Apple: 4G iPods shipping online, perhaps at retail

Following up on our Backstage report from yesterday, Apple is now shipping fourth-generation iPod orders placed online through the Apple Store. Shipments are coming from Shanghai, China, and at least some orders appear to have missed the cutoff time for delivery tomorrow.

After canvassing roughly a dozen bricks-and-mortar Apple retail stores in major cities around the country, all but one report that retail locations have not yet received the new iPods for sale. East Coast stores tended to indicate that they are expected in the next 24-48 hours, while Midwestern and West Coast stores have been less committal, stating that they will be available by week’s end.

A representative at one Apple retail store in Westchester, NY indicated that he believed that the store had received and sold out of its initial shipment, however, the representative said that he had not been at the store when it happened. Please feel free to use the comments thread of this news story to report your experiences in ordering, locating, and/or receiving the new iPod.

Went to the Phoenix Apple Store this a.m. and got a 20 gig. I asked them how many they got and they said quite a few of both the 20’s and 40’s.

As a side note, they didn’t get any mini’s…still sold out.

Called the Marlton, NJ Apple Store at 10AM on Monday. Was told “don’t have ‘em, don’t know when we’re getting them”.

Ordered a 40GB from my favorite Apple VAR. Will give Original 1st gen 5GB iPod to wife (who has recently taken a new job with a 1 hour commute).

Stopped by Marlton, NJ Apple Store on Tuesday around 5PM. Was told, “we’ll have them tomorrow”.

Was on the other side of Philadelphia today. Stopped at the King of Prussia Apple Store. Relatively large stack of both 20GB and 40GB models selling like hotcakes.

Decide to get wife a new 40GB and give Original to 11-yr old cousin. Purchase 40GB iPod, AppleCare, InCase Folio, PocketDock…

Woo hoo!

Of course, I’m taking this one and my wife will have to wait a few days for the one from the VAR…heh.

I ordered a 3rdGen 20G iPod just before 4thGen showed up. Apple upgraded me to the 4thGen 40G + free remote + free carrying-case . w00t! Kwel!

:D

Now, I have been receiving the auxiliary parts, one box a day. This morning, iPod showed as shipped, from Shanghai!!!!!

Anyway, it says it has left FedEx Ramp (going to the airplane?). But then, Apple just sent me an email saying “too much delay. you can cancel your order if you want” (or something similar.)

I don’t want to cancel. I want my iPod!

E.T.A. is Monday. Can’t wait. I have all the accesories here (remote, travel kit, carrying case, car adapter) but no iPod. Arghhhhhhhhhh

Scoo-iPod-doooooo! where are you!
