iLounge is proud to present the world’s first photo gallery of the new iPod shuffle, Apple’s $99 iPod (512MB). A limited quantity of iPod shuffle units were made available at Apple’s San Francisco retail store, and iLounge was on hand for the launch. Additional units are shipping from Apple’s factory in Asia today, and should be available nationally this week.

The 512MB unit includes 120 song storage capacity, a 12 hour rechargeable battery, and headphones. A 1GB unit will also be available at $149.

Ipodlounge has six iPod shuffles. We’re giving away three to our readers. Stay tuned for the giveaway details later today.

zip22 I don’t believe there is a student discount on the ipod shuffle, I checked the site to see if there is one, but it’s just the standard price.  I’m guessing since it’s only $100 and $150 that they see no need for a discount

while i would have liked the screen this IS the excersize iPod i always wanted. the iPod mini was STILL TO LARGE and was hard drive based so I didn’t want to run with it… this 512k version is perfect for my excersize needs, and my 20GB iPod for everything else. i couldn’t buy another flash MP3 player because A) they were ugly and B) no iTunes AAC store support. my ipod shuffle 512 is on the way. i am such a lemming…

Is anyone else with me in thinking the battery life still sucks? Yes it’s tiny, and only weighs 22g, but 12 hours?
No moving parts, no screen, not much else to speak of either? Surely they could have found some way to get it to at least 20?
Still want one though!

Seems to me that the contest yeilded better designs than this.  Even a small screen just showing the song name and volume level would have been nice.

Why is this better than any other flash-mp3 player?

Never mind- Just did some research. It’s insanely cheap. An Apple first.

“Why is this better than any other flash-mp3 player?”

3 reasons…

1) price for amount of included memory is as good or in many cases better than the competition. be sure they will drop their prices way down now though.

2) it plays iTunes music store AAC files, something no other flash player does.

3) it has the simplistic and elegant look of an iPod.

why is it bad…

1) clearly Apple is selling us a “feature” which really is a LACK of feature, ie. the lack of a screen. no other 1 gig player on the market is missing a screen, this is.

SO… is it bad?

no i don’t think so. many, many people wanted a truly lightweight and portable iPod for excersize that was shock proof and this is it… plus most people running etc. run shuffle or a playlist anyway. this is a nice “second” iPod and it is what i will be using it for.

PS: anyone who thought you would get a more full featured iPod for $99 was crazy because if they added a touch wheel and a screen EVEN WITH FAR LESS memory it would have butchered sales of the higher end units which mind you, are selling great even at their higher price today.

With this design think what they excluded

A screen
A backlight
The menus for the screen
clickwheel (or any touch sensitive controls)
dock connecter/ need for cables

This makes use quicker and a lot cheaper fot anyone purchasing it. It seems very well made and extremely simple. I like the fact its like a flashdrive and plugs right into the USB port (I thought of this idea back when the contest started). I think it’s another great ipod and a job well done by apple.

We’ll just have to see how it performs.
