Apple’s new ‘Echo rival’ may feature a camera

Apple may be planning to include facial recognition technology in its rumored Siri device, according to CNET. Sources for the report indicated that Apple has “explored putting a camera in its device” with facial recognition technology that could detect who is in a room, and could then activate personal music and lighting profiles.

A report from The Information earlier this week revealed that Apple has had plans for a Siri-capable hardware device that would rival Amazon’s Echo since sometime last year. However, although The Information’s report originally suggested that the device would take the form of a speaker — like similar voice assistant devices from Amazon and Google — a separate report from VentureBeat challenged that notion. That report claimed that while Apple had considered a standalone speaker, the company had chosen to build that functionality into a future Apple TV device instead.
