4G iPod has secret features?

Time Magazine’s Wilson Rothman named the new 4G iPod the “Gadget of the Week” and noted that “you should know that internally the new iPod is a ground-up reconstruction, and its really compelling applications — the ones that very well might get the goat of anyone unable or unwilling to upgrade — are still secret. All that Apple is saying is that there’s more to this than what’s being publicized.”

notice everyone, that apple dropped the case, dock, remote accesories from the 20gb, and everything but the dock for the 40. perhaps that rumor about the tv-out dock is for real, and that’s why apple didn’t include them with the 20.
Here’s my take- if you tap the iPod word on the back of the new 4g iPods, the chrome side pops out, turns 180’ vertically, and reveals a color screen- for viewing photos and qt videos.
maybe if you jam a knife up the dock port, it’ll turn into apple’s revolutionary new product, the iRobot. It does anything you want it to do!
yeah, well, i’m serious about the first part

“I suspect that the ‘‘ground up reconstruction” was to improve efficiency and subsequently battery life. Not to incorporate hidden features.”

I agree. And to make production cheaper too, probably.

Sure, new software features may one day be added, it happens… but I don’t expect anything big, and CERTAINLY not major hidden hardware like wireless.

Ahhh… Luke, they dropped the accessories to drop the price $100

There are rumours that the 4G LCD is colour! However, Apple please update all iPods with the latest OS (hardware/added-value differences aside)! I don’t want to keep switching to Disk Mode every time my 3G iPod fails to mount on the desktop!

The company that makes the hardware for the iPod ‘Portal Player’ has this to say about their newest hardware…

In the past four years, PortalPlayer has evolved its technology           to support the next generation of devices—Personal Media Players.          The latest architecture includes significantly improved power management           and internal bus performance enhancements.  New controllers           include USB 2.0 Device, Host and On-The-Go (OTG) support, FireWire,          and S/P-DIF as well as on-chip ATA/66 IDE controllers and dedicated           DMA engines for up to four hard disk drives.  Display support           is included for YUV out to an external TV encoder, color TFT VGA           graphics controller, 4-bit grayscale controller or bridge interface           to smart panels.

Note the ability for YUV out to external TV encoder. I’m willing to bet the new jack in the iPod 4G is an A/V jack with video capability so you can rip your iMovies to MPEG-4 files and play them on any TV with RCA input.

nothinglower… how true…
i’m getting mine on sunday, and this thread here’s got me going. I find the rumor about the color screen hilarious. That would be the most funny thing in the world. Apple releases a product making it look so similar to the previous generation. Then they release a software update a month into it, which suddenly transforms each pixel on the lcd into 4 color pixels. haha. That would transform apple into some kind of marketing legend.
awaiting what becomes of this…

also [double post] there is no new jack on the iPod, is there Michael?

What about being able to plug an iSight into the iPod and use it to record Digital Video?  I think that this is more along the lines of where they will be taking the iPod.  Wonder if the Drive is fast enough to capture iSight quality Video?  Cell Phones take Pictures, why shouldn’t the iPod take movies….

dude, what ever the new features are, they most likely aren’t going to be anything we can just take the iPod apart and see. Its software features or its something to do with the new things griffin is hinting about.

Hey, check this out…in the contrast test in diagnostic mode there’s a blue screen….no kidding, check it out!  If the screen can be blue, it means at a minimum blue fonts…maybe red & yellow there too but not part of the test yet?!

Uh…it’s definitely a color screen.  at least 3 shades of blue….NOT grayscale, bright blue.  Kickin!!!

How bout that the box pic http://gallery.ipodlounge.com/ipod/displayimage.php?album=13&pos=48

makes it pretty obvious that this is the first one to come in a color box….i smell a hint!

I just snapped a pic of the screen, it’s a little blurry b/c i had to disable the flash to eliminate the glare.  I’ll figure out somewhere to post it soon.

Yeah, I’m thinking iPhoto hotsync like iTunes that let you bring photos with you…most likely app i can come up with.

whatever the features are, they’re not going to be half as good as what we are expecting…

You people nead to get ‘edumicated” about the $g iPod. It IS a ground up reconstruction and uses a totally new chipset. THIS IS WHY THERE WERE NO 3G SOFTWARE UPDATES. Look at the cnet review of then new ipod at reviews.cnet.com in th portable audio section. It has all this info and morer.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t Apple own a majority stake in PortalPlayer?
