Apple has contacted retail stores to prepare for an Oct. 9 launch of the new iPod touch and iPod nano, according to Japanese blog Macotakara. Japanese stores have been contacted about the launch first, Macotakara told iLounge, noting that there will apparently be few units in the initial shipment. There has been no official announcement from Apple as of yet, and the Apple Store still only lists the new iPod touch and nano as available to ship in October. Some readers have seen pre-order shipping status change to “preparing for shipment,” suggesting that these orders will be fulfilled shortly.

It’s good to know this finally. I’m not used to Apple being so vague about a product release and there have been several times I’ve thought “now would be a perfect time to have my nano.” Glad they’re doing is early in October rather than the end.

Saw this reported this AM on Touch Arcade and, sure enough, my order for the 5G touch is no longer able to be altered or canceled.
Of course, the lightning adapters are NOT being prepared to ship, grr…
Also like how they locked in everyone’s pre-orders mere days before announcements related to the iPad mini go out. Wouldn’t want to let anyone get cold feet

I wish Apple anounce smaller iPod mini like 5.5in to 6.5 inch than 7in display, its too big and not pocketable. But new ipod Nano are quite nice looking and iPod touch improved too.

@3: Yes, kind of off topic, but I would have rather seen them ditch the current style touch, skip the rumored dimensions of the iPad mini, and give us the Apple equivalent of the Galaxy Note Player. Something big enough to see/use more easily but small enough you can still put it in your pocket and mount it to your car dash.
I’m hoping they’ll surprise me with the actual iPad mini (although no hope of selling me one for at least another year due to locking me into the touch, just to keep this comment related to the story), but I suspect they’re going to give us a K-Fire sized device with a refurbished iPad price, i.e. jack of all trades, master of none.

As an addendum, the two 5G touches ordered have both shipped as of very late last night with an estimated arrival date of next Monday (the 15th).
While I appreciate the guarantee of getting them by next week at the latest, I’m going to be miffed if they really do start showing up in stores this week. The last time I gave them a chance with pre-ordering was 2008 and I wound up canceling the pre-order inside the Apple store (the online Apple store still didn’t even have an estimated ship by date) as I picked up what I wanted from the store stock.
