Analyst: iPod nano sales skewed towards 4GB black model
American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu has provided further details on iPod nano sales, noting that black models are greatly outselling white models. “Our checks continue to indicate good iPod nano sales, albeit not great,” Wu said in a research noted obtained by iLounge. “Black nanos are selling well, while white nanos continue to lag. We are hearing that Apple grossly underestimated demand for the $249 black 4GB iPod nano and is realigning its supply chain to meet this demand dynamic.”
Wu said customers would look to other nano models if the 4GB black model was unavailable, and said he still believes the nano will need a capacity increase or price cut. “In the meantime, we believe some customers looking for a black 4GB iPod nano end up buying a black 2GB nano or white 4 GB nano as a compromise,” he said. “We continue to believe that iPod nano may need a storage upgrade and/or price cut to spur sales beyond black 4GB iPod nanos.”

Damn skippy! I work at a college computer store, and we have over 20 pre-orders for the Black 4GB, as opposed to 5 for the White one.
The 2GB models have sold modestly, too.

White hides fingerprints but the white and pastel fetish has gone on long enough. I still can’t believe black was exclusive to the 20GB U2 model for so long.
If the memory were user upgradeable that might help people compromise with a 2GB, knowing they could eventually make it a 4, 6, 8 or 10?! GB. I’m happy I was fortunate enough to find and exchange a 4GB black scratched under the acrylic (in manufacturing) for another 4GB black.

I’m getting as much interest in my black nano as I used to get in my 2G iPod back in the day. It’s not _just_ that it’s a nano, it’s that it’s black. In fact, one guy who fondled my nano yesterday didn’t even know if _came_ in black since all he’s seen is the TV and print ads.

Ok, I fess up…it was my fault…when I went out and bought my 4GB black nano I skewed this whole over-analytic research kit and kaboodle thang.
I’m dreadfully sorry, and I apologize to all marketing analysts throughout Wall Street, Main Street, Mercy Street, wherever, who are now coming up with whatever dirt they can imagine to throw on the nano because they prematurely sized their mouths with one or both their feet.
Idiots…ever think that perhaps Apple may have adjusted (or will do so in the future if not already) their production numbers to take into account a higher demand for the black color? Do you truly BELIEVE that black plastic is REALLY that rare a commodity? LOL.

The supply issue on the 4 gig model (black or white) is very real here in the UK.
Nowhere online (even the Apple Store) has ever had any in stock since launch. I popped into two branches on Dixons (a high street retailer) today, to discover both had 3(!) 4 gig nano’s delivered today which sold within hours.
I sincerely hope this is nothing to do with the fact that they are being held back for volume nEUtering, as I’ve yet to see anyone claim they can reverse this in software.

After to searching to no avail for an in stock 4G Nano, I’ve back-ordered a Black 4G from Crutchfield. I would have bought either a white or black 4G if I could have found either in stock anywhere. 4G Nano’s are scarce regardless of color; if I have to wait I’ll go for the black.

All the BestBuys around me have a pile of 2GB white. I would guess in the 3 stores I went to there were over 100 and not one other type. I think Apple would have been smart to just come out with the 2GB black and white and worked on the supply of 4GB and then introduce them in late Nov. The would make a killing that way.

I think it would be great if there was some sort of price cut… I was looking to replace my mini until I saw the price for the 4GB. And actually, I sort of fancied the white.
