list, with pictures, as soon as possible—until then, check out our Flickr photo stream to see most of what’s coming. Stay tuned for the Award winners later today.

New Poll: Are 5 iPod touch apps worth $20?

After reading the many comments we have received since Apple’s announcement that it would sell a set of five iPod touch applications for $20, we wanted to poll our readership on an important question: are Apple’s Mail, Notes, Stocks, Weather, and Maps applications worth the asking price?

When answering the poll question, found on the left hand column of the main homepage, bear in mind that the price could have been less or zero, could have been more, and could have been split so that individual features were sold at different prices. Since this is the first time that Apple has tried to charge users for iPod programs—other than games—and the results of your purchases will likely influence the company’s future iPhone and iPod application sales plans, we’d really like to know what you think. Answer the poll today!

2008 Apple product poll ends, accessory poll begins

Our last poll, “Which likely 2008 Apple product are you most excited about?,” has closed. The results were interesting: with 3,957 votes taken, readers appeared to be more excited about more powerful touchscreen devices than anything else. A plurality (41%) voted for “a more powerful touchscreen iPod,” with 21% interested in a “3G iPhone” and 20% interested in a Mac tablet or sub-notebook. Only 11% registered interest in a less expensive, stripped-down iPhone, and a meager 6% were excited about a revamped Apple TV. Thanks for your votes!

Our new poll, “Which add-on do you most want right now?,” has just opened. Cast your vote now by clicking on the iLounge Poll link found on the site’s main page, left column. We’re anxious to see what interests you!

Best of Show 2008 Awards eligibility details

Next month, separate trade shows in Las Vegas (CES) and San Francisco (Macworld Expo) will serve as the unveiling grounds for the latest and greatest iPod and iPhone accessories, software, and services. As always, iLounge will be covering the announcements as they happen, and issuing our annual Best of Show Awards to the cream of the crop.

In order to help additional companies participate in our awards, we are publishing our eligibility guidelines—previously e-mailed to vendors on our subscription list—at the Additional Details and Comments link below. Our submission deadline is December 28, 2007, and our bright line rule is that “only newly announced products that are being demonstrated in working form at a booth at the 2008 CES and/or 2008 Macworld Expo are eligible for consideration. Products announced or released prior to CES are not eligible.” Read on for further details.

If you are a vendor and would like to be added to our mailing list, please send an email to this address and we’ll add you today. Thanks!

iPod Use Poll ends, 2008 Apple Poll begins

We’ve just closed out last month’s poll, “What do you use your iPod(s) for?,” and replaced it with a brand new poll, “Which likely 2008 Apple product are you most excited about?”

The results of the past poll were interesting. Of the nearly 3,000 survey responses we received, audio was obviously the number one use of the iPod—everyone uses their iPods for audio, and 25% used their iPods only for audio—but other uses were common, as well. Video was the second most popular use, with 61% of responding readers; photos were used by 56%, data storage by 46%, and games by 25%. Roughly a quarter, or 26% of responding readers used the iPod for audio, video, games, and photos, with 14% of all respondents using it for all four of those purposes and storing data, as well.

Cast your vote today in the 2008 Apple product survey! You can find it on the main page’s left hand column under iLounge Poll.
