Harman Kardon readying iPod auto adapter

Harman Kardon is reportedly planning to release a new car iPod adapter that will feature a back-lit display and separate controller.
“Both will be mountable anywhere in the vehicle, and are united in audio goodness by the small ‘brain’ that’s the central hub for all the physical cable connections as well as a charger for the iPod,” reports Engadget. “Connection to the car’s audio system can be of the direct line-in variety if you opt to have the unit professionally installed for an extra $70 fee; otherwise you can set up the $199 adapter kit yourself and use the built-in FM radio transmitter to pump the audio signal to your can stereo.”

I purchased my auto ipod adapter/system for the sole reason that I didn’t have to use the ipod or external controller to operate it. The beauty was that I could use my radios native controls w/o fiddling with yet another device.
$199.00 to use an fm transmitter?? LOL! Get an iTrip (or equivalent) and use the frerakin’ ipod to control it!

I would like to see, read, and learn more, so I will wait for a review of the actual product. Harmon Kardon is no slouch in the quality department, and I do like the idea of not having my iPod in the sun’s UV rays. This looks to be a comprehensive package, so I am interested.

I agree with ash8080. What does this accomplish that a line out cable and a well placed iPod does not? Are they seriously expecting iPod owners to pay $199 for a plastic nob and a screen that is the same size as the iPod’s LCD display?
