If your battery’s dead, what’s the worst that can happen…that you won’t be able to use it anymore?

Sorry to come in on this late.  I’ve just noticed that my 30GB’s battery is only lasting about two hours.  Is replacing it on my own the way to go?  How do I tell if I have a 3rd generation IPOD - or whatever else I need to know?
