ABC launches Million Hit Lowdown on iTunes Store
To get TV fans ready for the new season of shows, ABC is offering one million free downloads of last season’s finales of Lost, Grey’s Anatomoy, and Desperate Housewives on the iTunes Store. ABC’s “Million Hit Lowdown” is also offering unlimited downloads of “special highlight shows” for each of the three series, featuring commentary from show producers and editors at People Magazine and Entertainment Weekly. I think this is a great idea from the standpoint of the networks. You build hype for the new season and probably rope in a few more fans in the process. I’ll be interested, however, to see what kind of free giveaways come out of the iTunes Movie Store. It seems that they could probably giveaway Behind-the-Scenes videos, interviews with actors/directors, and other items typically found on the DVD of a film. Of course, that brings up the idea that perhaps they could bundle a lot of those “DVD extras” with the movie download, sort of as a movie “album”. With the new iTV and larger video format, that would largly render DVDs obsolete for my purposes.

FYI, you have to upgrade to iTunes 7.0 to download these freebies. Otherwise you can’t even put them in your shopping cart.

Well, Germany ain’t so lucky. It looks like access is granted to only those accounts that were registered with the help of an US credit card.
