Apple announces countdown to 100 million songs
As the number of songs downloaded from Apple’s iTunes Music Store crosses 95 million tomorrow, Apple will begin the countdown to 100 million songs by giving away 50 special 20GB iPods—one to the purchaser of each 100,000th song downloaded between 95 million and 100 million songs. In addition, the person who downloads the 100 millionth song will receive a 17-inch PowerBook, a 40GB iPod, a gift certificate for 10,000 iTunes songs to create the ultimate music library for their iPod and the opportunity to create their own Celebrity Playlist to be published on the iTunes Music Store. All iTunes Music Store customers in the US, UK, France and Germany are eligible. Songs sold so far as of this posting: 94,540,731.

The Apple counter is going up every few minutes, so people haven’t stopped buying
They must realize the chances of winning are so small they need not worry about it.

This doesn’t make sense to me. Any other business that gives away prizes to it’s n-th customer, doesn’t post how many customers they’ve had so far. If you do, people like myself, won’t buy anything until other people get the counter close. I think there will be slow business until the counter gets close to a 100,000 mark, and then people’ll buy a lot, and then stop again and wait. Maybe it’ll all even out in the end, but I doubt it.

well ... couldnt they make the counter fake? we could all be waiting for no reason. I mean cmon the counters at 893,733 then for 5 min nothing happens then all of a sudden BAM 900 mil? wtf.

^900 mil, wtf? Apple is counting up to 100 million…but I agree that it would be nice if the counter refreshed more often. ARRGH.
