Apple today announced major updates to the iPod family at its “The Beat Goes On” special event in San Francisco. The iPod shuffle saw a refresh with new colors and packaging, an all-new iPod nano was introduced, as well as the iPod classic (which replaces the original “iPod” in the company’s lineup), and the all-new iPod touch.

imageiPod shuffle: The new iPod shuffle is available in several new colors, including a (PRODUCT) RED model, light green, light blue, and light purple. The smallest iPod also received updated, smaller packaging, while storage capacity remains at 1GB for the same price of $79. It will be available soon.

imageiPod nano: The all-new iPod nano is the same product shown in earlier spy shots, with a 2-inch, 204 pixel per inch, 320x240 resolution screen for video and photo viewing. The all-new design is made from anodized aluminum and polished stainless steel, and is available in five colors: silver, black, blue, green, and a (PRODUCT) RED special edition. It offers 24 hours of audio playback or five hours of video playback on a single charge, and includes three bundled games: Vortex, iQuiz, and Klondike. The new iPod nano also receives an enhanced iPod interface with Cover Flow. It will be available in two storage capacities — a silver-only 4GB model for $149, and an 8GB model available in all five colors for $199. “We’ve taken the most popular music player in the world and added stunning video playback just in time for the holiday season,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “The iPod nano just keeps getting better and better with each new generation.” It is available immediately.

imageiPod classic: Replacing the fifth-generation iPod in the company’s lineup, Apple’s new iPod classic features a new, thinner, all-metal anodized aluminum and polished stainless steel enclosure, the same enhanced iPod interface as the new iPod nano, including Cover Flow, and increased capacity and battery life. “The first iPod put 1,000 songs in your pocket-this new iPod classic can put 40,000 songs in your pocket,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “With a thinner, all-metal enclosure and an enhanced user interface, the iPod classic is ideal for people who want to hold everything on their iPod.”

In addition, the iPod classic also comes bundled with three games: Vortex, iQuiz, and Klondike. The new 80GB iPod classic is thinner than the fifth-generation 30GB model, and offers 30 hours of music playback and five hours of video playback. It sells for $249. The 160GB iPod classic offers storage for up to 40,000 songs, up to 40 hours of music playback and seven hours of video playback from a single charge, and sells for $349. Both models are available immediately, in both silver and black.

imageiPod touch: Building on the momentum of the iPhone’s iPod interface, the iPod touch features the same touch screen multi-touch interface found on the iPhone, as well as integrated Wi-Fi, the Safari web browser, a 3.5-inch widescreen display, and a 8mm thin enclosure. The iPod touch offers up to 22 hours of audio playback, up to five hours of video playback, and will be available in both 8GB and 16GB capacities later this month. The 8GB iPod touch is priced at $299, while the 16GB model will sell for $399.

iPhone: Apple also dropped the price of the 8GB iPhone to $399. “The surveys are in and iPhone customer satisfaction scores are higher than we’ve ever seen for any Apple product,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We’ve clearly got a breakthrough product and we want to make it affordable for even more customers as we enter this holiday season.” Apple’s official announcement states that “The iPhone 4GB model will be sold while supplies last,” but does not give any pricing details. Update: Several iLounge readers have reported that Apple is offering the 4GB iPhone model for $299 “While supplies last.”

TERRIBLY Dissappointed in the capacities of the iPod Touch. Looks like I won’t be getting a new iPod after all.

Does anyone know if the screen is made of Glass or Plastic ?

Thanks in advance.

“Of course iPod touch is going to increase in capacity… but when? I waited and waited for this type of announcement, finally breaking down and buying the 5.5 80GB iPod (classic) last September. Now I’m dying to get my hands on an iPod touch. (If ever there was a reason to have two iPods, this would be it.)”

Ditto.
I got a discounted 30GB iPod Photo when the 4G iPod and iPod Photo lines merged in July 2005.  Then the 5G iPod was released 2 months later.  I drooled at the thought of a phoneless iPhone when the iPhone announcement was made nearly a year ago.  Now I’m really disappointed.  I would gladly sacrifice the more reliable, lighter, and thinner flash-based storage for higher capacity.  I’ll probably just get an 80GB or 160GB iPod classic till the iPod Touch is updated to have a similar capacity.  Right now I have 38GB of music, 8GB of podcasts (includes video podcasts), and 5.5 GB of videos.  Plus I was planning on ripping some of my DVDs.  Ugh.

Oh yeah… and those are awfully “spring"ish colors to come out in the fall.

OK all you smucks line up to get a 16G Touch for $399 that will be out of date in 4 months to be superseded by a 64G or bigger for $350 I am underwhelmed!!!

if that was the case, then everyone SHOULD wait untill the next gen of ipods, as apple are always goign to improve on their products, or at least intend to.

but for now this gives quite a good range to different types of consumers. The Wipod, that will be more suited for a business need, as its more of an internet capable device with an ipod tacked on. the real ipod is the one with the 160gb storage me and a lot of other people have been gagging for for so long.

Keep it in perspective guys.

I spoke with a friend at another well known electronics company and he told me it makes sense that the iPod Touch is flash based.  Wi-Fi, large screen, AND an HD with moving parts is a lot to ask out of a battery.  So something had to be sacrificed.

On top of that, iPods are just as much fashion statements.  A lot of people want something sleek, not bulky.  An HD based touch would need a larger casing for both the HD and the battery to make it work to most people’s expectations.  If you wanted an internet device that had space, get a laptop.

I know, it’s debatable how many would want a wi-fi device in an iPod.  Okay take that out, what about other portable media players already with high capacities?  And put aside the “It’s not an iPod” argument, are they low maintenance?

Besides, flash capacities will eventually get higher, and prices come down.  If you don’t want one now, then hold and wait.  Maybe something else will eventually come along.

From a warranty and troubleshooting standpoint, something with moving parts like that could be trouble.  HDs in portable entertainment devices are risky and flash is considered safer in the long term, and that’s where the development will be in the future for these things.

Okay I admit I would have liked a Touch with at least 30gb, but I am quite happy with my first ed iPod “Classic” 5G, and 12inch iBook.  I don’t think I’ll need too much else for a good year.

P.S. To iPhone users, I bought my iPod just before the 5.5 last year with improved battery and search.  That’s part of being a consumer.

yes glass or plastic screen… also the back being stainless steel… doesn’t that mean it’ll scratch whereas the iphone back is brushed alluminum that doesn’t scratch???

I’m impressed with the business side of these announcements.

iPod Touch/iPhone - Slash the price of the lower capacity (and slower selling) iPhone and get it out of the way. After those are gone, there are three choices: 8Gb and no phone for $299, 8Gb and phone for $399 or trade out the phone and double capacity to 16GB for $399. This way, Apple essentially has eliminated cannibalism of iPhone sales.

iPod classic - If you crave high capacity, you can have 80Gb instead of 8Gb or 160Gb instead of 16Gb for $50 less. You won’t get touchscreen, but we’ll enhance the GUI for you a bit and throw in some games.

iPod nano - OK, so don’t need touchscreen, phone or large volume of storage. $150 for 4Gb, $200 for 8Gb. You get video and games, too. (BTW, they don’t look THAT bad, given the price, the size and the capabilities.)

iPod shuffle - Tell you what, we’ll eliminate the video and screen, and give you 1Gb for $80. We’ll throw in a clip for free.

Bottom line: there’s something for every level of demand and price level. They’re smart to hold back a the high-capacity iPhone/iPod touch—if you want the interface and the capacity bad enough, you’ll just have to buy two. Also, most average people are willing to sacrifice the higher-end functions for price. At $150 for 4Gb, that “fuggly” nano will still sell like hotcakes.

iTouch @ only 8 or 16GB??? Pass.

160GB Classic for $399 sounds reasonable but I’m afraid of battery life and muscle fatigue from scrolling when the iPod is full!

Does anyone know if the touch’s wi-fi can be disabled for airline travel?

The touch is my pick so far… bigger screen and it can be used as portable web browser… Hopefully, the will add icons as time goes on. I’m not sure why they didn’t add the iphone google maps icon.

Like others here I think the iPod Touch is beautiful, has some great features. WiFi, browsing… all very cool. But unfortunately not nearly enough storage. I’m lazy, I want all my music with me at all times so I can just plug in.... maintenance free. Now if Touch had a 60GB or 80GB version, my wallet would be wide open. Until then I’ll stick with my current iPod.

Hey-

The Razr was 600 for a second, and about half as reliable(I have a friend that owns a cell repair shop and quotes the Razr as the worst best-selling phone ever).  All of this stuf is cool, and it’s only gonna get cooler.  Come On! You can put you CD collection in your pocket! YOUR CD COLLECTION IN YOU POCKET!  This stuff is awesome, and all you iPhoners out there thanks for shellin out, cause we don’t get a 400 dollar iPhone if the thing sucks.  We’re a bunch of spoiled weenies.  10 years ago the internet was a joke and CD players still cost more than 50 bucks.  Enjoy the future, cause it’s here.  Somebody will make flying car and you’ll complain about that.  I love all this stuff, it’s awesome.

I just heard the news…
Yes, I figuere I did get it up the wazzoo with the iPhone price drop. But those are the breaks. It hurts but I atleast was able to say “been there done that”.
As far as the new iPods. This is the first time I wasnt eager to sell my 5gen iPod to upgrade to the new one. I dont need the iTouch because it wouldnt be able to carry my whole video and music collection. So my iPhone is good enough for that. I could get the ipod classic but there is nothing special about it except the size (I still have 4 gigs of space on my old one) the weight, and the colors (which I am not crazy for).

For the first time I am satisfied with what I own now. Thanks apple? I think.

WHAT???

It is way too soon to drop the iPhone price by that much!  I understand the phasing out of the 4gig model, but making the 8gig model $100 less than what the 4gig was going for???  There goes the coolness premium that I had, now everyone and their mother will think about getting one.  I know that’s the point, but I remember when I had to wait a year and a half before I abandoned my cell phone for a RAZR because that’s when they went from $399 to around $199 (of course, they are now going for $49 to free).

That irks me!

Other than that, my sister will be happy to see a 160gig iPod, iPod Touch doesn’t interest me (I’ll wait for version 2.0 of iPhone to come out, but this time wait 68 days before I run out to buy it as it may go down $200!!!!), and the new color schemes are very bleah!  The first colors (bright pastels) and the second colors (bold) were great, but these ones are just muted boringness with no pizazz.  Good thing I don’t really need a shuffle or nano.

You would think as a thank you to early iphone adopters, Steve would at least throw us a bone and let us have a free movie download or a couple of free songs.

I dont feel screwed for buying an iphone early, I love it, but I certainly dont feel happy the price dropped so dramatically so soon after its debut.

Posted by unreal on September 5, 2007 at 2:58 PM (PDT)

You people have to be crazy to not, think they’d lower the price. Early adopters = purchase at any price. Like I posted in July, they’ll lower the price $200 within 2 months. ANd they just did. There hasn’t been ONE SINGLE cellphone in existance, that didn’t have its price lowered at some point. Why should the Iphone be any different?

WIth that said, I’ll be picking up my after work for $299 grin

Now, sales for the Iphone are REALLY going to explode....

I’m keeping my 8GB 2G black nano and pretending the new one doesn’t exist (too chunky). The 2G is perfect for music.

But...I’m getting a Touch, since buying an iPhone is a waste of money for people abroad, and it has what I need:

-Wifi access
-MP3 player
-Video player with big screen

Now, why don’t we have the Google Maps option on the Touch? We should get some more apps on that thing.

On one side we have people, like me, who rushed out to get the iPhone and now feel screwed over. Then on the other side we have the people who didn’t get the iPhone who are laughing it off by saying “Hey, the price was going to go down eventually, too bad.” Yeah, we knew that would happen but not two months afterwards. Maybe six months later like the PS3 and even that was probably because of bad sales. Given the fact that the iPod touch was in development this year and knowing how much they wanted to price it, Apple should have priced the iPhone as it is now since day one. It was sneaky and can’t simply be chalked up as “product cycle pricing”. Bottom line, that would have been the right thing to do.

I am not surprised to see Win2000 support dropped with iTunes 7.4. I have dropped it from my company’s supported OSes as well, is it simply too difficult to maintain and is now a very old system with very few users. Many of the things we need to do in Windows are simply not supported on Win2000.

We have one last Windows box at my house, still wheezing on Win2000. Soon we will be 100% OS X.
