Following iLounge’s exclusive report earlier this week, Altec Lansing has now officially announced its inMotion iM7 portable speaker system for the iPod and iPod mini. The company said that it will be available this month at Apple Stores and from its online store for $249.95.
“The iM7 is the newest and highest-performing member of Altec Lansing’s groundbreaking portable inMotion speaker family,” company says in its press release. “This sleek, cylindrical, white and silver ‘mobile home’ for your iPod packs more drivers and power into its boombox-sized chassis than any competitive product, including two 1” tweeters, two 3” mid-range drivers, a 4” side-firing subwoofer and a 4” passive radiator. These components combine with Altec Lansing’s new high-efficiency digital amplification technology and proven XdB onboard digital signal processor to deliver big bass, clearly distinguished mids and highs, and room-filling sound from every track.”

I like the look of this new inMotion setup a lot, but comon…$249? The sound quality had better be pretty good. Can’t wait until ipodlounge gets their hands on one for review.

$249 really isn’t that bad as long as it sounds better than the horrid iM series (iMmini / iMplus).

6-2-05 I just ordered one for my husband for father’s day. Yikes! It better be good! I reviewed the other portables and the “cons” were pretty bad. I hope it is worth it - my man loves his ipod. I will post a review. Looks like 4 - 6 weeks just to ship!

C/NET already has done a quick review on the product; they claim it sounds fabulous (you can take that for what it’s worth; it IS C/NET, after all).

Well, if C/NET is correct then it seems that A/L has finally done one right. And portable, to boot.

I was in the Apple store today prepared to drop the 299 for the Bose system or JBL speakers. The helpful sales associate said we just got these in. I was really blown away by the IM7 sound. We placed it next to the Bose system and cranked both. The IM7 really got the attention. It is portable, but with 8 D sized batteries I don’t plan on lugging around much. Really worth the 250. Altec Lansing really hit a homerun with this one.
