“The analysts speculate that if half the 100 million tracks available through the Apple/iTunes promotion are redeemed, “it will increase iTunes downloads over 100 percent”. This will also increase Apple’s market share in comparison to rival vendors.
The report looks at the true strategy behind the store—increasing iPod sales. As most competing players utilize an incompatible file format, IDC says: “Apple stands to develop a built-in market for the iPod”. It agrees that if users use and choose iTunes then they will be more likely to buy Apple’s music player in preference to competing products.
The conclusion? “Apple stands to benefit greatly form this promotion and carry its momentum forward”.”

Now now, we all know from the wisdom of anonymous ‘net rants that Apple is dead! All because of allowing Pepsi to do a promotion with iTunes. :D Also, the RIAA is Apple’s fault, Apple should have refused to get into music, forcing the RIAA to disband in terror. Plus, music buyers really want Microsoft controlling their rights, and Steve Jobs personally used a cattle prod to make those kids appear in a Superbowl ad for Pepsi against their will.

Does anyone know what the Pepsi/iTunes promotion has done to QuickTime’s market share on Windows systems? Remember, you have to download QuickTime for Windows to play iTunes on a PC. I am a Mac QuickTime developer and was hoping more Windows users would be downloading QuickTime during this promotion, but I have yet to see any solid market share numbers.
