2GB and 4GB iPod shuffles coming?
DigiTimes reports that Apple plans to introduce 2GB and 4GB versions of the iPod shuffle as early as next month. The publication said that Samsung and Toshiba are “aggressively planning to ramp up their output of 8Gbit NAND flash chips, as Apple Computer plans to roll out 2GB and 4GB versions of its iPod Shuffle this June and August, respectively.” Apple currently offers 512MB and 1GB iPod shuffle models.

Hmm…
With 4GB Shuffles on the way, what will the mini be bumped to? Perhaps 20GB using new hitachi perpendicular hard drives?

They better add a screen if they’re gonna have that much capacity.

what the hell are they saying? 8gigabit chips are 1GB, correct? 2GB flash drives are like $200. so the 2GB shuffle would be more expensive than the mini? and i too think 2GB is a little much to go screenless. this is all BS.

actually, i looked some more, and 2gb drives can be had for around $140, but that still puts the price at or around mini territory. they’re analysis doesnt even make sense.

Digitimes is the least reliable source for rumors, only believe it if Think Secret says it. And then think twice.

well the 1gb already holds more music than the battery can last for, so the battery would have to increase, too. and that many songs without a screen to navigate is going to be a pain. maybe they’ll have screens and be $199 and $249, so people will choose them over minis soley on size. that’s if this is true though; it probably isn’t.

I don’t really see 4 gig Shuffles appearing unless the Mini’s capacity is significantly raised. First, Apple would then have 2 fairly similar products and would risk losing sales on the more expensive unit in favour of the cheaper one. Second, 4 gigs of flash is far more expensive than the 4/6 gig microdrives that are used in the Mini. Third, the Mini has a screen.
