EphPod also includes powerful music-information (“tag”) editing options, as well as support for Audible and MP4/AAC files (although not the “protected” MP4/AAC files sold at the iTunes Music Store). • Windows: GoogleGet 1.2.3 released

It disappeared for a while there, but now it’s back in action! GoogleGet is a small Windows program designed to download the latest news from news.google.com (or a local variation) to your iPod in the quickest and simplest way possible.

    GoogleGet

Google news has taken steps to prevent non-Google apps accessing and re-formatting their news, resulting in the very useful application GoogleGet becoming useless. Its writer has officially stopped the project.

“GoogleGet is no longer available for download and unfortunately none of the previous versions will work with the current Google News website.

The reason for this is pretty simple. During March 2004 Google made some changes to their servers that basically try to prevent non-browser software from downloading pages. I asked Google about this and they pointed me towards the terms of service that apply to that information, specifically part 3. This denies users the permission to reformat news information, or re-display it elsewhere. So, in respect of this I’ve decided to leave GooglGet behind.”

    Windows: XPlay 2 released

XPlay 2 provides a variety of new features, including compatibility with Audible files, AAC files, and even automatic WMA-to-MP3 conversion. XPlay 2 is also much faster than the original XPlay, has improved support for international characters, displays album art, supports play counts, and has a greatly-enhanced interface under Windows XP.

Windows: K-pod 0.95 (sync email to iPod) released

A Windows application that directly syncs your Inbox with your iPod (without the need for an e-mail client such as Outlook).

iPod plugin for Winamp 5 released

“With the release of the iPod Support Plug-in for Winamp 5 you can finally start using that PC formatted iPod for something other than a stylish paper weight.

Installing the plug-in will add an iPod device listing to your Winamp Media Library. Then all you have to do is connect your iPod to your PC, point Winamp to the drive letter that your iPod was assigned, and start sending your MP3 or M4A tracks from your PC to your hip little portable device. Winamp will also play tracks directly from your iPod so you can take your collection to a friends house and blast your tunes in style without ever having to touch his/her dirty dirty hard drive. You can even free up space of your own hard drive by deleting useless programs like iTunes and Music Match.

Will the overt sexiness of Nullsoft innovation ever end? No. No it won’t.”

    Mediafour releases XPlay 2.0 Beta

Starbrite Solutions has introduced the pPod for the Windows Pocket PC platform.  This MP3 player mimics the look and basic functionality of a 3G iPod… including a scroll wheel.  It even has a blue backlight!  I wonder how long it will take Apple to blow the whistle on this product.  Price tag is $35.

Red Chair Software refutes Musicmatch’s warning

In a response to Musicmatch’s recent warning about iTunes incompatibility, Red Chair Software, developers of Anapod Explorer, have posted a statement on its website which refutes Musicmatch’s suggestion that iTunes is sabotaging its software.

“The e-mail seems to imply that iTunes sabotages MusicMatch by “deleting critical files,” and some in the iPod community have speculated on whether Apple may be trying to hinder MusicMatch now that iTunes is available for Windows.

Based on our development work with our own iPod management software, Anapod Explorer, we do not believe that Apple intentionally tried to hinder third party software, nor does iTunes delete any “critical files” necessary to properly manage the iPod.”
