Following up on our Backstage report from yesterday, Apple is now shipping fourth-generation iPod orders placed online through the Apple Store. Shipments are coming from Shanghai, China, and at least some orders appear to have missed the cutoff time for delivery tomorrow.
After canvassing roughly a dozen bricks-and-mortar Apple retail stores in major cities around the country, all but one report that retail locations have not yet received the new iPods for sale. East Coast stores tended to indicate that they are expected in the next 24-48 hours, while Midwestern and West Coast stores have been less committal, stating that they will be available by week’s end.
A representative at one Apple retail store in Westchester, NY indicated that he believed that the store had received and sold out of its initial shipment, however, the representative said that he had not been at the store when it happened. Please feel free to use the comments thread of this news story to report your experiences in ordering, locating, and/or receiving the new iPod.

I know it doesn’t help the issue, but I’m still amazed that we even consider overnight from Shanghai. Wasn’t so long ago that the best we could get was a week. My how things have changed.

I ordered mine yesterday at about 10am Central time and just took the free shipping. Does that mean that Apple will take longer to process my order or will it go out with the faster shipment types? Is there any hope I’ll get it before next week?

Compusa, Norfolk, VA Apple rep (actually employeed by Apple not compusa) says they will be in store on Friday.
I ordered mine yesterday 6:27am PST, paid for overnight shipping, and as of 10 minutes ago the status is still open, NOT shipped. Shipped my 3rd gen 40g off to the highest bidder yesterday, I’m ready for my new 40g.

I called best buy today in houston and they said they had them, but I am not sure if the guy was confused with the old ones, It is hard to say the difference especially when they have the same hard drive sizes so I will have to go soon to see if he knows what he is talking about or not

Do you guys think it’s really worth it to upgrade? I already have 40 GB iPod. Do I really need another 40 GB iPod with more battery life for $100.00 less. I think the new iPods are fine for 1st time buyers but I don’t feel it’s really necessary to upgrade for existing users. Feel free to disagree.

The BestBuy stores will not have them in stock for almost two weeks in stores. BestBuy.com will start selling them this Thursday or early Friday. This comes from a reputable source and unless you have a relative high enough working at BestBuy corp. and can make that person change the schedule, this is as solid as it gets.
It seems that most of the Apple stores will be receiving their first shipment 7/21/04. I have called 6 of them and that was the answer from all 6. But I am sure they are not certain on that issue.

I agree with Tchocky. The new iPods are fine for people who haven’t had an iPod before (or as an upgrade from a 2nd gen or 1st gen) but it’s for most of us it’s not worth it getting the new one.

Just checked Apple Store Short Pump (posting on new Cinema Displays, ooohhh) and they have none, but they are LOADED with 15, 20, and 40 gigs!!!! Their whole genius bar and sales counter is full of them. The sales counter has them stacked 4 high, all the way across!

The iPod isn’t meant to make 3Gs obsolete. 3Gs are still great. I’d wait for 5 or 6G if I had a 3G… or just keep the 3G forever!
But the new iPod isn’t a flop just because it doesn’t obsolete the old model. It’s a great evolution, and tempting to me as a non-iPod owner. Especially if Minis are hard to get.

Tchocky, don’t give me permission to disagree with you, OK?
4G iPods are good for those who don’t have one already or people who haven’t upgraded since 1 or 2G, BUT it is also for peple who really like the 3G iPod but really want more battery life.
It’s a portable music player and i can’t really call it say 3G iPods are good for people who aren’t at access to a outlet every eight hours.
So i say the 4G iPods are really worth it if your someone like me who would like to have thier enitre music collection at hand for extended periods of time with less recharging.
